Endocannabinoid system and anticancer properties of cannabinoids

Cannabinoids impact human body by binding to cannabinoids receptors (CB1 and CB2). The two main phytocannabinoids are Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC interacts with CB1 receptors occurring in central nervous system and is responsible for psychoactive properties of marijuana. CBD has low affinity to CB1 receptor, has no psychoactive characteristics and its medical applications can be wider. CB receptors are part of a complex machinery involved in regulation of many physiological processes – endocannabinoid system. Cannabinoids have found some applications in palliative medicine, but there are many reports concerning their anticancer affects. Agonists of CB1 receptors stimulate accumulation of ceramides in cancer cells, stress of endoplasmic reticulum (ER stress) and, in turn, apoptosis. Effects of cannabinoids showing low affinity to CB receptors is mediated probably by induction of reactive oxygen species production. Knowledge of antitumor activity of cannabinoids is still based only on preclinical studies and there is a necessity to conduct more experiments to assess the real potential of these compounds

OPIS PARAMETRYCZNY MODALNOŚCI DEONTYCZNEJ W POLSKIM I HISZPAŃSKIM KODEKSIE CYWILNYM

The article presents a parameter-based method of description of deontic modality in the Polish and Spanish civil codes. The described units are clauses conveying deontic meanings: obligativity, prohibitivity, permissivity and immunitivity. The clauses are excerpted from the corpus on the basis of criteria proposed for this purpose. Clauses conveying deontic meanings are characterized by various properties. Homogeneous properties are classified into parameters (dimensions). As a theoretical framework for a consistent description of the clauses, eight parameters have been proposed on the basis of an analysis of all clauses conveying deontic meanings. The method proposed for describing clauses conveying deontic meanings makes it possible to characterize them systematically and compare them intra- and interlingually. The comparison of the clauses also enables the entire texts of the Polish and Spanish civil codes to be comparedAbstrakt: Artykuł przedstawia parametryczny (bazujący na wymiarach) aparat teoretyczny służący do systematycznego opisu modalności deontycznej w polskim i hiszpańskim kodeksie cywilnym. Jednostkami opisu są zdania przenoszące następujące znaczenia deontyczne: obligatywność, prohibitywność, permisywność i immunitywność. Zdania te wyodrębniono z kodeksu na podstawie zaproponowanych kryteriów. Zdania wykazują cechy różnego rodzaju. Cechy, które są ze sobą porównywalne, czyli tego samego rodzaju, pogrupowane zostały w zbiory nazywane parametrami. Na podstawie analizy wszystkich zdań przenoszących znaczenia deontyczne zaproponowano osiem wymiarów. Zaproponowana metoda pozwala porównywać zdania przenoszące znaczenia deontyczne ze sobą zarówno w obrębie jednego języka, jak i między oboma językami. To z kolei pozwala na systematyczne porównanie całych tekstów polskiego i hiszpańskiego kodeksu cywilnego

SELECTED PROPOSALS TO REFORM LEGAL LANGUAGE IN SPAIN

W artykule omawiane są propozycje reformy hiszpańskiego języka prawnego na przykładzie wybranych wniosków z prac Komisji ds. Modernizacji Języka Prawa (Comisión para la modernización del lenguaje jurídico), które dotyczą języka przepisów prawnych. Analizowane są również postulaty stosowania języka równościowego w języku prawnym i administracyjnym, wysuwane przez różne środowiska i publikowane w ostatnich latach w Hiszpanii w formie coraz liczniejszych poradników. Porusza się także kwestię krytyki, jakiej poddaje niektóre z tych postulatów Hiszpańska Akademia Królewska (Real Academia Española).The article presents proposals of reforming the Spanish legal language, exemplifying them with selected conclusions of the Spanish Commission for the Modernization of Legal Language (Comisión para la modernización del lenguaje jurídico) concerning the language of legal regulations. It also studies proposals of applying gender equality in legal and administrative language which in recent years have been being put forward by various groups and published in form of numerous manuals. It also deals with the criticism to which the Royal Spanish Academy (Real Academia Española) has subjected some of these manuals

SIGNIFIKATORY OBLIGATYWNOŚCI W POLSKIM I HISZPAŃSKIM KODEKSIE CYWILNYM

In this paper the significators (i. e. linguistic indicators) of one of the deontic meanings, viz. obligation, in the Polish and Spanish civil codes are presented and compared. The significators of obligation which can be words (classified according to the part of speech they belong to) or syntagms, were identified as a result of an analisis of the corpus. Also, the contex of a normative text (here: statutory instruments) can be the only significator of obligation in a sentence which appeared in such a text. In order to provide a more precise description, the significators are classified according to the semantic category of the word which is the subject of the sentence where the significator appeared. It is also indicated whether a significator is used in the present or future tense.Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie i porównanie językowych wykładników jednego ze znaczeń modalności deontycznej, tj. obligatywności (nakazu) w polskim i hiszpańskim kodeksie cywilnym. Na podstawie analizy z tekstów korpusu zostały wyróżnione signifikatory (wykładniki językowe przenoszące znaczenie obligatywności), którymi mogą być wyrazy (podzielone według kategorii partyoratywnej, do której należą) oraz syntagmy. Signifikatorem obligatywności może być również kontekst tekstu normatywnego (tu ustawy). W proponowanym opisie wszystkie signifikatory zostały pogrupowane według kategorii semantycznej wyrazu będącego podmiotem w zdaniu, w którym wystąpił dany signifikator. Zaznaczono również, czy dany signifikator występuje w korpusie w czasie teraźniejszym czy przyszłym

