Space Station Freedom data management system growth and evolution report
The Information Sciences Division at the NASA Ames Research Center has completed a 6-month study of portions of the Space Station Freedom Data Management System (DMS). This study looked at the present capabilities and future growth potential of the DMS, and the results are documented in this report. Issues have been raised that were discussed with the appropriate Johnson Space Center (JSC) management and Work Package-2 contractor organizations. Areas requiring additional study have been identified and suggestions for long-term upgrades have been proposed. This activity has allowed the Ames personnel to develop a rapport with the JSC civil service and contractor teams that does permit an independent check and balance technique for the DMS
O(N) methods in electronic structure calculations
Linear scaling methods, or O(N) methods, have computational and memory
requirements which scale linearly with the number of atoms in the system, N, in
contrast to standard approaches which scale with the cube of the number of
atoms. These methods, which rely on the short-ranged nature of electronic
structure, will allow accurate, ab initio simulations of systems of
unprecedented size. The theory behind the locality of electronic structure is
described and related to physical properties of systems to be modelled, along
with a survey of recent developments in real-space methods which are important
for efficient use of high performance computers. The linear scaling methods
proposed to date can be divided into seven different areas, and the
applicability, efficiency and advantages of the methods proposed in these areas
is then discussed. The applications of linear scaling methods, as well as the
implementations available as computer programs, are considered. Finally, the

Examining solvent effects on the ultrafast dynamics of catechol
We consider the effect of a polar, hydrogen bond accepting, solvent environment on the excited state decay of catechol following excitation to its first excited singlet state (S1). A comparison of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and explicit-solvent ab initio frequency prediction suggests that 5 mM catechol in acetonitrile is both nonaggregated and in its “closed” conformation, contrary to what has been previously proposed. Using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, we then demonstrate the effects of aggregation on the photoexcited S1 lifetime: at 5 mM catechol (nonaggregated) in acetonitrile, the S1 lifetime is 713 ps. In contrast at 75 mM catechol in acetonitrile, the S1 lifetime increases to 1700 ps. We attribute this difference to aggregation effects on the excited-state landscape. This work has shown that explicitsolvent methodology is key when calculating the vibrational frequencies of molecules in a strongly interacting solvent. Combining this with highly complementary steady-state and transient absorption spectroscopy enables us to gain key dynamical insights into how a prominent eumelanin building block behaves when in polar, hydrogen bond accepting solvents both as a monomer and as an aggregated species

