Women and the Precarity of War: Reading Women Militants and Activists in Sharmila Seyyid’s Ummath

Ummath, written by Sharmila Seyyid, navigates the sensitive topic of the precarious lives of three separate women amid the chaos of war-torn Sri Lanka. The stories of main characters Yoga and Theivanai demonstrate women’s challenges in and out of militancy. Their struggles led them to Thawakkul, a Muslim social worker devoted to the cause of rehabilitating disabled and widowed women who once served the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam). Ummath provides a powerful social critique of the conditions that aggravated the separatist conflict, the stigmatization of women who become part of the LTTE, the inexorable violence perpetrated by all sides in a chaotic and prolonged internal conflict, and the failure of rehabilitating the militants into the community. The present article investigates the precarity faced by women in the anarchic context of civil violence and internal conflicts. The article discusses the disruption of education, militancy experience, the social stigma of being an ex-militant, and the challenges faced by reformers working to build peace in post-war society. The study employs Judith Butler’s theory on precarity to investigate the social life of women militants and activists in the separatist war. Butler’s concept of precarity addresses how people’s vulnerability is politically induced, and hence different groups of people are exposed in different degrees to violence and death. In Butler’s work, she argues that those who are not considered living in the first place, or whose lives are precarious and are not ascribed great value, are not mourned when they pass away. This article analyzes the problems that women militants and social workers face as well as the social ostracization they encounter daily through the focal points of Yoga, Theivanai, and Thawakkul’s lives as narrated in Ummath. The exploration of the microcosmic experiences of the three women’s lives highlights the need to study women’s issues in the unstable context of a social uprising and the vulnerabilities they are exposed to in the context of human rights

Existing work has used the cross layer approach to optimize a wireless network in terms of packet scheduling, error correction, multimedia quality, power consumption, selection of modulation/coding and user experience, etc. We explore the use of new cross layer opportunities to achieve secrecy and e ciency of data transmission in wireless networks. In the rst part of this dissertation, we build secret key establishment methods for private communication between wireless devices using the spatio-temporal variations of symmetric-wireless channel measurements. We evaluate our methods on a variety of wireless devices, including laptops, telosB sensor nodes, and Android smartphones, with diverse wireless capabilities. We perform extensive measurements in real-world environments and show that our methods generate high entropy secret bits at a signi cantly faster rate in comparison to existing approaches. While the rst part of this dissertation focuses on achieving secrecy in wireless networks, the second part of this dissertation examines the use of special pulse shaping lters of the lterbank multicarrier (FBMC) physical layer in reliably transmitting data packets at a very high rate. We rst analyze the mutual interference power across subcarriers used by di erent transmitters. Next, to understand the impact of FBMC beyond the physical layer, we devise a distributed and adaptive medium access control protocol that coordinates data packet tra c among the di erent nodes in the network in a best e ort manner. Using extensive simulations, we show that FBMC consistently achieves an order-of-magnitude performance improvement over orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in several aspects, including packet transmission delays, channel access delays, and e ective data transmission rate available to each node in static indoor settings as well as in vehicular networks

Planning an aquifer storage and recovery scheme in the Sherwood Sandstone aquifer

Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) involves the injection of water into an aquifer for subsequent recovery from the same well. Whilst ASR provides a competitive alternative to reservoir storage, a lack of precedence of successful schemes and uncertainties with respect to regulatory requirements, and abstracted water quality and quantity have limited its implementation in the UK. The ambition of this research is to improve understanding of these impediments with particular reference to the Sherwood Sandstone aquifer. Drawing on existing project review and risk management approaches, a decision support tool to help scheme designers scope ASR scheme potential and challenges was developed and tested. The tool provides practitioners with a systematic method for early stage evaluation of ASR schemes with testing confirming broad value and alignment with business processes. Limitations on the recovery of recharged water was investigated through a critical literature review on clogging with geochemical, biological, physical and gaseous binding processes identified as the most likely mechanisms to impact an ASR scheme in this aquifer. Water quality changes during storage and the impact of storage period on recovered water quality were investigated in the laboratory using ASR simulating columns, with storage times of 15, 20, 30 and 60 days. Water quality improvements such as biodegradation of disinfection by-products, denitrification and sulphate reduction were observed. However recovered water quality deteriorated with respect to iron, arsenic, manganese, total organic carbon and nickel. These results, together with the review of regulations conducted as part of decision support tool development, suggest that the current interpretation of the Water Framework Directive requirements is overly restrictive and is deterring wider implementation of ASR in the UK. Conclusions focus on the need for a more appropriate approach to regulating ASR schemes, in particular, one which adopts a risk based approach to determining water quality standards

