    Systematic analyses of the t t clustering effect in He isotopes

    A systematic study on the ground state structure of He isotopes including 10He is presented through a new method developed on the basis of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics AMD , the generator coordinate method GCM , and the stochastic variational method SVM . In this approach, variational calculations are carried out by means of the GCM with the AMD wave functions produced by means of the SVM. A role of the t t cluster component is examined with the present method, allowing the wider configuration space containing simultaneously the t t valence neutrons structure and 4He valence neutrons strucutur

    Patients’ satisfaction with eye care services in a Nigerian Teaching Hospital

    Background: Understanding the patientsf perception of services received is essential as the parameters important to the patient may be quite  different from that to the eye health provider.Aim: This study aims to evaluate patientsf satisfaction with the care received from the pioneer teaching hospital in south.eastern Nigeria and use it to audit services.Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross.sectional study. An interviewer.administered questionnaire was administered to 307 consecutive consenting patients seen at the eye clinic of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Enugu in April 2013. The questionnaire asked questions regarding satisfaction with the time spent in the clinic, attitudeof various categories of staff, physical facilities, cleanliness of the clinic and willingness to come again to the clinic or recommend it to others.Results: The respondents were more satisfied with the attitude of the doctors and nurses than that of revenue and medical records clerks (P = 0.001). Most patients, 288 (93.8%) expressed satisfaction with the overall cleanliness of the eye clinic; 220 (71.7%) and 288 (93.8%) were not satisfied with the toilet facilities and cost of services, respectively. Only 140 (45.6%) participants will recommend the hospital to others strongly, 145 (47.2%) will do so hesitantly.Conclusion: Majority of the patients were satisfied with the services  received. The major dissatisfaction points were cost of services and inadequate toilet facilities.Key words: Developing country, eye care services, patient satisfactio

    937-2 Safety and Efficacy of QW3600 (EchoGen®) in Producing LV Opacification During Stress Echocardiography in Normals

    QW 3600 (EchoGen®) (EG) is a new ultrasonic contrast agent which produces intense LV cavity and even myocardial opacification following IV injection in animals. However, no data exists regarding the potential of this agent to be used in conjunction with stress echo in humans. Therefore, in 17 normals we compared the results of injecting equal volumes of normal saline and progressive doses of EG: 0.02 cc/kg (5 pts). 0.05cc/kg (4). and 0.1cc/kg (8) during stress echo performed to 85% of maximal heart rate. Echo was performed in apical 4 chamber view, and LV contrast opacification was assessed qualitatively (1 + weak and incomplete, 2+ complete cavity. 3+dense and complete) and by videodensitometry (0.3cm2) region of interest in mid cavity. All subjects tolerated the injections well without adverse events. No significant changes were observed in pulse oximetry, the ECG, or 25 laboratory studies. We analyzed the maximal change (Δ) in systolic (S) and diastolic (D) pressure (mmHg) and heart rate (HR) and peak videointensity (PVI) from baseline to post exertion following the injection of either saline or EG (Table, all p=NS for saline vs EG except PVI)DoseSalineEGΔHRΔSBPΔDBPPVIΔHRΔSBPΔDBPPVI0.0248431813424917280.0537351611434321420.13740191037441962LV opacification was absent with saline, was inconsistent at 0.02 and 0.05cc/kg doses, but was≥ 2+ in all but one 0.1cc/kg administration (mean 2.4). Peak LV videointensity after EG was 62 for 0.1cc/kg. Thus, EchoGen® is a new contrast agent which is well tolerated when used with stress echo in normals and results in complete LV opacification at a dose of 0.1cc/kg. EchoGen® should prove to be a useful adjunct to clinical stress echo

    Alterations in the antioxidant status of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus and associated cardiovascular complications