Patterns of media coverage repeated in online abuse on high-profile criminal cases
What relationship do the mainstream media have with online abuse on high-profile criminal cases? This article hopes to make a start at answering this question by examining tweets containing the #McCann hashtag, utilised by a highly engaged community of users to comment on all matters related to the disappearance of British child Madeleine McCann. On #McCann, the child’s parents and other players are often singled out as the perpetrators of her disappearance and other crimes, in a blend of harassment, defamation and insults with conspiracy theories, disinformation and a strong anti-establishment vein typical of the posttruth era. Through an experimental digital ethnography blending elements of content and discourse analysis, this research has observed the #McCann conversation and analysed 500 tweets with the hashtag, observing that some of the most offensive theories posted by users on Twitter reprised themes seen in the mainstream media at the time of the disappearance, which resulted in defamation lawsuits by the McCanns and in complaints about unethical reporting at the Leveson Inquiry. This raises questions about the mainstream media’s responsibility and duty of care towards people they report on in the digital age, and showcases a symbiotic yet diffident relationship between anti-establishment online users and traditional news media
Dimensionality of Carbon Nanomaterials Determines the Binding and Dynamics of Amyloidogenic Peptides: Multiscale Theoretical Simulations
Experimental studies have demonstrated that nanoparticles can affect the rate of protein self-assembly, possibly interfering with the development of protein misfolding diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and prion disease caused by aggregation and fibril formation of amyloid-prone proteins. We employ classical molecular dynamics simulations and large-scale density functional theory calculations to investigate the effects of nanomaterials on the structure, dynamics and binding of an amyloidogenic peptide apoC-II(60-70). We show that the binding affinity of this peptide to carbonaceous nanomaterials such as C60, nanotubes and graphene decreases with increasing nanoparticle curvature. Strong binding is facilitated by the large contact area available for π-stacking between the aromatic residues of the peptide and the extended surfaces of graphene and the nanotube. The highly curved fullerene surface exhibits reduced efficiency for π-stacking but promotes increased peptide dynamics. We postulate that the increase in conformational dynamics of the amyloid peptide can be unfavorable for the formation of fibril competent structures. In contrast, extended fibril forming peptide conformations are promoted by the nanotube and graphene surfaces which can provide a template for fibril-growth
Gas Accretion and Giant Lyman-alpha Nebulae
Several decades of observations and discoveries have shown that high-redshift
AGN and massive galaxies are often surrounded by giant Lyman-alpha nebulae
extending in some cases up to 500 kpc in size. In this review, I discuss the
properties of the such nebulae discovered at z>2 and their connection with gas
flows in and around the galaxies and their halos. In particular, I show how
current observations are used to constrain the physical properties and origin
of the emitting gas in terms of the Lyman-alpha photon production processes and
kinematical signatures. These studies suggest that recombination radiation is
the most viable scenario to explain the observed Lyman-alpha luminosities and
Surface Brightness for the large majority of the nebulae and imply that a
significant amount of dense, ionized and cold clumps should be present within
and around the halos of massive galaxies. Spectroscopic studies suggest that,
among the giant Lyman-alpha nebulae, the one associated with radio-loud AGN
should have kinematics dominated by strong, ionized outflows within at least
the inner 30-50 kpc. Radio-quiet nebulae instead present more quiescent
kinematics compatible with stationary situation and, in some cases, suggestive
of rotating structures. However, definitive evidences for accretion onto
galaxies of the gas associated with the giant Lyman-alpha emission are not
unambiguously detected yet. Deep surveys currently ongoing using other bright,
non-resonant lines such as Hydrogen H-alpha and HeII1640 will be crucial to
search for clearer signatures of cosmological gas accretion onto galaxies and

Music-related activities on Facebook
Despite the current prevalence of users performing musical activities on social media, and on Facebook in particular, little research has examined these behaviors from the perspective of consumer psychology. A cross-sectional, convenience sample of 400 participants (Mage = 22.56, SDage = 7.79) completed an online questionnaire. The findings illustrated that the constructs of opinion leadership, innovativeness, and self-efficacy within the consumer psychology literature were associated with performing music-related activities on Facebook, including the active creation/consumption of music content and use of music listening applications. Thus, music activities performed on Facebook have an overt consumer psychological component. These findings indicate that to understand music-related activities on social media, further research should consider psychological variables in explaining this common and economically important activity
The transformation of transport policy in Great Britain? 'New Realism' and New Labour's decade of displacement activity
In a 1999 paper, Goodwin announced ‘the transformation of transport policy in Great Britain’. His central point was that consensus was emerging among policy makers and academics based on earlier work including Transport: The New Realism, which rejected previous orthodoxy that the supply of road space could and should be continually expanded to match demand. Instead a combination of investment in public transport, walking and cycling opportunities and – crucially – demand management should form the basis of transport policy to address rising vehicle use and associated increases in congestion and pollution / carbon emissions. This thinking formed the basis of the 1997 Labour government’s ‘sustainable transport’ policy, but after 13 years in power ministers neither transformed policy nor tackled longstanding transport trends. Our main aim in this paper is to revisit the concept of New Realism and re-examine its potential utility as an agent of change in British transport policy. Notwithstanding the outcome of Labour’s approach to transport policy, we find that the central tenets of the New Realism remain robust and that the main barriers to change are related to broader political and governance issues which suppress radical policy innovation
