Rituximab efficacy in caps
Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome (CAPS) – thrombotic microvasculopathy, characterized by involvement of
systems and organs with formation of their insufficiency. Therapy of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants with plasmapheresis and intravenous immunoglobulin demonstrates lack of effectivity. Currently, there are reports of rituximab effectiveness in APS and CAPS, but they are not numerous, especially CAPS. Methods Assessment of the rituximab effectiveness in patients with resistant CAPS. We present the treatment results of two patients with CAPS, who were treated in our clinic
Non-stationary Rayleigh-Taylor instability in supernovae ejecta
The Rayleigh-Taylor instability plays an important role in the dynamics of
several astronomical objects, in particular, in supernovae (SN) evolution. In
this paper we develop an analytical approach to study the stability analysis of
spherical expansion of the SN ejecta by using a special transformation in the
co-moving coordinate frame. We first study a non-stationary spherical expansion
of a gas shell under the pressure of a central source. Then we analyze its
stability with respect to a no radial, non spherically symmetric perturbation
of the of the shell. We consider the case where the polytropic constant of the
SN shell is and we examine the evolution of a arbitrary shell
perturbation. The dispersion relation is derived. The growth rate of the
perturbation is found and its temporal and spatial evolution is discussed. The
stability domain depends on the ejecta shell thickness, its acceleration, and
the perturbation wavelength.Comment: 16 page
Enhanced inverse bremsstrahlung heating rates in a strong laser field
Test particle studies of electron scattering on ions, in an oscillatory
electromagnetic field have shown that standard theoretical assumptions of small
angle collisions and phase independent orbits are incorrect for electron
trajectories with drift velocities smaller than quiver velocity amplitude. This
leads to significant enhancement of the electron energy gain and the inverse
bremsstrahlung heating rate in strong laser fields. Nonlinear processes such as
Coulomb focusing and correlated collisions of electrons being brought back to
the same ion by the oscillatory field are responsible for large angle, head-on
scattering processes. The statistical importance of these trajectories has been
examined for mono-energetic beam-like, Maxwellian and highly anisotropic
electron distribution functions. A new scaling of the inverse bremsstrahlung
heating rate with drift velocity and laser intensity is discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure
Proton deflectometry of a capacitor coil target along two axes
A developing application of laser-driven currents is the generation of magnetic fields of picosecond-nanosecond duration with magnitudes exceeding. Single-loop and helical coil targets can direct laser-driven discharge currents along wires to generate spatially uniform, quasi-static magnetic fields on the millimetre scale. Here, we present proton deflectometry across two axes of a single-loop coil ranging from 1 to 2 mm in diameter. Comparison with proton tracking simulations shows that measured magnetic fields are the result of kiloampere currents in the coil and electric charges distributed around the coil target. Using this dual-axis platform for proton deflectometry, robust measurements can be made of the evolution of magnetic fields in a capacitor coil target
Anomalous Self-Generated Electrostatic Fields in Nanosecond Laser-Plasma Interaction
Electrostatic (E) fields associated with the interaction of a
well-controlled, high-power, nanosecond laser pulse with an underdense plasma
are diagnosed by proton radiography. Using a current 3D wave propagation code
equipped with nonlinear and nonlocal hydrodynamics, we can model the measured
E-fields that are driven by the laser ponderomotive force in the region where
the laser undergoes filamentation. However, strong fields of up to 110 MV/m
measured in the first millimeter of propagation cannot be reproduced in the
simulations. This could point to the presence of unexpected strong thermal
electron pressure gradients possibly linked to ion acoustic turbulence, thus
emphasizing the need for the development of full kinetic collisional
simulations in order to properly model laser-plasma interaction in these
strongly nonlinear conditions.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physics of Plasma
Laser produced electromagnetic pulses : Generation, detection and mitigation
This paper provides an up-to-date review of the problems related to the generation, detection and mitigation of strong electromagnetic pulses created in the interaction of high-power, high-energy laser pulses with different types of solid targets. It includes new experimental data obtained independently at several international laboratories. The mechanisms of electromagnetic field generation are analyzed and considered as a function of the intensity and the spectral range of emissions they produce. The major emphasis is put on the gHz frequency domain, which is the most damaging for electronics and may have important applications. The physics of electromagnetic emissions in other spectral domains, in particular THz and MHz, is also discussed. The theoretical models and numerical simulations are compared with the results of experimental measurements, with special attention to the methodology of measurements and complementary diagnostics. Understanding the underlying physical processes is the basis for developing techniques to mitigate the electromagnetic threat and to harness electromagnetic emissions, which may have promising applications
Measuring magnetic fields in laser-driven coils with dual-axis proton deflectometry
By driving hot electrons between two metal plates connected by a wire loop, high power lasers can generate multi-tesla, quasi-static magnetic fields in miniature coil targets. Many experiments involving laser-coil targets rely on proton deflectometry directed perpendicular to the coil axis to extract a measurement of the magnetic field. In this paper, we show that quantitative measurements using perpendicular probing are complicated by the presence of GV m-1 electric fields in the target that develop on sub-ns timescales. Probing parallel to the coil axis with fiducial grids is shown to reliably separate the electric and magnetic field measurements, giving current estimates of I ≈ 5 kA in 1 mm- and 2 mm-diameter wire loops. An analytic model of proton deflection in electric and magnetic fields is used to benchmark results from the particle-in-cell code and help deconvolve the magnetic and electric field deflections. Results are used to motivate a new experimental scheme that combines a single-plate target with axial proton probing and direct current measurements. This scheme has several important advantages over the traditional target and diagnostic set-up, enabling the robust measurement of coil magnetic fields and plasma properties, as well as making it easier to validate different theoretical models at a range of laser intensities
Observation of the plasma channel dynamics and Coulomb explosion in the interaction of a high-intensity laser pulse with a He gas jet
We report the first interferometric observations of the dynamics of electron-ion cavitation of relativistically self-focused intense 4 TW, 400 fs laser pulse in a He gas jet. The electron density in a channel 1 mm long and 30 μm in diameter drops by a factor of approximately 10 from the maximum value of ∼8×10 19 cm −3 . A high radial velocity of the plasma expansion, ∼3.8×10 8 cm/s, corresponding to an ion energy of about 300 keV, is observed. The total energy of fast ions is estimated to be 6% of the laser pulse energy. The high-velocity radial plasma expulsion is explained by a charge separation due to the strong ponderomotive force. This experiment demonstrates a new possibility for direct transmission of a significant portion of the energy of a laser pulse to ions.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45800/1/11448_2006_Article_813.pd