    In view of the high prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus, this study aimed at determining the total plasma antioxidant capacity of type 2 diabetic patients with and without macrovascular complications. The erythrocyte catalase level was also evaluated because of the implication of catalase as a risk factor in diabetes. 90 age-­‐, gender-­‐ and body mass index-­‐matched subjects were used for this study and divided into healthy subjects (Group I, n=30), diabetic patients (Group II, n=30) and diabetic patients with cardiovascular complications (Group III, n=30). Blood samples collected from 90 eligible subjects were analyzed for glucose, HbA1c, urea, creatinine, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL and  LDL cholesterol levels. Blood antioxidant activity and erythrocyte catalase levels were assessed. The mean antioxidant status values of Groups II and III were found to be significantly lower than that of Group I (p < 0.05). A significant decrease was also observed in the mean catalase level of Groups II and III as compared to Group I (p < 0.05) while a significant increase in fasting blood glucose level, glycated hemoglobin, triglycerides and urea was observed in Groups II and III compared to Group I. These data suggest that the in vivo antioxidant defense was highly compromised in patients with diabetes and associated cardiovascular complications although they were on medication, thereby suggesting the potential contributory beneficial effects of exogenous antioxidants. Furthermore, a reduction in catalase level may suggest the role of increasing hydrogen peroxide concentration in the disease progression.KEY WORDS: Antioxidant; Erythrocyte catalase; Cardiovascular complications; Type 2 diabetes mellitu

    Nanosatellites for quantum science and technology

    Bringing quantum science and technology to the space frontier offers exciting prospects for both fundamental physics and applications such as long-range secure communication and space-borne quantum probes for inertial sensing with enhanced accuracy and sensitivity. But despite important terrestrial pathfinding precursors on common microgravity platforms and promising proposals to exploit the significant advantages of space quantum missions, large-scale quantum testbeds in space are yet to be realized due to the high costs and leadtimes of traditional “Big Space” satellite development. But the “small space” revolution, spearheaded by the rise of nanosatellites such as CubeSats, is an opportunity to greatly accelerate the progress of quantum space missions by providing easy and affordable access to space and encouraging agile development. We review space quantum science and technology, CubeSats and their rapidly developing capabilities, and how they can be used to advance quantum satellite systems

    Synthesis of Nanostructured Catalysts by Surfactant-Templating of Large-Pore Zeolites

    Zeolites and related crystalline molecular sieves are utilised in a wide range of reactions and processes due to their regular microporous structure, strong acidity, shape selectivity and ion-exchange properties. However, their practical applications can be limited by the small size of the channels and cavities of the microporous structures, and therefore, a great deal of effort have been devoted to enhancing the transport of large-sized molecules in the host pores. Several commercially available zeolites, including faujasite (FAU), mordenite (MOR), beta (BEA), ZSM-5 (MFI) and zeolite L (LTL) have been exposed to a variety of acid and base treatments in the presence of a surfactant (cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, CTAB), which led to the controlled introduction of intracrystalline mesoporosity. A detailed characterisation of the obtained mesostructured zeolites has been carried out using FTIR spectroscopy, high resolution TEM, XRD, N2 adsorption, 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR. This work demonstrates a successful application of the supramolecular templating approach for generating tuneable mesoporosity in a range of zeolites possessing 12-membered ring channels, which has been applied to zeolite L for the first time, thus producing hierarchical meso-microporous materials with improved accessibility of active sites and enhanced catalytic performance in dealkylation of tri-isopropylbenzene

    Enzymatic synthesis of Medium- and Long-Chain Triacylglycerols (MLCT): Optimization of process parameters using response surface methodology.

    The main objective of this study was to understand the effects and relationship amongst four factors, which are reaction temperature, reaction time, enzyme load, and substrate mole ratio with the purpose of producing healthy functional cooking oil for long-term dietary treatment. Lipozyme RM IM lipase-catalyzed esterification of medium- and long-chain triacylglycerols (MLCT) from glycerol and mixtures of capric and oleic acid was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) with a five-level, four-factorial design. Reaction temperature, reaction time, and substrate mole ratio strongly affected MLCT synthesis (P  0.01) effect on MLCT yield. Comparison between predicted and experimental value from central composite rotatable design optimization procedures revealed good correlation, implying that the reduced cubic polynomial model with backward elimination statistically expressed the percent MLCT yield obtained. The optimum MLCT yield was 59.76% by using 10 wt% enzyme load, reaction temperature of 70°C, reaction time of 14 h, and substrate mole ratio of 3.5:1. Experiments to confirm the predicted results using the optimal parameters showed an MLCT yield of 56.35% (n = 2). The choice on the types of fatty acids used in MLCT optimization work greatly influenced the physical and chemical properties of MLCT oil produced. The refined MLCT oil characteristics study showed this oil is suitable to be used for cooking/frying purposes as a high-value added product
