    New physics, the cosmic ray spectrum knee, and pppp cross section measurements

    Full text link
    We explore the possibility that a new physics interaction can provide an explanation for the knee just above 10610^6 GeV in the cosmic ray spectrum. We model the new physics modifications to the total proton-proton cross section with an incoherent term that allows for missing energy above the scale of new physics. We add the constraint that the new physics must also be consistent with published pppp cross section measurements, using cosmic ray observations, an order of magnitude and more above the knee. We find that the rise in cross section required at energies above the knee is radical. The increase in cross section suggests that it may be more appropriate to treat the scattering process in the black disc limit at such high energies. In this case there may be no clean separation between the standard model and new physics contributions to the total cross section. We model the missing energy in this limit and find a good fit to the Tibet III cosmic ray flux data. We comment on testing the new physics proposal for the cosmic ray knee at the Large Hadron Collider.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Dalitz plot analysis of e+ e- --> pi0 pi0 gamma events at SQRT(s) ~ M(phi) with the KLOE detector

    Full text link
    We have studied the Dalitz plot of the e+ e- --> pi0 pi0 gamma events collected at SQRT(s) ~ M(phi) with the KLOE detector. In the dipion invariant mass (Mpp) region below 700 MeV, the process under study is dominated by the non-resonant process e+ e- --> omega pi0 with omega --> pi0 gamma whereas, for higher Mpp values, the radiative phi decay to the f0(980) is the dominant mechanism. Different theoretical models are used to fit the Dalitz plot, taking also into account a possible contribution of the sigma(600). For each model, we extract the f0(980) mass and its coupling to pipi, KKbar and to the phi.Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, submitted to European Physics Journal

    Polarizing a stored proton beam by spin flip?

    We discuss polarizing a proton beam in a storage ring, either by selective removal or by spin flip of the stored ions. Prompted by recent, conflicting calculations, we have carried out a measurement of the spin flip cross section in low-energy electron-proton scattering. The experiment uses the cooling electron beam at COSY as an electron target. The measured cross sections are too small for making spin flip a viable tool in polarizing a stored beam. This invalidates a recent proposal to use co-moving polarized positrons to polarize a stored antiproton beam.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure

    Investigation at a ϕ\phi--factory can shed light on several debated issues in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of kaons and eta/eta^\prime mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter sector. We also report on the e+ee^+ e^- physics in the continuum with the measurements of (multi)hadronic cross sections and the study of gamma gamma processes.Comment: 60 pages, 41 figures; added affiliation for one of the authors; added reference to section

    Preparative Purification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Bacteriophages via the Combination of Gel-Permeation and Anion-Exchage Chromatography

    No full text
    Abstract: We developed and described a method for the purification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteriophages that consists of sequential steps of size-exclusion and anion-exchange chromatography. The technique was tested on five bacteriophages of different size and morphology. Similar results were obtained, which allows the proposed approach to be considered universal and highly scalable. © 2020, Pleiades Publishing, Inc

    V.F. Chernysh, N.N. Haritonova, A.N. Kulikov, P.A. Kacherovich, A.A. Kol'bin S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy, St. Petersburg, Russian Federation Epidermolytic drug reactions (EDR) are severe acute drug-induced allergic disorders characterized by extensive lesions of the skin and mucous membranes. Drug-induced Stevens-Johnson and Lyell's syndromes manifested with acute skin and mucous membrane disorders and often leading to lethal outcome may affect eyelids and ocular surface with different levels of severity and thus can cause serious functional ocular complications. The authors present two clinical reports of patients with ocular EDR manifestations in acute and long-term time periods and review the currently available effective treatment options for patients with such ocular complications and their consequences. The article describes surgical treatments which enabled to achieve satisfactory anatomical and functional results in patients with the above disorders. Timely treatment of Stevens-Johnson and Lyell's syndromes comprising systemic and topical conservative therapy in combination with surgical procedures during the acute stage plays an important role for the prediction of severe long-term ocular complications. The elimination of ocular complications caused by these syndromes is associated with multistage reconstructive surgery. The authors emphasize that long-term follow-up by ophthalmologist will be required for patients who survived Stevens-Johnson and Lyell's syndromes. Synthesis and thermal study of antlerite

    No full text
    Specimens of antlerite of the Cu3(OH)4SO4 and Cu3(OH)4SO4 · 0.25H2O compositions were synthesized and characterized by thermogravimetry in the 20-1000°C temperature range. Temperature ranges of dehydration, dehydroxylation, and desulfation were determined in dynamic, quasi-isothermal, and quasi-isoharic modes. X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy showed that the product of antlerite dehydroxylation is a mixture of crystalline dolerophanite Cu2OSO4 and tenorite CuO