Design and Development of a Novel Class of Cell Cycle CDK Inhibitors Targeting the Cyclin Binding Groove Utilizing the Replace Strategy

Inhibition of CDK2 activity in G1 and S phases of the cell cycle can promote selective apoptosis of cancer cells through the E2F1 pathway. Currently available CDK inhibitors target the ATP binding pocket and result in lack of specificity for the cell cycle vs. the transcriptional CDKs. It has been shown that a peptide HAKRRLIF derived from the tumor suppressor p21 binds to the cyclin binding groove (CBG) and selectively inhibits cell cycle CDKs (CDK2/Cyclin A, CDK2/Cyclin E and CDK4/Cyclin D). The CBG is unique to cell cycle CDKs hence targeting this site avoids the inhibition of transcriptional CDKs can potentially lead to toxicity. The goal of this project is to iteratively convert potent cyclin groove inhibitory (CGI) peptides into more drug like molecules called FLIPs (Fragment ligated inhibitory peptides) using the REPLACE strategy (Replacement with Partial Ligand Alternatives through Computational Enrichment). FLIPs were constructed by sequentially replacing key peptide binding determinants for RRLIF with fragment like small molecules in order to obtain a non-ATP competitive inhibitor of cell cycle CDKs with improved drug like properties. Fragment alternative capping groups were evaluated by docking, synthesis and testing of FLIPs in competitive binding and cellular viability assays. Partial Ligand Alternatives were identified which interacted with the main subsites of the N-terminal tetrapeptide of HAKRRLIF and were derivatives of phenyl heterocyclic carboxylic acids, furoic, picolinic and benzoic acids. The most effective Ncap was found to be 1-(3,5- dichlorophenyl)-5-methyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxylic acid (35DCPT) ligated to RLIF. In a further iteration of REPLACE, the C-terminal motif was modified with β-homoleucine (βLeu) and N-Methyl Phe or 3-Thienylalanine in order to improve metabolic stability. The lead compound after Ncap and Ccap optimization was found to be 35DCPT-R{βLeu}{3TA}-NH2 (SCCP5964) which has respectable antiproliferative activity and is also capable of inducing a G1 cell cycle arrest. The REPLACE strategy has therefore been further validated in the development of FLIPs molecules as non-ATP competitive CDK inhibitors. These cyclin groove inhibitors represent next generation CDK therapeutics having anti-tumor activity consistent with on target inhibition and demonstrated potential for drug development

The agricultural industry is critical to long-term economic growth & food security. Crop diseases, on the other hand, can pose a significant threat to achieving this expansion. Early diagnosis and categorization of plant diseases are essential for a good outcome. This opened up a slew of new options for study in this field. A lot of effort is being done now to use neural networks to better identify and categorise plant diseases. A Hybrid Multiclass SVM (HM-SVM) model strategy towards leaf disease detection is presented in this research. To distinguish healthy and sick leaves, the researchers developed an HM-SVM for automated feature extraction and classification. Experiment results indicate that the proposed technique is capable of reaching high accuracy. Disease detection as well as identification in large fields using automated techniques is beneficial since it minimises people or farmers' labour, as well as time and money spent on observation and study of illness signs. This study explains how to use Hybrid multiclass SVM to identify and detect leaf diseases. Hybrid Multiclass SVM classifier is used to classify illnesses, and thus the detection accuracy is increased by maximising the information exploitation. We are applying image processing algorithms to classify diseases in this suggested system, and diagnosis may be done fast according to the disease. Crop productivity will be increased as a result of this strategy. Acquisition, image pre-processing, segmentation, and feature extraction are some of the procedures involve