Geometric Quality Testing of the WorldView-2 Image Data Acquired over the JRC Maussane Test Site using ERDAS LPS, PCI Geomatics and Keystone digital photogrammetry software packages - Inital Findings

This report presents the geometric quality results recorded for the five samples of the WorldView-2 Basic and Standard (processing level 1A and 2A) imagery acquired over the JRC Maussane Test Site. Different mathematical models of the WV2 sensor were tested, i.e. RPC-based and rigorous models implemented into PCI Geomatics, Keystone Spacemetric, and ERDAS IMAGINE& LPS software based on the following auxiliary data: - several configurations (eg. 9, 6, 4) of equally distributed GCPs of 0.1m<RMSEx,y,z<0.6m; - DEM of 2m grid and RMSEz=0.6m; - 12 well-distributed independent check points (ICPs) of RMSEx,y,z<0.6m. The preliminary results of the analysis show that the 1-D RMSE of the WV2 image characterised by large off-nadir angle, i.e. greater than 30 degrees (or elevation angle less than 56 deg) is close to or below the 2.5m EU acceptable threshold. Further testing is required, especially for less accurate DTM data, diverse terrains and images characterised by high satellite inclination angle. Consequently, this report recommends that at least 6 (or 9 in areas with terrain slope diversity or high off-nadir angle) well-distributed ground control points during the WV2 sensor modelling phase using the Rational Functions mathematical model should be used. The rigorous model requires a minimum 9 or more ground control points. Accuracy requirements for auxiliary date, i.e. ground control points and DEM, given in ¿Guidelines for Best Practice and Quality Checking of Ortho Imagery¿ should be strictly followed.JRC.DG.G.3-Monitoring agricultural resource

Między biologią a kulturą. Pojęcie rasy w polskiej refleksji XIX wieku

In the nineteenth century, the Polish reflection on race and derivative terms was strongly influenced by the Western thought. New achievements and terminology in the field of natural sciences were adopted. Gradually, there was a change of look at peoples, their origin and diversity. In the Enlightenment, while hierarchizing humankind, its biological variety was emphasized. The Romanticism focused on human culture and spirituality. The Positivism, in turn, based on the achievements of natural sciences, saw the basis for evaluation of human groups in biological criteria. The state of contemporary ideas and knowledge favoured the formulation of various racial theories, which also had their own political context. The analysis of Polish sources made it possible to show the specificity of the domestic view in this field. It was often critical, but also approving the division of humankind into lower and higher races. This resulted from the adoption of a Eurocentric point of view. Historiosophy, seeking factors determining a historical role of a given race, also contributed to the search for differences between the white nations of Europe.W XIX wieku polska refleksja na temat rasy i pojęć pochodnych podlegała silnym wpływom myśli zachodniej. Przyswojono sobie nowe osiągnięcia i terminologię z zakresu nauk przyrodniczych. Stopniowo doszło do przemiany spojrzenia na człowieka, jego pochodzenie i zróżnicowanie. W epoce oświecenia, hierarchizując gatunek ludzki kładziono nacisk na jego biologiczną rozmaitość. Romantyzm zwrócił się ku kulturze i duchowości człowieka. Pozytywizm natomiast, opierając się na osiągnięciach nauk przyrodniczych w kryteriach biologicznych widział podstawę wartościowania grup ludzkich. Stan ówczesnych wyobrażeń i wiedzy sprzyjał formułowaniu rozmaitych teorii rasowych, które miały także swój kontekst polityczny. Analiza polskich źródeł umożliwiła ukazanie specyfiki rodzimego spojrzenia w tej dziedzinie. Często było ono krytyczne, ale jednocześnie aprobujące podział ludzkości na rasy niższe i wyższe. Wynikało to z przyjęcia europocentrycznego punktu widzenia. Historiozofia upatrująca w danej rasie czynnik determinujący jej rolę w dziejach przyczyniła się także do poszukiwania różnic między białymi narodami Europy

Day-of-the-Week Effects in Liquidity on the Warsaw Stock Exchange

The purpose of this study is to explore the day-of-the-week patterns in liquidity on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) using daily turnover as a liquidity measure. The existence of an inverted U-shape in the stock turnover across the trading days is examined. The research sample covers 2502 daily observations in the period January 2005 – December 2014. 53 WSE-listed companies divided into three size groups are investigated. In the study the OLS method with the HAC covariance matrix estimation and the GARCH-type models are employed. The results indicate that liquidity on the WSE tends to be significantly lower on Mondays and higher on Wednesdays in comparison with the other days of the week. However, the inverted U-shape in daily turnover occurs only among the companies with the largest market capitalization

Kompsat-2: Initial findings of Geometric Image Quality Analysis

This report summarizes the initial evaluation of the geometric characteristics of the single sample the radiometrically corrected Kompsat-2 image acquired over the JRC Maussane Terrestrial Test Site. The objective of this study is threefold: (1) to evaluate the planimetric accuracy in a routine basis production of orthorectified Kompsat-2 imagery; (2) to determine the optimal number and spatial distribution of the GCPs (Ground Control Points) for the Kompsat-2 orthorectification process; (3) to check if the orthorectified imagery of the Kompsat-2 optical sensor fall within the required accuracy criteria for the CwRS 1:10.000 scale of absolute 1-D RMSE of < 2.5m. Based on the limited sample images, the Kompsat-2 orthoimage product accuracy meets the geometric specification of 2.5m (1D) RMSE corresponding to EU technical requirements on the condition of using at least 12 well-distributed ground control points for image correction and orthorectification.JRC.DG.G.3-Monitoring agricultural resource
