    Memorials of Queen Elizabeth I in early Stuart London

    At least thirty–eight memorials were erected to Elizabeth I in London parish churches between c. 1606 and c.1633. Though they have been interpreted as critiques of Jacobean foreign policy, this conclusion is not fully supported by extant evidence regarding when the memorials were commissioned, the parishes in which they were erected, and the inscriptions which they contained. This article suggests that, as commentaries on foreign policy, the memorials were directed more at Charles than James, and could have been designed or interpreted as criticism of Charles's and Buckingham's continental failures or an endorsement of their more militant response to continental events. Further analysis of the memorials' inscriptions and of parochial observance of royal anniversaries indicates a further range of motives, purposes and contemporary interpretations including the commemoration of key events in the Church of England's history, daily reminders to parishioners to thank God for his protection, and the memorialisation of patrons and their familie

    Design Patterns for Silent Player Characters in Narrative-Driven Games

    The silent player character (SPC) is a reoccurring but vaguely understood type of player character in narrative-driven games. In this project, we present our findings from an analysis of SPC development in popular narrative games. We identify two main types of SPCs: expressive and projective characters. Based on a survey of related games, we synthesized a list of methods designers can use to effectively communicate a SPC's story. Then, we create a short narrative experience, featuring an expressive SPC, that is tested by players for story and character interpretation. Our results conclude that the design patterns developed within this study, used to communicate an expressive SPC, were largely successful in developing a pre-defined SPC who players were able to interpret as a character.     Upstream-binding factor is sequestered into herpes simplex virus type 1 replication compartments

    Previous reports have shown that adenovirus recruits nucleolar protein upstream-binding factor (UBF) into adenovirus DNA replication centres. Here, we report that despite having a different mode of viral DNA replication, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) also recruits UBF into viral DNA replication centres. Moreover, as with adenovirus, enhanced green fluorescent protein-tagged fusion proteins of UBF inhibit viral DNA replication. We propose that UBF is recruited to the replication compartments to aid replication of HSV-1 DNA. In addition, this is a further example of the role of nucleolar components in viral life cycle

    Surface Modification of Polyethylene with Multi-End-Functional Polyethylene Additives

    We have prepared and characterized a series of multifluorocarbon end-functional polyethylene additives, which when blended with polyethylene matrices increase surface hydrophobicity and lipophobicity. Water contact angles of >112° were observed on spin-cast blended film surfaces containing less than 1% fluorocarbon in the bulk, compared to 98° in the absence of any additive. Crystallinity in these films gives rise to surface roughness that is an order of magnitude greater than is typical for amorphous spin-cast films but is too little to give rise to superhydrophobicity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the enrichment of the multifluorocarbon additives at the air surface by up to 80 times the bulk concentration. Ion beam analysis was used to quantify the surface excess of the additives as a function of composition, functionality, and molecular weight of either blend component. In some cases, an excess of the additives was also found at the substrate interface, indicating phase separation into self-stratified layers. The combination of neutron reflectometry and ion beam analysis allowed the surface excess to be quantified above and below the melting point of the blended films. In these films, where the melting temperatures of the additive and matrix components are relatively similar (within 15 °C), the surface excess is almost independent of whether the blended film is semicrystalline or molten, suggesting that the additive undergoes cocrystallization with the matrix when the blended films are allowed to cool below the melting point

LEC may have malignant potential. Here, we describe a case of LEC of the pancreas - initially suspected to be a mucinous cyst neoplasm - in an elderly man presenting with abdominal pain, who went on to have a distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy. We also review the relevant literature and discuss implications for the diagnosis and management of this rare lesion

Introduction Simulation-based, multiprofessional team training (SBMPTT) is used widely in healthcare, with evidence that it can improve clinical outcomes and be associated with a positive safety culture. Our aim was to explore the impact of introducing this type of training to a gynaecological team. Methods In this interrupted time-series study, 'Safety Attitudes Questionnaire' (SAQ) data was collected both before and after SBMPTT was introduced to a gynaecological team. Results Low baseline SAQ scores coincided with difficulty in establishing the training, meaning that at the end of our study period only a small proportion of staff had actually attended a training session. Despite trends towards improvement in scores for safety climate, teamwork climate and job satisfaction, no statistically significant difference was observed. There was however an improved perception of the level of collaboration between nursing staff and doctors after the introduction of training. Conclusions and Discussion In this paper we explore a hypothesis that low baseline SAQ scores may highlight that the multiprofessional teams most in need of training work in environments where it is more challenging to implement. There is evidence from other specialties that multiprofessional team training works, now we need to understand how to address the barriers to getting it started. In this paper we suggest how the SAQ could be used as a directive tool for improvement; using the detailed analysis of the local safety culture it provides to both inform future training design and also provide management with an objective marker of progress

