    The local dark matter density

    We present the recent robust determination of the value of the Dark Matter density at the Sun\u2019s location (\u3c1) with a technique that does not rely on a global mass-modeling of the Galaxy. The method is based on the local equation of centrifugal equilibrium and depends on local and quite well known quantities such as the angular Sun\u2019s velocity, the disk to dark contribution to the circular velocity at the Sun, and the thin stellar disk scale length. This determination is independent of the shape of the dark matter density profile, the knowledge of the rotation curve at any radius, and the very uncertain bulge/disk/dark-halo mass decomposition. The result is: \u3c1 = 0.43(0.11)(0.10)GeV/cm3, where the quoted uncertainties are due to the uncertainty a) in the slope of the circular-velocity at the Sun location and b) in the ratio between this radius and the exponential length scale of the stellar disk. The devised technique is also able to take into account any future improvement in the data relevant for the estimate

    Personal Qualities of Effective Sport Psychologists: Coping with Organisational Demands in High Performance Sport.

    The purpose of the current study was to explore colleagues’ perspectives of the personal qualities of effective sport psychologists and how these qualities enable practitioners to address the organisational demands they face within their work. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with sport physicians (N = 6) and coaches (N = 7). Data analysis identified three main themes: understanding high performance sport environments and cultures, the wider organisational role in high performance sport, and working with support staff in high performance sport. This study provides insight into the wider organisational role of sport psychology in high performance sport and the personal qualities that are fundamental to effective service delivery in this environment. Suggestions are offered regarding how education and training could better prepare practitioners for addressing organisational demands within their role, by developing trainees’ awareness of their personal qualities and providing them with the opportunity to critically explore these qualities in the context of applied sport psychology practice

    Spontaneous Lorentz Breaking and Massive Gravity

    We study a theory where the presence of an extra spin-two field coupled to gravity gives rise to a phase with spontaneously broken Lorentz symmetry. In this phase gravity is massive, and the Weak Equivalence Principle is respected. The newtonian potentials are in general modified, but we identify an non-perturbative symmetry that protects them. The gravitational waves sector has a rich phenomenology: sources emit a combination of massless and massive gravitons that propagate with distinct velocities and also oscillate. Since their velocities differ from the speed of light, the time of flight difference between gravitons and photons from a common source could be measured.Comment: 4 page

    High Performances Corrugated Feed Horns for Space Applications at Millimetre Wavelengths

    We report on the design, fabrication and testing of a set of high performance corrugated feed horns at 30 GHz, 70 GHz and 100 GHz, built as advanced prototypes for the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) of the ESA Planck mission. The electromagnetic designs include linear (100 GHz) and dual shaped (30 and 70 GHz) profiles. Fabrication has been achieved by direct machining at 30 GHz, and by electro-formation at higher frequencies. The measured performances on side lobes and return loss meet the stringent Planck requirements over the large (20%) instrument bandwidth. Moreover, the advantage in terms of main lobe shape and side lobes levels of the dual profiled designs has been demonstrated.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Experimental Astronom

    Roll rate thresholds and perceived realism in driving simulation

    Due to limited operational space, in dynamic driving simulators it is common practice to implement motion cueing algorithms that tilt the simulator cabin to reproduce sustained accelerations. In order to avoid conflicting inertial cues, the tilt rate is kept below drivers’ perceptual thresholds, which are typically derived from the results of classical vestibular research where additional sensory cues to self-motion are removed. Here we conduct two experiments in order to assess whether higher tilt limits can be employed to expand the user’s perceptual workspace of dynamic driving simulators. In the first experiment we measure detection thresholds for roll in conditions that closely resemble typical driving. In the second experiment we measure drivers’ perceived realism in slalom driving for sub-, near- and supra-threshold roll rates. Results show that detection threshold for roll in an active driving task is remarkably higher than the limits currently used in motion cueing algorithms to drive simulators. Supra-threshold roll rates in the slalom task are also rated as more realistic. Overall, our findings suggest that higher tilt limits can be successfully implemented in motion cueing algorithms to better optimize simulator operational space

    Syndromes associated with mitochondrial DNA depletion

    This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License.Mitochondrial dysfunction accounts for a large group of inherited metabolic disorders most of which are due to a dysfunctional mitochondrial respiratory chain (MRC) and, consequently, deficient energy production. MRC function depends on the coordinated expression of both nuclear (nDNA) and mitochondrial (mtDNA) genomes. Thus, mitochondrial diseases can be caused by genetic defects in either the mitochondrial or the nuclear genome, or in the cross-talk between the two. This impaired cross-talk gives rise to so-called nuclear-mitochondrial intergenomic communication disorders, which result in loss or instability of the mitochondrial genome and, in turn, impaired maintenance of qualitative and quantitative mtDNA integrity. In children, most MRC disorders are associated with nuclear gene defects rather than alterations in the mtDNA itself.The mitochondrial DNA depletion syndromes (MDSs) are a clinically heterogeneous group of disorders with an autosomal recessive pattern of transmission that have onset in infancy or early childhood and are characterized by a reduced number of copies of mtDNA in affected tissues and organs. The MDSs can be divided into least four clinical presentations: hepatocerebral, myopathic, encephalomyopathic and neurogastrointestinal.     Planck LFI flight model feed horns

This paper describes the design, the manufacturing and the testing of the flight model feed horns. They have been designed to optimize the LFI optical interfaces taking into account the tight mechanical requirements imposed by the Planck focal plane layout.     Doing descriptive phenomenological data collection in sport psychology research

    Researchers in the field of sport psychology have begun to highlight the potential of phenomenological ap-proaches in recognising subjective experience and the essential structure of experience. Despite this, phenom-enology has been used inconsistently in the sport psychology literature thus far. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to provide theoretically informed practical guidelines for researchers who wish to employ the descrip-tive phenomenological interview in their studies. The recommended guidelines will be supported by under-pinning theory and brief personal accounts. An argument will also be presented for the potential that descrip-tive phenomenology holds in creating new knowledge through rich description. In doing so, it is hoped that this method will be utilised appropriately in future sport psychology research to not only strengthen and diver-sify the existing literature, but also the knowledge of practitioners working within the applied world of profes-sional sport
