    The deuteronomic view of history in second temple Judaism

    The Babylonian Exile was a historical catalyst compelling Jewish authors of the Second Temple period to deal with their respective situations in the course of history according to – or against – various predicaments from which they suffered in an unprecedented manner. Second Temple Jews were faced with the most fundamental uneasiness: it seemed that God abandoned his people owing to their breaking of the covenant. Therefore, it was important to reconceptualise their worldview into which creation, history, and covenant could be incorporated and which could vouchsafe the ongoing relationship with God to their respective situations. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: In this article, the worldview of Second Temple Judaism is reflected on by observing how different communities in Second Temple Judaism engaged the Song of Moses in Deuteronomy 31–32. This article focusses on the interpretations of this passage in Second Temple Judaism, with specific reference to selected texts from Qumran, Tobit, the Testament of Moses, Philo, Josephus and Sifre Deuteronomy.     New Approach for Measuring Vub|V_{ub}| at Future BB-Factories

    It is suggested that the measurements of hadronic invariant mass (mXm_X) distributons in the inclusive BXc(u)lνB \rightarrow X_{c(u)} l \nu decays can be useful in extracting the CKM matrix element Vub|V_{ub}|. We investigated hadronic invariant mass distributions within the various theoretical models of HQET, FAC and chiral lagrangian as well as ACCMM model. It is also emphasized that the mXm_X distribution even at the region mX>mDm_{X} > m_{D} in the inclusive bub\rightarrow u are effetive in selecting the events, experimentally viable at the future asymmetric BB factories, with better theoretical understandings.Comment: 11 pages not including 1 figur

    Test of Factorization Hypothesis from Exclusive Non-leptonic B decays

    We investigate the possibility of testing factorization hypothesis in non-leptonic exclusive decays of B-meson. In particular, we considered the non factorizable \bar{B^0} -> D^{(*)+} D_s^{(*)-} modes and \bar{B^0} -> D^{(*)+} (\pi^-, \rho^-) known as well-factorizable modes. By taking the ratios BR(\bar{B^0}-> D^{(*)+}D_s^{(*)-})/BR(\bar{B^0}-> D^{(*)+}(\pi^-,\rho^-)), we found that under the present theoretical and experimental uncertainties there's no evidence for the breakdown of factorization description to heavy-heavy decays of the B meson.Comment: 11 pages; submitted to PR

    Dependence of Variational Perturbation Expansions on Strong-Coupling Behavior. Inapplicability of delta-Expansion to Field Theory

    We show that in applications of variational theory to quantum field theory it is essential to account for the correct Wegner exponent omega governing the approach to the strong-coupling, or scaling limit. Otherwise the procedure either does not converge at all or to the wrong limit.     Arsenic Trioxide Modulates DNA Synthesis and Apoptosis in Lung Carcinoma Cells

    Arsenic trioxide, the trade name Trisenox, is a drug used to treat acute promyleocytic leukemia (APL). Studies have demonstrated that arsenic trioxide slows cancer cells growth. Although arsenic influences numerous signal-transduction pathways, cell-cycle progression, and/or apoptosis, its apoptotic mechanisms are complex and not entirely delineated. The primary objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of arsenic trioxide on DNA synthesis and to determine whether arsenic-induced apoptosis is mediated via caspase activation, p38 mitogen–activated protein kinase (MAPK), and cell cycle arrest. To achieve this goal, lung cancer cells (A549) were exposed to various concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 μg/mL) of arsenic trioxide for 48 h. The effect of arsenic trioxide on DNA synthesis was determined by the [3H]thymidine incorporation assay. Apoptosis was determined by the caspase-3 fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) assay, p38 MAP kinase activity was determined by an immunoblot assay, and cell-cycle analysis was evaluated by the propidium iodide assay. The [3H]thymidine-incorporation assay revealed a dose-related cytotoxic response at high levels of exposure. Furthermore, arsenic trioxide modulated caspase 3 activity and induced p38 MAP kinase activation in A549 cells. However, cell-cycle studies showed no statistically significant differences in DNA content at subG1 check point between control and arsenic trioxide treated cells

    Severe vitamin D deficiency in 6 Canadian First Nation formula-fed infants

    Background. Rickets was first described in the 17th century and vitamin D deficiency was recognized as the underlying cause in the early 1900s. Despite this long history, vitamin D deficiency remains a significant health concern. Currently, vitamin D supplementation is recommended in Canada for breast fed infants. There are no recommendations for supplementation in formula-fed infants. Objective. The objective of this report is to bring attention to the risk of severe vitamin D deficiency in high risk, formula fed infants. Design. A retrospective chart review was used to create this clinical case series. Results. Severe vitamin D deficiency was diagnosed in six formula-fed infants over a two-and-a-half year period. All six infants presented with seizures and they resided in First Nation communities located at latitude 54 in the province of Manitoba. While these infants had several risk factors for vitamin D deficiency, they were all receiving cow's milk based formula supplemented with 400 IU/L of vitamin D. Conclusion. This report suggests that current practice with regards to vitamin D supplementation may be inadequate, especially for high-risk infants. Health care professionals providing service to infants in a similar situation should be aware of this preventable condition. Hopefully this would contribute to its prevention, diagnosis and management

It discusses a study that differentiated levels of research productivity among English and Australian academics working in research-intensive environments in three broad discipline areas: science, engineering and technology; social science and humanities; and medicine and health sciences. The paper explores the different conceptions of research held by these academics in terms of their levels of research productivity, their levels of research training, whether they considered themselves an active researcher and a member of a research team, and their disciplinary differences

    Average Kinetic Energy of Heavy Quark in Semileptonic B Decay

    Within the ACCMM model the average kinetic energy of heavy quark in a heavy-light meson is calculated as p2=32pF2\langle {\bf p}^2 \rangle = {3 \over 2} {p_{_F}}^2, solely from the fact that the Gaussian momentum probability distribution has been taken in the ACCMM model. Therefore, the Fermi momentum parameter pFp_{_F} of the ACCMM model is not a truly free parameter, but is closely related to the average kinetic energy of heavy quark, which is theoretically calculable in principle. In this context, we determine pFp_{_F} by comparing the theoretical prediction of the ACCMM model with the model independent lepton energy spectrum of BeνXB \rightarrow e \nu X from the recent CLEO analysis, and find that pF=0.54 ± 0.150.16p_{_F}=0.54~\pm~^{0.16}_{0.15} GeV. We also calculate pFp_{_F} in the relativistic quark model by applying the quantum mechanical variational method, and obtained pF=0.50.6p_{_F}=0.5\sim 0.6 GeV. We show the correspondences between the relativistic quark model and the heavy quark effective theory. We then clarify the importance of the value of pFp_{_F} in the determination of Vub/Vcb|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|.Comment: 23 pages(LaTeX), 2 Postscript figures, uses aps.st
