The automotive industry developments focused on increasing fuel efficiency are accomplished by weight reduction of vehicles, which consequently results in less negative environmental impact. Usage of low density materials such as Magnesium alloys is an approach to replace heavier structural components. One of the challenges in deformation processing of Magnesium is its low formability attributed to the hexagonal close packed (hcp) crystal structure. The extrusion process is one of the most promising forming processes for Magnesium because it applies a hydrostatic compression state of stress during deformation resulting in improved workability. Many researchers have attempted to fully understand solid state bonding during deformation in different structural materials such as Aluminum, Copper and other metals and alloys. There is a lack of sufficient understanding of the extrusion welding in these materials as well as very limited knowledge on this subject for hollow profiles made from Magnesium alloys. The weld integrity and the characteristic of the welding microstructure are generally unknown. In this dissertation three related research projects are investigated by using different tools such as microstructure characterization, mechanical testing, thermo-mechanical physical simulation and finite element numerical modeling. Project 1: Microstructure characterization supported by mechanical testing of the extrusion welding regions in Magnesium alloy AM30 extrudate. The microstructure characterization was conducted using Light Optical Microscopy (LOM), in addition to LOM the electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) technique was implemented to characterize in depth the deformed and welded microstructure. Project 2: Finite element numerical simulation of AM30 extrudate to model different process parameters and their influence on localized state variables such as strain, strain rate, temperature and normal pressure within the weld zone. Project 3: Physical simulation of the extrusion welding by using Gleeble 3500 thermo-mechanical simulator to create deformation welds in Magnesium alloy AM30 samples in compression test under various temperatures and strain rates conditions.Based on the obtained results from the performed research projects and literature review, a new qualitative criterion of extrusion welding has been introduced as contribution to the field. The criterion and its analysis have provided better understanding of material response to processing parameters and assisted in selecting the processing windows for good practices in the extrusion process. In addition, the new approach contributed to better understanding and evaluating the quality of the solid state bonding of Mg alloy. Accordingly, the criteria help to avoiding formation of potential mechanical and metallurgical imperfections

Experimental and Numerical Study of Texture Evolution and Anisotropic Plastic Deformation of Pure Magnesium under Various Strain Paths

    Get PDF
The deformation behavior and texture evolution of pure magnesium were investigated during plane strain compression, simple compression, and uniaxial tension at room temperature. The distinctive stages in the measured anisotropic stress-strain responses and numerically computed strain-hardening rates were correlated with texture and deformation mechanisms. More specifically, in plane strain compression and simple compression, the onset of tensile twins and the accompanying texture-hardening effect were associated with the initial high strain-hardening rates observed in specimens loaded in directions perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis in most of the grains. The subsequent drop in strain-hardening rates in these samples was correlated with the exhaustion of tensile twins and the activation of pyramidal <c+a> slip systems. The falling strain-hardening rates were observed in simple compression and plane strain compression with loading directions parallel to the c-axis where the second pyramidal <c+a> slip systems were the only slip families that can accommodate deformation. For uniaxial tension with the basal plane parallel to the tensile axis, the prismatic <a> and second pyramidal <c+a> slips are the main deformation mechanisms. The predicted relative slip and twin activities from the crystal plasticity simulations clearly showed the effect of texture on the type of activated deformation mechanisms

Effect of Nickel Content on the Corrosion Resistance of Iron-Nickel Alloys in Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid Pickling Solutions

The effect of Ni content on the resistance against corrosion of Fe-36% Ni and Fe-45% Ni alloys in 1 M hydrochloric acid pickling solution was reported. Various electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques such as potentiodynamic cyclic polarization (CPP), open-circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiostatic current-time (PCT), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) have been employed. CPP measurements indicated that the corrosion current and corrosion rate recorded lower values for the alloy that had higher nickel content. OCP curves proved that the presence of high Ni content shifts the absolute potential to the positive potential direction. EIS results revealed that the surface and polarization resistances were much higher for the alloy with higher Ni content. PCT curves also showed that the absolute currents were lower for Fe-45% Ni alloy. All results were in good agreement with others and confirmed clearly that the corrosion resistance in HCl solutions for Fe-45% Ni alloy was higher than that obtained for Fe-45% Ni alloy

Purpose: The analysis of the characteristics of particles motion is considered in this article, where a model which studies a Newtonian fluid media with specific interest on the analysis of unsteady sedimentation of particles is considered. The numerical solution of this first order differential equation model using an Obrechkoff-type block method is presented. Methodology: The algorithm for the conventional Nyström -type multistep scheme is considered with specific parameter choices in order to obtain the main k-step Obrechkoff-type block method and the required additional method. The unknown coefficients of these methods are obtained by using the concept of Taylor series expansion to obtain the required schemes for the block method which were combined as simultaneous integrators for the solution of the differential equation model.Findings: The block method gave highly accurate results as compared with the exact solution of the model. Furthermore, at selected values of the physical properties of nanoparticles, the solutions using the two-step Obrechkoff-type block method was compared with past literatures and the results were seen to be in agreement. The influence of the physical parameters on terminal velocity is also discussed

