    Accurate radial velocity and metallicity of the Large Magellanic Cloud old globular clusters NGC1928 and NGC1939

    We present results obtained from spectroscopic observations of red giants located in the fields of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular clusters (GCs) NGC1928 and NGC1939. We used the GMOS and AAOmega+2dF spectrographs to obtain spectra centred on the Ca II triplet, from which we derived individual radial velocities (RVs) and metallicities. From cluster members we derived mean RVs of RVNGC1928 = 249.58±4.65 km s-1 and RVNGC1939 = 258.85±2.08 km s-1, and mean metallicities of [Fe/H]NGC1928 = -1.30±0.15 dex and [Fe/H]NGC1939 = -2.00±0.15 dex. We found that both GCs have RVs and positions consistent with being part of the LMC disc, so that we rule out any possible origin, but in the same galaxy. By computing the best solution of a disc that fully contains each GC, we obtained circular velocities for the 15 known LMC GCs. We found that 11/15 of the GCs share the LMC rotation derived from HST and Gaia DR2 proper motions. This outcome reveals that the LMC disc existed since the very early epoch of the galaxy formation and experienced the steep relatively fast chemical enrichment shown by its GC metallicities. The four remaining GCs turned out to have circular velocities not compatible with an in situ cluster formation, but rather with being stripped from the SMC.Fil: Piatti, Andres Eduardo.     Radial Redshift Space Distortions

    The radial component of the peculiar velocities of galaxies cause displacements in their positions in redshift space. We study the effect of the peculiar velocities on the linear redshift space two point correlation function. Our analysis takes into account the radial nature of the redshift space distortions and it highlights the limitations of the plane parallel approximation. We consider the problem of determining the value of \beta and the real space two point correlation function from the linear redshift space two point correlation function.     A lagrangian approach to Burgers turbulence is carried out along the lines of the field theoretical Martin-Siggia-Rose formalism of stochastic hydrodynamics. We derive, from an analysis based on the hypothesis of unbroken galilean invariance, the asymptotic form of the probability distribution function of negative velocity-differences. The origin of Burgers intermittency is found to rely on the dynamical coupling between shocks, identified to instantons, and non-coherent background fluctuations, which, then, cannot be discarded in a consistent statistical description of the flow.Comment: 7 pages; LaTe

    Beyond capitalism and liberal democracy: on the relevance of GDH Cole’s sociological critique and alternative

    This article argues for a return to the social thought of the often ignored early 20th-century English thinker GDH Cole. The authors contend that Cole combined a sociological critique of capitalism and liberal democracy with a well-developed alternative in his work on guild socialism bearing particular relevance to advanced capitalist societies. Both of these, with their focus on the limitations on ‘free communal service’ in associations and the inability of capitalism to yield emancipation in either production or consumption, are relevant to social theorists looking to understand, critique and contribute to the subversion of neoliberalism. Therefore, the authors suggest that Cole’s associational sociology, and the invitation it provides to think of formations beyond capitalism and liberal democracy, is a timely and valuable resource which should be returned to

    An Inversion Method for Measuring Beta in Large Redshift Surveys

    A precision method for determining the value of Beta= Omega_m^{0.6}/b, where b is the galaxy bias parameter, is presented. In contrast to other existing techniques that focus on estimating this quantity by measuring distortions in the redshift space galaxy-galaxy correlation function or power spectrum, this method removes the distortions by reconstructing the real space density field and determining the value of Beta that results in a symmetric signal. To remove the distortions, the method modifies the amplitudes of a Fourier plane-wave expansion of the survey data parameterized by Beta. This technique is not dependent on the small-angle/plane-parallel approximation and can make full use of large redshift survey data. It has been tested using simulations with four different cosmologies and returns the value of Beta to +/- 0.031, over a factor of two improvement over existing techniques.Comment: 16 pages including 6 figures Submitted to The Astrophysical Journa

    A microrod-resonator Brillouin laser with 240 Hz absolute linewidth

    We demonstrate an ultralow-noise microrod-resonator based laser that oscillates on the gain supplied by the stimulated Brillouin scattering optical nonlinearity. Microresonator Brillouin lasers are known to offer an outstanding frequency noise floor, which is limited by fundamental thermal fluctuations. Here, we show experimental evidence that thermal effects also dominate the close-to-carrier frequency fluctuations. The 6-mm diameter microrod resonator used in our experiments has a large optical mode area of ~100 {\mu}m2^2, and hence its 10 ms thermal time constant filters the close-to-carrier optical frequency noise. The result is an absolute laser linewidth of 240 Hz with a corresponding white-frequency noise floor of 0.1 Hz2^2/Hz. We explain the steady-state performance of this laser by measurements of its operation state and of its mode detuning and lineshape. Our results highlight a mechanism for noise that is common to many microresonator devices due to the inherent coupling between intracavity power and mode frequency. We demonstrate the ability to reduce this noise through a feedback loop that stabilizes the intracavity power.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure

