The aim of this study was to assess the content of anthocyanins in the juice and the physical and chemical characteristics of the fruit of eight blood orange varieties and of orange Valencia, and also verify the effects of storage of fruits at 10ºC, for a period of up to 60 days, in the same parameters. The anthocyanin content was determined using a spectrofotometric method and ten physical and chemical characteristics of the fruits and juice were also evaluated before and during the storage. Under natural conditions all varieties showed fruits with low anthocyanin content in the juice. Cold storage during a period of up to 60 days enables a significant accumulation of anthocyanin in the juice, but in a different level in the evaluated blood orange varieties. Moro is the variety that showed the highest anthocyanin content in the end of the storage period. Except for two Sanguinelli varieties (Morocco and Polidari), the other varieties can be considered as similar as others and suitable for consumption. The storage of fruits to 10ºC during the maximum period of 60 days significantly modifies only fruit width, juice content in fruits, soluble solids content and acidity of the juice

In the last years many populations of anurans have declined and extinctions have been recorded. They were related to environmental pollution, changes of land use and emerging diseases. The main objective of this study was to determine copper sensitivity of the anuran of the Amazon Rhinella granulosa and Scinax ruber tadpoles at stage 25 and Scinax ruber eggs exposed for 96 h to copper concentrations ranging from 15 µg Cu L-1 to 94 µg Cu L-1. LC50 at 96 h of Rhinella granulosa Gosner 25, Scinax ruber Gosner 25 and Scinax ruber eggs in black water of the Amazon were 23.48, 36.37 and 50.02 µg Cu L-1, respectively. The Biotic Ligand Model was used to predict the LC50 values for these species and it can be considered a promising tool for these tropical species and water conditions. Copper toxicity depends on water physical-chemical composition and on the larval stage of the tadpoles. The Gosner stage 19-21 (related to the appearance of external gills) is the most vulnerable and the egg stage is the most resistant. In case of contamination by copper, the natural streams must have special attention, since copper is more bioavailable.

Seroprevalence of Kaposi Sarcoma–associated Herpesvirus and Other Serologic Markers in the Brazilian Amazon

To determine the presence of Kaposi sarcoma–associated herpesvirus (KSHV) and other serologic markers, we tested serum specimens of 339 Amerindians, 181 rural non-Amerindians, and 1,133 urban blood donors (13 Amerindians) in the Brazilian Amazon. High KSHV seroprevalence in children and inverse association with herpes simplex virus type 2 indicates predominant nonsexual transmission among Amerindians

Morphology of Gambierdiscus excentricus (Dinophyceae) with emphasis on sulcal plates

Gambierdiscus excentricus is an epibenthic dinoflagellate able to produce ciguatoxin and maitotoxin-like compounds that are responsible for ciguatera fish poisoning. Morphological descriptions and molecular characterization of two G. excentricus strains isolated from Brazil and maintained in culture were provided. The most complete description of the morphology of the sulcal region of Gambierdiscus based on light and scanning electron microscopy was presented. The sulcal area morphology and nomenclature used by different authors to name the sulcal plates in Gambierdiscus were reviewed. Two small sulcal plates (S.m.a. and S.m.p.) were shown for the first time. Phylogenetic trees based on D1–D3 and D8–D10 large subunits of ribosomal RNA gene sequences showed that the strains of G. excentricus from Brazil clustered with strains of G. excentricus isolated from its type locality, the Canary Islands. Both phylogenetic trees reconstructed the same relationships among all the formally described Gambierdiscus species and Gambierdiscus sp. ribotype 2 and Gambierdiscus sp. type 2.Versión del editor2,080

Mode-locked lasers are of interest for applications such as biological imaging, non-linear frequency conversion, and single-photon generation. In the infrared, chip-integrated mode-locked lasers have been demonstrated through integration of laser diodes with low-loss photonic circuits. However additional challenges, such as a higher propagation loss and smaller alignment tolerances have prevented the realization of such lasers in the visible range. Here, we demonstrate the first chip-integrated mode-locked diode laser in the visible using an integrated photonic circuit for cavity extension. Based on a gallium arsenide gain chip and a low-loss silicon nitride feedback circuit, the laser is passively mode-locked using a saturable absorber implemented by focused ion beam milling. At a center wavelength of 642 nm, the laser shows an average output power of 3.4 mW, with a spectral bandwidth of 1.5 nm at a repetition rate of 7.84 GHz

Plant vibration of american pepper cultivars for fruit production in protected environment with and without closed sides

The aim of this research was to evaluate plant vibration for fruit and seed production of american pepper in greenhouse with open and closed sides. The experiment was carried out at Fazenda Experimental da Unesp/FCA located in the municipality of São Manuel-SP. Six treatments were carried out, in a split plot design, two plots with plant vibration or without plant vibration and three subplots with cultivars ('Dirce', 'Dínamo' and 'Doce Comprida'). Plants were vibrated by shaking the wire where the stake was fixed, manually, for about 5 seconds, twice a day. Randomized block design with three replications were used. The same experiment was performed in two environments: with and without closed sides with screen. The traits evaluated were: mass of fruit and total and marketable number of fruits (no visible defects) per plant; percentage of marketable fruit; mass, diameter and length of the fruit; mass and number of seeds per fruit; and plant height. The fruit production was higher in the environment with sides closed, with 24 marketable fruits per plant whereas in the open environment, 7 marketable fruits. American pepper plant vibration did not affect production, length, diameter and average mass of the fruits. Exceptionally for the cultivar 'Doce Comprida', a higher seed production per fruit was obtained in open environment in the absence of plant vibration, in comparison to close environment, with average of 259 and 126 seeds per fruit, respectively. American pepper plant vibration did not affect production, length, diameter and average mass of marketable fruit
