We determined the response characteristics and functional correlates of the dynamic relationship between the rate (Δ) of oxygen consumption ( O2) and the applied power output (work rate = WR) during ramp-incremental exercise in patients with mitochondrial myopathy (MM). Fourteen patients (7 males, age 35.4 ± 10.8 years) with biopsy-proven MM and 10 sedentary controls (6 males, age 29.0 ± 7.8 years) took a ramp-incremental cycle ergometer test for the determination of the O2 on-exercise mean response time (MRT) and the gas exchange threshold (GET). The ΔO2/ΔWR slope was calculated up to GET (S1), above GET (S2) and over the entire linear portion of the response (S T). Knee muscle endurance was measured by isokinetic dynamometry. As expected, peak O2 and muscle performance were lower in patients than controls (P O2/ΔWR than controls, especially the S2 component (6.8 ± 1.5 vs 10.3 ± 0.6 mL·min-1·W-1, respectively; P O2/ΔWR (S T) and muscle endurance, MRT-O2, GET and peak O2 in MM patients (P O2/ΔWR below 8 mL·min-1·W-1 had severely reduced peak O2 values (O2) had lower ΔO2/ΔWR (P O2/ΔWR) is typically reduced in patients with MM, being related to increased functional impairment and higher cardiopulmonary stress

Efeito da acidificação, fermentação e adição de cálcio na qualidade de couve-flor (Brassica oleraceae L.) processada pelo calor

The present work was developed to provide information currently lacking in the literature on the effect of acidification (five organic acids), fermentation and addition of calcium on the quality of canned cauliflower (cultivar Shiromaru III). Quality evaluation of the processed cauliflowers was determined by physical, chemical, microbiological and sensorial analysis, after a two month storage period at room temperature. The results showed the possibility of processing high quality canned cauliflowers by small canneries with low cost equipment and less energy requirement.

Palaeontological framework from Pirabas Formation (North Brazil) used as potential model for equatorial carbonate platform

The Pirabas Formation (early to middle Miocene) from the equatorial margin of North Brazil is characterized by a shallow-marine carbonate platform with high fossil diversity and abundant micro- and macrofossil remains. The Pirabas Formation represents a unique carbonate system along the Atlantic margin of South America that developed before the onset of the Amazon delta. We studied the palaeontology and lithofacies of outcrops of the uppermost Pirabas Formation and found that was deposited in a coastal marine environment with marginal lagoons under the influence of a tidal regime and tropical storms. The remains of calcareous algae, molluscs, crustaceans, echinoiderms, bryozoans, solitary corals, fish and marine mammals, together with foraminifera, ostracods and other marine microfossils, shaped a biogenic framework, that together with the post-depositional processes of dissolution of skeletal grains, is responsible for the mean packstone-floatstone porosity of 14.9%. The palaeontological framework and the petrophysical characterization of the carbonate rocks from the uppermost Pirabas Formation outcrop represent a baseline to interpret the entire Pirabas Formation in the subsurface stratigraphic sections (cores) of this important Neogene unit. Considering that carbonate rocks account for ~50% of oil and gas reservoirs around the world, this research provides a model for Neogene tropical carbonate deposits useful for carbonate petroliferous reservoirs in the Brazilian equatorial basins.publishe

Use of Melaleuca alternifolia Cheel (Myrtaceae) oil in dentistry: perspectives on its use as alternative antimicrobial to infectious diseases of oral origin

The interest in alternative medicines, especially those from natural extracts, has increased in recent decades. Melaleuca alternifolia is a shrub belonging to the genus Melaleuca, popularly known as tea tree, the main product of which is its essential oil (TTO - tea tree oil), of great medicinal importance for its proven bactericidal and antifungal activity against several human pathogens. By virtue of its therapeutic activity in various medical specialties, TTO is now used in dentistry. This literature review was conducted in order to discuss the tests already carried out with TTO against microorganisms related to dental caries, periodontal disease and pulpal problems. Melaleuca oil has shown good in vitro antibacterial activity against oral microorganisms; however, research involving the study of its mechanism of action on the microbial cells or in vivo studies are still scarce and need to be done since this product may be useful in dentistry, either in the chemical maintenance of hygiene or in the prevention of oral diseases.O interesse por medicamentos alternativos, principalmente daqueles provenientes de extratos naturais, tem aumentado nas últimas décadas.

Novel luminescent materials based on silica doped with an europium(III) complex of 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid: the crystal structure of [(nBu4N)2[Eu(2,6-Hdhb)(5)(H2O)(2)]

Novel luminescent materials were prepared by introducing a new Eu3+ complex of 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,6-H2dhb) into a silica gel made by the sol–gel method. The crystal structure of the resulting complex [nBu4N]2[Eu(2,6-Hdhb)5(H2O)2] was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound was further characterised using FTIR, FT-Raman and elemental analysis. Photoluminescence measurements were performed for the isolated Eu(III) 2,6-dihydroxybenzoate complex and also for the related silica composite material