    Auditing and Assessing Air Quality in Concentrated Feeding Operations

    The potential adverse effects of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) on the environment are a growing concern. The air quality issues of most concern to CAFO vary but generally include ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, greenhouse gases, and odors. Air pollutants may be regulated by federal and state laws or by nuisance complaints. The United States Environmental Protection Agency, and poultry, swine, and dairy industries recently agreed to the National Air Emissions Monitoring System to fund research on atmospheric emissions from production farms in the United States. Air quality regulations may be based on actual emissions, atmospheric concentrations, or human perception, or via limiting the size or location of CAFO. Measuring the concentrations or emissions of most air pollutants is expensive and complex. Because of spatial and temporal variability, concentrations and emissions must be measured continuously over an extended period of time. Because different methods or models can give different results with the same data set, a multitude of methods should be used simultaneously to assure emissions are reasonable. The “best” method to measure concentrations and emissions will depend upon atmospheric concentrations, cost, facility characteristics, objectives, and other factors. In the future, requirements for monitoring of air emissions from CAFO will probably increase. Reliable processbased models need to be developed so that emissions of air pollutants can be estimated from readily obtained diet, animal, facility, and environmental variables. Auditors will need to be trained in a variety of disciplines including animal sciences, chemistry, engineering, micrometeorology, instrumentation, modeling, and logic

    Volatile organic compound flux from manure of cattle fed diets differing in grain processing method and co-product inclusion

    Odor emissions from livestock production have become increasingly important in the past decade. Odors derived from animal feeding operations are caused by odorous VOC emitted from the mixture of feces and urine, as well as feed and silage which may be experiencing microbial fermentation. Distillers grains are a by-product of corn grain fermentation used to produce fuel ethanol, and this industry has grown rapidly throughout the U.S. in past years. Therefore, the use of wet distillers grains with solubles (WDGS) in feedlot cattle diets has also increased. The objective of this research was to determine specific VOC emissions from feces and urine or a mixture of both, from cattle fed steam flaked or dry-rolled corn (DRC)-based diets containing either 0% or 30% WDGS. Flux of dimethyl trisulfide was greater from feces of cattle fed DRC than steam-flaked corn (SFC) diets. No other differences in flux from feces were detected across dietary treatments for phenol, 4-methylphenol, indole, skatole, dimethyl disulfide, and flux of volatile fatty acids (VFA) such as acetic, propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, and valeric acids (P \u3e 0.15). Flux of skatole, acetic acid, and valeric acid from urine was greater for cattle fed SFC than DRC diets (P \u3c 0.05). Moreover, dimethyl disulfide flux was greater for cattle fed DRC vs. SFC diets (P = 0.05). When evaluating WDGS inclusion in the diet, flux of acetic acid and heptanoic acid from urine was greater when cattle were fed diets containing 0% WDGS than 30% WDGS (P \u3c 0.05). When combining urine and feces in the ratio in which they were excreted from the animal, flux of propionic acid was greater when cattle were fed DRC vs. SFC diets (P = 0.05). Based on these results, the majority of the VOC, VFA, and odor flux from cattle feeding operations is from the urine. Therefore, dietary strategies to reduce odor from cattle feeding facilities should primarily focus on reducing excretion of odorous compounds in the urine

    Reconstruction Analysis of Galaxy Redshift Surveys: A Hybrid Reconstruction Method

    In reconstruction analysis of galaxy redshift surveys, one works backwards from the observed galaxy distribution to the primordial density field in the same region, then evolves the primordial fluctuations forward in time with an N-body code. This incorporates assumptions about the cosmological parameters, the properties of primordial fluctuations, and the biasing relation between galaxies and mass. These can be tested by comparing the reconstruction to the observed galaxy distribution, and to peculiar velocity data. This paper presents a hybrid reconstruction method that combines the `Gaussianization'' technique of Weinberg(1992) with the dynamical schemes of Nusser & Dekel(1992) and Gramann(1993). We test the method on N-body simulations and on N-body mock catalogs that mimic the depth and geometry of the Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey and the Optical Redshift Survey. This method is more accurate than Gaussianization or dynamical reconstruction alone. Matching the observed morphology of clustering can limit the bias factor b, independent of Omega. Matching the cluster velocity dispersions and z-space distortions of the correlation function xi(s,mu) constrains the parameter beta=Omega^{0.6}/b. Relative to linear or quasi-linear approximations, a fully non-linear reconstruction makes more accurate predictions of xi(s,mu) for a given beta, thus reducing the systematic biases of beta measurements and offering further scope for breaking the degeneracy between Omega and b. It also circumvents the cosmic variance noise that limits conventional analyses of xi(s,mu). It can also improve the determination of Omega and b from joint analyses of redshift & peculiar velocity surveys as it predicts the fully non-linear peculiar velocity distribution at each point in z-space.Comment: 72 pages including 33 figures, submitted to Ap
