Exotic solutions in string theory
Solutions of classical string theory, correspondent to the world sheets,
mapped in Minkowsky space with a fold, are considered. Typical processes for
them are creation of strings from vacuum, their recombination and annihilation.
These solutions violate positiveness of square of mass and Regge condition. In
quantum string theory these solutions correspond to physical states |DDF>+|sp>
with non-zero spurious component.Comment: accepted in Il Nuovo Cimento A for publication in 199
Production of nanoporous sorbents by partial steam-air conversion of charcoal
An effective sorbent is activated carbon having a developed nanoporous structure with an average pore diameter about 2-4 nm. Perspective method of activated carbon production is the partial steam conversion of the coal bed in boiler furnaces of power plants. The additional thermal energy is produced by burning the syngas. The aim of this work is to study the co-production of activated carbon and syngas by partial steam-air conversion of charcoal. Due to the presence of oxygen in the flow, intensification of conversion occurs. In the laboratory bed reactor, the mass loss curves and the syngas composition were obtained at temperatures of 800°C and 900°C. Two zones with different reaction mechanisms were identified on the height of the bed. The reactions between carbon and steam shift toward hydrogen formation in the oxygen zone. The dependence of the porous structure of the activated carbon on the conversion degree of the raw material is obtained. The maximum of micropores is formed at a conversion degree of 0.5. The material and energy balance of the partial conversion in the laboratory reactor was estimated. © 2018 Institute of Physics Publishing. Magnetic and spectral properties of multi-sublattice oxides SrY2O4:Er3+ and SrEr2O4
SrEr2O4 is a geometrically frustrated magnet which demonstrates rather
unusual properties at low temperatures including a coexistence of long- and
short-range magnetic order, characterized by two different propagation vectors.
In the present work, the effects of crystal fields (CF) in this compound
containing four magnetically inequivalent erbium sublattices are investigated
experimentally and theoretically. We combine the measurements of the CF levels
of the Er3+ ions made on a powder sample of SrEr2O4 using neutron spectroscopy
with site-selective optical and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements
performed on single crystal samples of the lightly Er-doped nonmagnetic
analogue, SrY2O4. Two sets of CF parameters corresponding to the Er3+ ions at
the crystallographically inequivalent lattice sites are derived which fit all
the available experimental data well, including the magnetization and dc
susceptibility data for both lightly doped and concentrated samples.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure
Superintegrable systems with spin and second-order integrals of motion
We investigate a quantum nonrelativistic system describing the interaction of
two particles with spin 1/2 and spin 0, respectively. We assume that the
Hamiltonian is rotationally invariant and parity conserving and identify all
such systems which allow additional integrals of motion that are second order
matrix polynomials in the momenta. These integrals are assumed to be scalars,
pseudoscalars, vectors or axial vectors. Among the superintegrable systems
obtained, we mention a generalization of the Coulomb potential with scalar
potential and spin orbital one

Pauli equation and the method of supersymmetric factorization
We consider different variants of factorization of a 2x2 matrix
Schroedinger/Pauli operator in two spatial dimensions. They allow to relate its
spectrum to the sum of spectra of two scalar Schroedinger operators, in a
manner similar to one-dimensional Darboux transformations. We consider both the
case when such factorization is reduced to the ordinary 2-dimensional SUSY QM
quasifactorization and a more general case which involves covariant
derivatives. The admissible classes of electromagnetic fields are described and
some illustrative examples are given.Comment: 18 pages, Late
Analytic calculation of nonadiabatic transition probabilities from monodromy of differential equations
The nonadiabatic transition probabilities in the two-level systems are
calculated analytically by using the monodromy matrix determining the global
feature of the underlying differential equation. We study the time-dependent
2x2 Hamiltonian with the tanh-type plus sech-type energy difference and with
constant off-diagonal elements as an example to show the efficiency of the
monodromy approach. The application of this method to multi-level systems is
also discussed.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure
Intrinsic Terahertz Plasmons and Magnetoplasmons in Large Scale Monolayer Graphene
We show that in graphene epitaxially grown on SiC the Drude absorption is
transformed into a strong terahertz plasmonic peak due to natural nanoscale
inhomogeneities, such as substrate terraces and wrinkles. The excitation of the
plasmon modifies dramatically the magneto-optical response and in particular
the Faraday rotation. This makes graphene a unique playground for
plasmon-controlled magneto-optical phenomena thanks to a cyclotron mass 2
orders of magnitude smaller than in conventional plasmonic materials such as
noble metals.Comment: to appear in Nano Letter
Curve crossing in linear potential grids: the quasidegeneracy approximation
The quasidegeneracy approximation [V. A. Yurovsky, A. Ben-Reuven, P. S.
Julienne, and Y. B. Band, J. Phys. B {\bf 32}, 1845 (1999)] is used here to
evaluate transition amplitudes for the problem of curve crossing in linear
potential grids involving two sets of parallel potentials. The approximation
describes phenomena, such as counterintuitive transitions and saturation
(incomplete population transfer), not predictable by the assumption of
independent crossings. Also, a new kind of oscillations due to quantum
interference (different from the well-known St\"uckelberg oscillations) is
disclosed, and its nature discussed. The approximation can find applications in
many fields of physics, where multistate curve crossing problems occur.Comment: LaTeX, 8 pages, 8 PostScript figures, uses REVTeX and psfig,

A System for Measurement of Convection Aboard Space Station
A simple device for direct measurement of buoyancy driven fluid flows in a low-gravity environment is proposed. A system connecting spacecraft accelerometers data and results of thermal convection in enclosure measurements and numerical simulations is developed. This system will permit also to evaluate the low frequency microacceleration component. The goal of the paper is to present objectives and current results of ground-based experimental and numerical modeling of this convection detector