    Quaternary geology of the Northern Great Plains

    The Great Plains physiographic province lies east of the Rocky Mountains and extends from southern Alberta and Saskatchewan nearly to the United States-Mexico border. This chapter covers only the northern part of the unglaciated portion of this huge region, from Oklahoma almost to the United StatesCanada border, a portion that herein will be referred to simply as the Northern Great Plains (Fig. 1). This region is in the rain shadow of the Rocky Mountains. Isoheyets are roughly longitudinal, and mean annual precipitation decreases from about 750 mm at the southeastern margin to less than 380 mm in the western and northern parts (Fig. 2). Winters typically are cold with relatively little precipitation, mostly as snow; summers are hot with increased precipitation, chiefly associated with movement of Pacific and Arctic air masses into warm, humid air masses from the Gulf of Mexico. Vegetation is almost wholly prairie grassland, due to the semiarid, markedly seasonal climate. The Northern Great Plains is a large region of generally low relief sloping eastward from the Rocky Mountains toward the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Its basic bedrock structure is a broad syncline, punctuated by the Black Hills and a few smaller uplifts, and by structural basins such as the Williston, Powder River, and Denver-Julesburg Basins (Fig. 3). Its surface bedrock is chiefly Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments, with small areas of older rocks in the Black Hills, central Montana, and eastern parts of Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. During the Laramide orogeny (latest Cretaceous through Eocene), while the Rocky Mountains and Black Hills were rising, synorogenic sediments (frequently with large amounts of volcanic ash from volcanic centers in the Rocky Mountains) were deposited in the subsiding Denver-Julesburg, Powder River, and other basins. From Oligocene to Miocene time, sedimentation generally slowed with declining tectonism and volcanism in the Rocky Mountains. However, since the later Miocene, epeirogenic uplift, probably associated with the East Pacific Rise, affected the Great Plains and particularly the Rocky Mountains. During the last 10 m.y. the Rocky Mountain front has risen 1.5 to 2 km, and the eastern margin of the Great Plains 100 to 500 m (Gable and Hatton, 1983), with half to one-quarter of these amounts during the last 5 m.y. Thus, during the later Miocene the Great Plains became a huge aggrading piedmont sloping gently eastward from the Rocky Mountains and Black Hills, with generally eastward drainage, on which the Ogallala Formation and equivalents was deposited. The Ogallala underlies the High Plains Surface, the highest and oldest geomorphic surface preserved in this region. It has been completely eroded along some parts of the western margin of the region (e.g., the Colorado Piedmont), but eastward, it (and its equivalents, such as the Flaxville gravels in Montana) locally is preserved as caprock or buried by Quaternary sediments (Alden, 1924, 1932; Howard, 1960; Stanley, 1971, 1976; Pearl, 1971; Scott, 1982; Corner and Diffendal, 1983; Diffendal and Corner, 1984; Swinehart and others, 1985; Aber, 1985). During the Pliocene, regional aggradation slowly changed to dissection by the principal rivers. In the western part of the region the rivers flowed eastward, but the continental drainage divide Figure 3. The ancestral upper Missouri, Little Missouri, Yellowstone, and Cheyenne Rivers drained northeast to Hudson Bay, whereas the ancestral White, Platte, and Arkansas Rivers went to the Gulf of Mexico (Fig 4A). Their courses are marked by scattered surface and subsurface gravel remnants; in Montana and North Dakota, deposits of the preglacial Missouri River and its tributaries are buried deeply beneath glacial and other sediments (Howard, 1960; Bluemle, 1972)

    Drying affects the fiber network in low molecular weight hydrogels

    Low molecular weight gels are formed by the self-assembly of a suitable small molecule gelator into a three-dimensional network of fibrous structures. The gel properties are determined by the fiber structures, the number and type of cross-links and the distribution of the fibers and cross-links in space. Probing these structures and cross-links is difficult. Many reports rely on microscopy of dried gels (xerogels), where the solvent is removed prior to imaging. The assumption is made that this has little effect on the structures, but it is not clear that this assumption is always (or ever) valid. Here, we use small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to probe low molecular weight hydrogels formed by the self-assembly of dipeptides. We compare scattering data for wet and dried gels, as well as following the drying process. We show that the assumption that drying does not affect the network is not always correct

    Liver Graft Revascularization by Donor Portal Vein Arterialization Following “No Touch” Donor Hepatectomy

    Unsatisfactory immediate function of the transplanted liver together with technical complications contribute to a persisting early mortality for hepatic transplantation in the 20% range. We report our initial clinical experience with methods, one not previously used clinically, that resulted in uniformly well-functioning liver grafts in 11 patients and contributed to a satisfactory success rate for the procedure. Donors were heart-beating. During the donor operation all manipulations of the liver were avoided until after cold preservation, achieved by external cooling at the same time as circulatory interruption, donor exsanguination and perfusion of the liver with cold oxygenated fluid of “extracellular̵ type. The organs were then gently dissected. At transplantation the livers were revascularized with arterial blood shunted from the recipient iliac artery to the graft portal vein after completion of the suprahepatic IVC anastomosis. The infrahepatic IVCs and hepatic arteries were then joined, the iliac artery shunts discontinued and the portal veins joined. Total ischaemic intervals for the allografts were 3½–8 (average 5). Anhepatic intervals were 1–2¼ (average 2). The arterio-portal shunts were operating for 18–85 (mean 46) min. Blood loss and haemodynamic, acid-base and electrolyte abnormalities at revascularization were minimal. All grafts secreted bile immediately and all parameters reflected continuing improvement of liver function thereafter. Nine patients (82%) are alive between 4 and 18 (mean 11) months after transplantation. We conclude that these methods offer effective avoidance of serious organ damage during donor hepatectomy and preservation, reduced allograft ischaemic interval and reduced recipient anhepatic time. They result in avoidance of blood loss at the time of revascularization, together with minimal haemodynamic, acid-base or biochemical changes. In addition, they allow the surgeon to perform and test all anastomoses without time constraints, provide the capability to deal with unexpected complications, and assure good early graft function
