5-arylaminouracil derivatives as potential dual-action agents
Several 5-aminouracil derivatives that have previously been shown to inhibit Mycobacterium tuberculosis growth at concentrations of 5-40 μg/mL are demonstrated to act also as noncompetitive non-nucleoside inhibitors of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase without causing toxicity in vitro (McyrillicT-4 cells) and ex vivo (human tonsillar tissue)
A Search for leptophilic Z_(l) boson at future linear colliders
We study the possible dynamics associated with leptonic charge in future
linear colliders. Leptophilic massive vector boson, Z_(l), have been
investigated through the process e^(+)e^(-) -> mu^(+)mu^(-). We have shown that
ILC and CLIC will give opportunity to observe Z_(l) with masses up to the
center of mass energy if the corresponding coupling constant g_(l) exceeds
10^(-3).Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
Exactly Marginal Deformations and Global Symmetries
We study the problem of finding exactly marginal deformations of N=1
superconformal field theories in four dimensions. We find that the only way a
marginal chiral operator can become not exactly marginal is for it to combine
with a conserved current multiplet. Additionally, we find that the space of
exactly marginal deformations, also called the "conformal manifold," is the
quotient of the space of marginal couplings by the complexified continuous
global symmetry group. This fact explains why exactly marginal deformations are
ubiquitous in N=1 theories. Our method turns the problem of enumerating exactly
marginal operators into a problem in group theory, and substantially extends
and simplifies the previous analysis by Leigh and Strassler. We also briefly
discuss how to apply our analysis to N=2 theories in three dimensions.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figure
A role for 3′-O-β-D-ribofuranosyladenosine in altering plant immunity
This is the final version. Available on open access from Elsevier via the DOI in this recordOur understanding of how, and the extent to which, phytopathogens reconfigure host metabolic pathways to enhance virulence is remarkably limited. Here we investigate the dynamics of the natural disaccharide nucleoside, 3′-O-β-D-ribofuranosyladenosine, in leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana infected with virulent Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato strain DC3000. 3′-O-β-D-ribofuranosyladenosine is a plant derived molecule that rapidly accumulates following delivery of P. syringae type III effectors to represent a major component of the infected leaf metabolome. We report the first synthesis of 3′-O-β-D-ribofuranosyladenosine using a method involving the condensation of a small excess of 1-O-acetyl-2,3,5-three-O-benzoyl-β-ribofuranose activated with tin tetrachloride with 2′,5′-di-O-tert-butyldimethylsilyladenosine in 1,2-dichloroethane with further removal of silyl and benzoyl protecting groups. Interestingly, application of synthetic 3′-O-β-D-ribofuranosyladenosine did not affect either bacterial multiplication or infection dynamics suggesting a major reconfiguration of metabolism during pathogenesis and a heavy metabolic burden on the infected plant.Russian Science FoundationBiotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC

Precision Gauge Unification from Extra Yukawa Couplings
We investigate the impact of extra vector-like GUT multiplets on the
predicted value of the strong coupling. We find in particular that Yukawa
couplings between such extra multiplets and the MSSM Higgs doublets can resolve
the familiar two-loop discrepancy between the SUSY GUT prediction and the
measured value of alpha_3. Our analysis highlights the advantages of the
holomorphic scheme, where the perturbative running of gauge couplings is
saturated at one loop and further corrections are conveniently described in
terms of wavefunction renormalization factors. If the gauge couplings as well
as the extra Yukawas are of O(1) at the unification scale, the relevant
two-loop correction can be obtained analytically. However, the effect persists
also in the weakly-coupled domain, where possible non-perturbative corrections
at the GUT scale are under better control.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX. v6: Important early reference adde
The Impact of a 4th Generation on Mixing and CP Violation in the Charm System
We study D0-D0 mixing in the presence of a fourth generation of quarks. In
particular, we calculate the size of the allowed CP violation which is found at
the observable level well beyond anything possible with CKM dynamics. We
calculate the semileptonic asymmetry a_SL and the mixing induced CP asymmetry
eta_fS_f which are correlated with each other. We also investigate the
correlation of eta_fS_f with a number of prominent observables in other mesonic
systems like epsilon'/epsilon, Br(K_L -> pi0 nu nu), Br(K+ -> pi+ nu nu),
Br(B_s ->mu+ mu-), Br(B_d -> mu+ mu-) and finally S_psi phi in the B_s system.
We identify a clear pattern of flavour and CP violation predicted by the SM4
model: While simultaneous large 4G effects in the K and D systems are possible,
accompanying large NP effects in the B_d system are disfavoured. However this
behaviour is not as pronounced as found for the LHT and RSc models. In contrast
to this, sizeable CP violating effects in the B_s system are possible unless
extreme effects in eta_fS_f are found, and Br(B_s ->mu+ mu-) can be strongly
enhanced regardless of the situation in the D system. We find that, on the
other hand, S_psi phi > 0.2 combined with the measured epsilon'/epsilon
significantly diminishes 4G effects within the D system.Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures, v2 (references added
Neutrino masses from new generations
We reconsider the possibility that Majorana masses for the three known
neutrinos are generated radiatively by the presence of a fourth generation and
one right-handed neutrino with Yukawa couplings and a Majorana mass term. We
find that the observed light neutrino mass hierarchy is not compatible with low
energy universality bounds in this minimal scenario, but all present data can
be accommodated with five generations and two right-handed neutrinos. Within
this framework, we explore the parameter space regions which are currently
allowed and could lead to observable effects in neutrinoless double beta decay,
conversion in nuclei and experiments. We
also discuss the detection prospects at LHC.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures. Version to be published. Some typos corrected.

A fourth generation, anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry and the LHC
A fourth chiral generation, with in the range GeV and a moderate value of the CP-violating phase can explain the
anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry observed recently by the D0
collaboration. The required parameters are found to be consistent with
constraints from other and decays. The presence of such quarks, apart
from being detectable in the early stages of the LHC, would also have important
consequences in the electroweak symmetry breaking sector.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, Figure 1 is modified, more discussions are added

Exploring T and S parameters in Vector Meson Dominance Models of Strong Electroweak Symmetry Breaking
We revisit the electroweak precision tests for Higgsless models of strong
EWSB. We use the Vector Meson Dominance approach and express S and T via
couplings characterizing vector and axial spin-1 resonances of the strong
sector. These couplings are constrained by the elastic unitarity and by
requiring a good UV behavior of various formfactors. We pay particular
attention to the one-loop contribution of resonances to T (beyond the chiral
log), and to how it can improve the fit. We also make contact with the recent
studies of Conformal Technicolor. We explain why the second Weinberg sum rule
never converges in these models, and formulate a condition necessary for
preserving the custodial symmetry in the IR.Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures; v3: refs added, to appear in JHE
