Passing through the bounce in the ekpyrotic models
By considering a simplified but exact model for realizing the ekpyrotic
scenario, we clarify various assumptions that have been used in the literature.
In particular, we discuss the new ekpyrotic prescription for passing the
perturbations through the singularity which we show to provide a spectrum
depending on a non physical normalization function. We also show that this
prescription does not reproduce the exact result for a sharp transition. Then,
more generally, we demonstrate that, in the only case where a bounce can be
obtained in Einstein General Relativity without facing singularities and/or
violation of the standard energy conditions, the bounce cannot be made
arbitrarily short. This contrasts with the standard (inflationary) situation
where the transition between two eras with different values of the equation of
state can be considered as instantaneous. We then argue that the usually
conserved quantities are not constant on a typical bounce time scale. Finally,
we also examine the case of a test scalar field (or gravitational waves) where
similar results are obtained. We conclude that the full dynamical equations of
the underlying theory should be solved in a non singular case before any
conclusion can be drawn.Comment: 17 pages, ReVTeX 4, 13 figures, minor corrections, conclusions

Regular black holes in quadratic gravity
The first-order correction of the perturbative solution of the coupled
equations of the quadratic gravity and nonlinear electrodynamics is
constructed, with the zeroth-order solution coinciding with the ones given by
Ay\'on-Beato and Garc{\'\i}a and by Bronnikov. It is shown that a simple
generalization of the Bronnikov's electromagnetic Lagrangian leads to the
solution expressible in terms of the polylogarithm functions. The solution is
parametrized by two integration constants and depends on two free parameters.
By the boundary conditions the integration constants are related to the charge
and total mass of the system as seen by a distant observer, whereas the free
parameters are adjusted to make the resultant line element regular at the
center. It is argued that various curvature invariants are also regular there
that strongly suggests the regularity of the spacetime. Despite the complexity
of the problem the obtained solution can be studied analytically. The location
of the event horizon of the black hole, its asymptotics and temperature are
calculated. Special emphasis is put on the extremal configuration
A Coulomb gas approach to the anisotropic one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at arbitrary filling
We establish a mapping of a general spin-fermion system in one dimension into
a classical generalized Coulomb gas. This mapping allows a renormalization
group treatment of the anisotropic Kondo chain both at and away from
half-filling. We find that the phase diagram contains regions of paramagnetism,
partial and full ferromagnetic order. We also use the method to analyze the
phases of the Ising-Kondo chain.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figure
Klein tunneling in graphene: optics with massless electrons
This article provides a pedagogical review on Klein tunneling in graphene,
i.e. the peculiar tunneling properties of two-dimensional massless Dirac
electrons. We consider two simple situations in detail: a massless Dirac
electron incident either on a potential step or on a potential barrier and use
elementary quantum wave mechanics to obtain the transmission probability. We
emphasize the connection to related phenomena in optics, such as the
Snell-Descartes law of refraction, total internal reflection, Fabry-P\'erot
resonances, negative refraction index materials (the so called meta-materials),
etc. We also stress that Klein tunneling is not a genuine quantum tunneling
effect as it does not necessarily involve passing through a classically
forbidden region via evanescent waves. A crucial role in Klein tunneling is
played by the conservation of (sublattice) pseudo-spin, which is discussed in
detail. A major consequence is the absence of backscattering at normal
incidence, of which we give a new shorten proof. The current experimental
status is also thoroughly reviewed. The appendix contains the discussion of a
one-dimensional toy model that clearly illustrates the difference in Klein
tunneling between mono- and bi-layer graphene.Comment: short review article, 18 pages, 14 figures; v3: references added,

Similaridade De Solos Quanto A Salinidade No Vale Perenizado Do Rio Trussu, Ceará
The goal was to evaluate the impacts of irrigation with addition of salts on soils of two irrigated areas in the perennial stretch of Trussu River, Iguatu, Ceará, located in the Brazilian semiarid, by applying the multivariate statistical technique, and clustering analysis, as a tool to identify the similarity of the areas in time and space. Samples were collected in three areas: one with forest regeneration, cultivated with irrigated pasture and another with irrigated guava. Soil samples were collected every two months from May/2013 to April/2014 in 0-30 cm; 30-60 cm; 60-90 cm layers. The following attributes were considered: Electrical Conductivity of the saturation extract (EC), pH, PES (percentage of exchangeable sodium), SAR (sodium adsorption ratio) and soluble ions Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl-. Group 1 was formed by soils presenting the lowest salts concentration average, composed for all samples taken in the regeneration forest soils, seven originating from areas with pasture and six from areas with guava, regardless of the sampled layer or collection time. Group 2 expresses a complete dissimilarity of information on the regeneration forest, since no information on this area is present in this group. The largest salt concentrations in Group 2 indicates that there was an accumulation of ions in the soil in the irrigated areas, but not at a level that could compromise plant growth and jeopardize both soils as salinity. The separation of these soils into groups containing similar soil in salinity can contribute to management strategies to be adopted for each soil group formed. © 2016, Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP. Transmission through Biased Graphene Strip
We solve the 2D Dirac equation describing graphene in the presence of a
linear vector potential. The discretization of the transverse momentum due to
the infinite mass boundary condition reduced our 2D Dirac equation to an
effective massive 1D Dirac equation with an effective mass equal to the
quantized transverse momentum. We use both a numerical Poincare Map approach,
based on space discretization of the original Dirac equation, and direct
analytical method. These two approaches have been used to study tunneling
phenomena through a biased graphene strip. The numerical results generated by
the Poincare Map are in complete agreement with the analytical results.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Combination of inoculation methods of Azospirilum brasilense with broadcasting of nitrogen fertilizer increases corn yield
Nitrogen (N) is the most limiting nutrient for corn production. Thereby, the goal of the paper was to evaluate inoculation methods of Azospirillum brasilense in order to partially supply N required by the crop. The experiment was carried out in Guarapuava, PR, Brasil, in 2011/2012 growing season. Randomized blocks with factorial 3 inoculation methods (seed treatment, planting furrow and non-inoculated control) x 5 doses of nitrogen (0, 75, 150, 225 and 300kg ha-1) x 8 replications was used as the experimental design. Leaf are index, foliar nitrogen content, total chlorophyll, grains per ear and yield were evaluated. There was significant interaction between inoculation methods and nitrogen fertilization to leaf area index, but not for yield. Inoculation with the diazotrophic bacteria provided yield increase of 702kg ha-1 for inoculation in seeding furrow and 432kg ha-1 for inoculation in seed treatment compared to the control, but both treatments did not differ between each other. Furthermore, total chlorophyll, grains per ear and yield were positively affected, with quadratic response, by the nitrogen fertilization in broadcastin