All manufacturing engineers are faced with a lot of difficulties and high expenses associated with grinding processes of AZ61. For that reason, manufacturing engineers waste a lot of time and effort trying to reach the required surface roughness values according to the design drawing during the turning process. In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) modeling is used to estimate and optimize the surface roughness (Ra) value in cutting conditions of AZ61 magnesium alloy. A number of ANN models were developed and evaluated to obtain the most successful one. In addition to ANN models, traditional regression analysis was also used to build a mathematical model representing the equation required to obtain the surface roughness. Predictions from the model were examined against experimental data and then compared to the ANN model predictions using different performance criteria such as the mean absolute error, mean square error, and coefficient of determination

Optimization of micro and nano palm oil fuel ash to determine the carbonation resistance of the concrete in accelerated condition

The carbonation rate of reinforced concrete is influenced by three parameters, namely temperature, relative humidity, and concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the surroundings. As knowledge of the service lifespan of reinforced concrete is crucial in terms of corrosion, the carbonation process is important to study, and high-performance durable reinforced concretes can be produced to prolong the effects of corrosion. To examine carbonation resistance, accelerated carbonation testing was conducted in accordance with the standards of BS 1881-210:2013. In this study, 10-30% of micro palm oil fuel ash (mPOFA) and 0.5-1.5% of nano-POFA (nPOFA) were incorporated into concrete mixtures to determine the optimum amount for achieving the highest carbonation resistance after 28 days water curing and accelerated CO2 conditions up to 70 days of exposure. The effect of carbonation on concrete specimens with the inclusion of mPOFA and nPOFA was investigated. The carbonation depth was identified by phenolphthalein solution. The highest carbonation resistance of concrete was found after the inclusion of 10% mPOFA and 0.5% nPOFA, while the lowest carbonation resistance was found after the inclusion of 30% mPOFA and 1.5% nPOFA

Abstract Background Healthcare cannot achieve net-zero carbon without addressing operating theatres. The aim of this study was to prioritize feasible interventions to reduce the environmental impact of operating theatres. Methods This study adopted a four-phase Delphi consensus co-prioritization methodology. In phase 1, a systematic review of published interventions and global consultation of perioperative healthcare professionals were used to longlist interventions. In phase 2, iterative thematic analysis consolidated comparable interventions into a shortlist. In phase 3, the shortlist was co-prioritized based on patient and clinician views on acceptability, feasibility, and safety. In phase 4, ranked lists of interventions were presented by their relevance to high-income countries and low–middle-income countries. Results In phase 1, 43 interventions were identified, which had low uptake in practice according to 3042 professionals globally. In phase 2, a shortlist of 15 intervention domains was generated. In phase 3, interventions were deemed acceptable for more than 90 per cent of patients except for reducing general anaesthesia (84 per cent) and re-sterilization of ‘single-use’ consumables (86 per cent). In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for high-income countries were: introducing recycling; reducing use of anaesthetic gases; and appropriate clinical waste processing. In phase 4, the top three shortlisted interventions for low–middle-income countries were: introducing reusable surgical devices; reducing use of consumables; and reducing the use of general anaesthesia. Conclusion This is a step toward environmentally sustainable operating environments with actionable interventions applicable to both high– and low–middle–income countries

Analysis of Extrusion Welding in Magnesium Alloys – Numerical Predictions and Metallurgical Verification

    Get PDF
AbstractSolid-state bonding or extrusion welding takes place during hot extrusion of hollow shapes. The weld integrity is critical for mechanical performance of the produced profiles. To evaluate the weld integrity, a novel modeling method using DEFORM ™ was proposed by Xu and Misiolek (2011) and modified in the present study. Metallurgical analysis of extruded magnesium alloy AM30 revealed two types of extrusion weld seams. The first seam type does not show a weld line which indicates perfect solid state bonding, and the second type contains a weld line, which could be a potential source of imperfections in the extrudate

This paper targets developing new low-cost sustainable materials. To achieve this objective, aluminum was utilized as base material for metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNC). Three routes of advanced manufacturing techniques were designed and implemented. Flake powder metallurgy as a reliable method to synthesis nanocomposites powder was employed. By reinforcing aluminium with SiC and using a similar amount of both constitutes, three metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) with different properties were produced. The ball milled powder were characterized using filed emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) to analyze the morphology of the powder. Different investigations and analysis were conducted on the produced samples. These include X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, density and porosity, mechanical properties, and frictional performance. The obtained results include relative density, Young&rsquo;s modulus, compressive yield strength, elongation, toughness, hardness, coefficient of friction, and specific wear rate. Achieving superior mechanical and tribological performance is evident from these results. This is accredited to the homogeneity of the reinforcement dispersion within the aluminum matrix
