    Nitrous oxide emissions from the Arabian Sea: A synthesis

    We computed high-resolution (1º latitude x 1º longitude) seasonal and annual nitrous oxide (N2O) concentration fields for the Arabian Sea surface layer using a database containing more than 2400 values measured between December 1977 and July 1997. N2O concentrations are highest during the southwest (SW) monsoon along the southern Indian continental shelf. Annual emissions range from 0.33 to 0.70 Tg N2O and are dominated by fluxes from coastal regions during the SW and northeast monsoons. Our revised estimate for the annual N2O flux from the Arabian Sea is much more tightly constrained than the previous consensus derived using averaged in-situ data from a smaller number of studies. However, the tendency to focus on measurements in locally restricted features in combination with insufficient seasonal data coverage leads to considerable uncertainties of the concentration fields and thus in the flux estimates, especially in the coastal zones of the northern and eastern Arabian Sea. The overall mean relative error of the annual N2O emissions from the Arabian Sea was estimated to be at least 65%

    Evaluation of quality assurance instruments in higher education institutions: A case of Oman

    The use of a variety of instruments for quality assurance, management, and enhancement in higher education is well recognized. This article investigated the instruClose Panelments used by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Oman to measure, control, and manage the quality of their services in alignment with the standards set by Oman Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA). Quality Assurance Managers (QAMs) from five HEIs were interviewed to identify the instruments used by them to fulfil the requirements of each standard and the way they make use of the data gathered by using these instruments. Findings from the study reveal that questionnaires and meetings are the most common instruments used by these institutions to measure, control and assure the efficacy of their current quality activities. In addition, HEIs use summary statistics to analyse data and then present them in meetings or through reports. On the other hand, it was found that substantial efforts are made to collect data but the efficient usage of data is missing. The QAMs reported a lack of awareness among the staff on the importance of collecting data since the staff members believe that these data are collected for documentation purposes only. This study emphasizes the importance of using the data gathered from different instruments in decision making and enhancing the quality of HEIs

    Study of the histidine complex of uranium(IV): synthesis, spectrophotometric, magnetic and electrochemical properties

    We synthesized the novel histidine complex of uranium(IV). A 1:3 mole ratio was found between metal and ligand by the mole ratio method, while –NH2 and –COO– groups of histidine behave as coordinating sites. The IR spectra confirmed the lone pair donating or coordinating sites. The elemental analysis confirmed the stoichiometry. The bathochromic shift with an increase in the optical density in the UV-Visible range indicated that the compound and its central metal ion hold uniform electronic charge distribution. The electrochemical results indicated a quasi-reversible (neither completely reversible nor completely irreversible) oxidation of the complex to its uranium(V) product at the platinum working electrode. The quasi-reversible process shows a comparatively slow electron transfer (ET) rate with the heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant ‘ks’ (3.4 ×  10–4 cm s-1) at 50 mV s-1 and 305 ± 0.5 K. The kinetics such as diffusion and charge transfer lead the reaction with an ECE (electrochemical–chemical–electrochemical) mechanism. The thermodynamic parameters of activation such as ΔH*; 4.257 kJ mol–1, ΔS*; -2.519 × 10–3 J mol–1 K–1 and ΔG* 4.26 kJ mol–1 helped to propose an associative mechanism of the electron transfer at the platinum working electrode.                     KEY WORDS: Uranium, Histidine, Spectroscopy, Electrochemistry, Kinetics   Bull.     Starting from the superconformal algebras associated with G2G_2 manifolds, I extend the algebra to the manifolds with spin(7) holonomy. I show how the mirror symmetry in manifolds with spin(7) holonomy arises as the automorphism in the extended sperconformal algebra. The automorphism is realized as 14 kinds of T-dualities on the supersymmetric T4T^4 toroidal fibrations.     Novel technique for constraining r-process (n,γ\gamma) reaction rates

    A novel technique has been developed, which will open exciting new opportunities for studying the very neutron-rich nuclei involved in the r-process. As a proof-of-principle, the γ\gamma-spectra from the β\beta-decay of 76^{76}Ga have been measured with the SuN detector at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The nuclear level density and γ\gamma-ray strength function are extracted and used as input to Hauser-Feshbach calculations. The present technique is shown to strongly constrain the 75^{75}Ge(n,γn,\gamma)76^{76}Ge cross section and reaction rate.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Fluctuations in productivity and denitrification in the Southeastern Arabian Sea during the Late Quaternary

    Sedimentological and stable isotopic characteristics of sediments have been studied in a core from the southeastern Arabian Sea containing records of the past 70 ka. Palaeoproductivity proxies such as organic carbon (Corg), total nitrogen (TN) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) contents, show high values at the core top and during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and marine isotope stage (MIS) 4, suggesting high productivity, whereas low Corg and CaCO3 contents are associated with the MIS ½ and mid-MIS 3, indicating reduced productivity. The δ18O values in planktonic foraminifera range between - 2.7% and - 0.1%, with a large glacial-interglacial amplitude Δδ18O of ∼2.6%, suggesting changes related to monsoonal precipitation/ runoff. The δ15N values fluctuate between 5.4% and 7.3%, signifying variation in denitrification intensity. The δ15N indicates an overall increase in denitrification intensity during MIS 1 and MIS 3 and, reduced intensity during MIS ½, LGM and mid-MIS 3. Higher primary productivity and reduced denitrification intensity during LGM and MIS 4 might be due to convective winter mixing and more oxygenated subsurface waters. Reduced primary productivity during MIS ½ and mid-MIS 3 might be the effect of enhanced precipitation associated with the intensified southwest monsoon fortifying near-surface stratification

    COVID-19 pandemic impact on psychotropic prescribing for adults with intellectual disability: an observational study in English specialist community services.

    BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a disproportionate impact on people with intellectual disability (PwID). PwID are at higher risk of mental illness and receive psychotropic prescribing 'off licence' also, to manage distress behaviour. The lockdown and reduction of multidisciplinary face-to-face appointments had an impact on care delivery, the recourse possibly being psychotropic prescribing. It is imperative to comprehend the influence the pandemic had on psychotropic prescribing patterns to enable future planning. AIMS: The aim was to understand the impact of the pandemic by comparing psychotropic prescribing patterns during the England lockdown with the prescribing patterns before lockdown in specialist urban and rural psychiatric services for PwID. METHOD: Data was collected from Cornwall (rural) and London (urban) intellectual disability services in England as a service evaluation project to rationalise psychotropic prescribing. PwID in both services open across January 2020 to January 2021 were included. Baseline patient demographics including age, gender, ethnicity, intellectual disability level and neurodevelopmental and psychological comorbidities were collected. Baseline psychotropic prescribing and subsequent % change for each psychotropic group for the two services was compared using Pearson's chi-square and z-statistic (two tailed) with significance taken at P < 0.05. RESULTS: The two centres London (n = 113) and Cornwall (n = 97) were largely comparable but for baseline differences in terms of presence of severe mental illness (37 v. 86, P < 0.001), challenging behaviour (44 v. 57, P < 0.05) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (37 v. 3, P < 0.001). There was an overall increase in psychotropic prescribing during lockdown in urban as compared with rural settings (11% v. 2%). CONCLUSIONS: The pandemic caused an increase in psychotropic prescribing associated with lockdown severity and urban settings. Team structures could have played a role
