Paying a visit to the memorials of the Japanese war dead in Malta

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the Japanese Naval Memorial which is located at the Kalkara Naval Cemetery in Malta. It seeks to understand why Japanese coming to Malta are motivated to pay a visit to such a site, which has a symbiotic relationship with the memory of the First World War. This memorial is actually dedicated to the 68 war-dead, who belonged to His Imperial Japanese Majesty’s 2nd Detached Squadron which operated from Malta in 1917 and 1918. The squadron played an important role in protecting the Allied convoys in the Mediterranean.peer-reviewe

Within Eastern Walls: A Vision of Syrian Society From Within.

My research is based on twenty months' fieldwork carried out in Qamishly in Syrian Jazirah. The purpose of my study is to examine the lives of women in this community. Why women? The relations among women in this community are close and confidences easily shared; not so, for me, among men. The network path for external communication in this society is contained almost exclusively within the male world. I wished therefore to examine the society from the inside, using the eyes of women, to determine attitudes to ethnic, sectarian and class issues. For me, as a Japanese, a particular area of interest was the extent to which women's concepts of social duty and obligation led to their individuality being subordinated. In this society, the burden of duty and obligation falls most heavily on women. The inhabitants of Jazirah fall into three main groups: local Arabs (Shawaya), Kurds and Christians which are further subdivided into tribes (Arabs and Kurds) or sects (Christians). In my study, I focus on the local Arab tribal confederation known as the Tai. The mechanism by which individuals identify themselves with their grouping, whether religious, tribal or class lies at the root of the whole network of obligations and restrictions on the behaviour of female members of society. Not only do women take care not to fall victim to rumour, speculation or gossip, which in Jazirah is elevated almost to an art form. From the point of view of individual reputation, a woman will also be under pressure from her male kin. The standing and reputation of men in society are also vulnerable to any apparent failure to keep the family women under control. Jazirah women struggle with the dual obligations of ensuring their own and their family's honour and position in society in the context of a rigid social code at the same time as expressing themselves as individual, as personalities and as women. Some succeed

Recovery of the procedure of combined handling of elucidation methods for interpretable structure elucidation for decreasing frequencies of organic structure revision

Maybe more than one hundred papers on revision of organic structure appear every year. Most of them derive from unreasonable neglect of correct structures because of picking-up/angling methodology. Antithetically, the present paper recommends scooping-up/netting one as a proper systematic procedure in order to avoid such careless and unreasonable neglect as much as possible by indicating existence of informational homologues, which are answers matching with provided pieces of structure information. This was invented by a Japanese company JEOL for its commercial computer program for automated organic structure elucidation, Combined Handling of Elucidation Methods for Interpretable Chemical Structures (CHEMICS). But the basic policy of CHEMICS has been changed to kinds of picking-up methods by people who carried away the name without understanding importance of the policy. In order to aim to recover scooping-up methodology, the present paper shows four examples of our analysis, exemplifying neglected informational homologues, and demonstrating that scooping-up methodology is better.

Effect of Live Lactobacillus Paracasei NFRI 7415 on the Preference for a Lard Diet or Fish Oil Diet in Rats

This study examined the effect of live Lactobacillus paracasei NFRI 7415 on the preference of a lard diet (LD) and a fish-oil diet (FD) in rats. 4-week-old male Fischer 344 rats were fed one of four diets; LD, LD + lactic acid bacteria (LLD), FD and FD + lactic acid bacteria for 4 weeks (dietary experimental period). The LLD and FLD groups freely ingested water containing Lb. paracasei NFRI 7415 (107 cfu/ml). After 4 weeks, all rats were placed on a two-choice diet program in which they self-selected from two food cups, each containing either the LD or the FD for 5 weeks (self-selection period). After the dietary experimental period, there was no significant difference in the final body weight and total food intake among the four groups. The intake of fish-oil and live Lb. paracasei NFRI 7415 was increasing the fecal lipids excretion, and it effectively reduced plasma total cholesterol concentration (p<0.05). It was indicated that the intake of live Lb. paracasei NFRI 7415 was no influence on the preference for fat in the dietary experimental period and the self-selection period

Study of Fall and Fracture Risk in Menopausal Women Living in Urban Areas for the Prevention of Osteoporotic Fractures

The purpose of this study was to clarify whether preventive measures against falling, which leads to bone fractures, should be started in the senile stage or peri-menopausal period, when the bone mass decreases markedly. In a total of 395 females aged 45, 50, 55, 60, and 65, we measured bone density of the lumbar spine by DXA, calcaneus bone density by SXA, and they answered a questionnaire regarding their health status during a medical check-up at their public health care center. We conducted a questionnaire survey by mail 2 years after the check-up, and investigated their experiences of falling and bone fractures and the situation in which these incidents happened, and analyzed the occurrence of falling and bone fractures in menopausal women and associated factors. (The number of subjects involved in the analysis was 265.) A total of 23% experienced falls, 3.4% (9 people) occured fractures over the period of 2 years, and no significant difference was noted among the ages. Most falls occurred outdoors, on steps while they were walking. The reasons for falling were mostly related to external factors, such as slipping and tripping. The risk factors associated with falling for menopausal women were a high BMI and body fat percentage, weak grip strength. These results suggest that the prevention of falling in the menopausal period is essential, and that maintaining an appropriate physique and improving bone density and body strength are important measures. It was suggested that the promotion of concrete measures against falling not only for the elderly but also for menopausal women is essential

Genomic DNA sequences of non GT-AG introons in human mRNA genes

    Get PDF
We searched human genome DNA sequences in the DDBJ/GenBank/EMBL for introns of mRNA genes which do not conform to the GT-AG rule, and collected 5791 fragments which do not form exon parts. Of these 159 are not of GT-AG form. Then we eliminated 19 because of non introns that were yielded by clerical error, frameshift, edition policy, and so on. Major part (94) of the 140 remaining sequences can be considered also to be GT-AG forms with alternative interpretation. There are several mRNAs carrying more than one intron where not GT-AG forms but non-GT-AG ones are chosen. This suggests easy usage of easy selection, even when there is more than one candidate, by easy computer software to infer an intron sequence as the logical difference between a gene and its corresponding cDNA
