Having drawn tentative inferences regarding the roles of these, we offer a selective review of what appear to us to be the most memorable national representations. These in turn suggest a paradoxical benefit which an awareness of localised histories may bring to artistic production

    Mapping Cluster Mass Distributions via Gravitational Lensing of Background Galaxies

    We present a new method for measuring the projected mass distributions of galaxy clusters. The gravitational amplification is measured by comparing the joint distribution in redshift and magnitude of galaxies behind the cluster with that of field galaxies. We show that the total amplification is directly related to the surface mass density in the weak field limit, and so it is possible to map the mass distribution of the cluster. The method is shown to be limited by discreteness noise and galaxy clustering behind the lens. Galaxy clustering sets a lower limit to the error along the redshift direction, but a clustering independent lensing signature may be obtained from the magnitude distribution at fixed redshift. Statistical techniques are developed for estimating the surface mass density of the cluster. We extend these methods to account for any obscuration by cluster halo dust, which may be mapped independently of the dark matter. We apply the method to a series of numerical simulations and show the feasibility of the approach.     Two-loop two-point functions with masses: asymptotic expansions and Taylor series, in any dimension

    In all mass cases needed for quark and gluon self-energies, the two-loop master diagram is expanded at large and small q2q^2, in dd dimensions, using identities derived from integration by parts. Expansions are given, in terms of hypergeometric series, for all gluon diagrams and for all but one of the quark diagrams; expansions of the latter are obtained from differential equations. Pad\'{e} approximants to truncations of the expansions are shown to be of great utility. As an application, we obtain the two-loop photon self-energy, for all dd, and achieve highly accelerated convergence of its expansions in powers of q2/m2q^2/m^2 or m2/q2m^2/q^2, for d=4d=4.Comment: 25 pages, OUT--4102--43, BI--TP/92--5

    Non-parametric mass reconstruction of A1689 from strong lensing data with SLAP

    We present the mass distribution in the central area of the cluster A1689 by fitting over 100 multiply lensed images with the non-parametric Strong Lensing Analysis Package (SLAP, Diego et al. 2004). The surface mass distribution is obtained in a robust way finding a total mass of 0.25E15 M_sun/h within a 70'' circle radius from the central peak. Our reconstructed density profile fits well an NFW profile with small perturbations due to substructure and is compatible with the more model dependent analysis of Broadhurst et al. (2004a) based on the same data. Our estimated mass does not rely on any prior information about the distribution of dark matter in the cluster. The peak of the mass distribution falls very close to the central cD and there is substructure near the center suggesting that the cluster is not fully relaxed. We also examine the effect on the recovered mass when we include the uncertainties in the redshift of the sources and in the original shape of the sources. Using simulations designed to mimic the data, we identify some biases in our reconstructed mass distribution. We find that the recovered mass is biased toward lower masses beyond 1 arcmin (150 kpc) from the central cD and that in the very center we may be affected by degeneracy problems. On the other hand, we confirm that the reconstructed mass between 25'' and 70'' is a robust, unbiased estimate of the true mass distribution and is compatible with an NFW profile.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures.     A faint galaxy redshift survey to B=24

    Using the multislit LDSS-2 spectrograph on the {\it William Herschel Telescope} we have completed a redshift survey in the magnitude range 22.5<B<2422.5<B< 24 which has produced 73 redshifts representing a 73\% complete sample uniformly-selected from four deep fields at high Galactic latitude. The survey extends out to z>1z>1 and includes the highest redshift galaxy (z=1.108z=1.108) yet discovered in a field sample. The median redshift, \zmed=0.46, and form of the redshift distribution constitute compelling evidence against simple luminosity evolution as an explanation of the large excess of faint galaxies (×\simeq\times2--4 no-evolution) seen in this magnitude range. Rather we identify the excess population as blue objects with z0.4z\sim 0.4 and BB\, luminosities similar to local LL^* galaxies indicating a dramatic decrease in the density of such objects over the last Hubble time, confirming the trends found in brighter redshift surveys. We also find a marked absence of {\it very} low redshift galaxies (z<z<0.1) at faint limits, severely constraining any significant steepening of the local field galaxy luminosity function at low luminosities.Comment: uuencoded compressed postscript.     A Free-Form Lensing Grid Solution for A1689 with New Mutiple Images

    Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the galaxy cluster Abell 1689 has revealed an exceptional number of strongly lensed multiply-imaged galaxies, including high-redshift candidates. Previous studies have used this data to obtain the most detailed dark matter reconstructions of any galaxy cluster to date, resolving substructures ~25 kpc across. We examine Abell 1689 (hereafter, A1689) non-parametrically, combining strongly lensed images and weak distortions from wider field Subaru imaging, and we incorporate member galaxies to improve the lens solution. Strongly lensed galaxies are often locally affected by member galaxies, however, these perturbations cannot be recovered in grid based reconstructions because the lensing information is too sparse to resolve member galaxies. By adding luminosity-scaled member galaxy deflections to our smooth grid we can derive meaningful solutions with sufficient accuracy to permit the identification of our own strongly lensed images, so our model becomes self consistent. We identify 11 new multiply lensed system candidates and clarify previously ambiguous cases, in the deepest optical and NIR data to date from Hubble and Subaru. Our improved spatial resolution brings up new features not seen when the weak and strong lensing effects are used separately, including clumps and filamentary dark matter around the main halo. Our treatment means we can obtain an objective mass ratio between the cluster and galaxy components, for examining the extent of tidal stripping of the luminous member galaxies. We find a typical mass-to-light ratios of M/L_B = 21 inside the r<1 arcminute region that drops to M/L_B = 17 inside the r<40 arcsecond region. Our model independence means we can objectively evaluate the competitiveness of stacking cluster lenses for defining the geometric lensing-distance-redshift relation in a model independent way.Comment: 23 pages with 25 figures Replced with MNRAS submitted version.     We present a set of scalar master integrals (MIs) needed for a complete treatment of massive two-loop corrections to Bhabha scattering in QED, including integrals with arbitrary fermionic loops. The status of analytical solutions for the MIs is reviewed and examples of some methods to solve MIs analytically are worked out in more detail.     Higher loop corrections to a Schwinger--Dyson equation

    We consider the effects of higherloop corrections to a Schwinger--Dyson equations for propagators. This is made possible by the efficiency of the methods we developed in preceding works, still using the supersymmetric Wess--Zumino model as a laboratory. We obtain the dominant contributions of the three and four loop primitive divergences at high order in perturbation theory, without the need for their full evaluations. Our main conclusion is that the asymptotic behavior of the perturbative series of the renormalization function remains unchanged, and we conjecture that this will remain the case for all finite order corrections.Comment: 12 pages, 2 imbedded TiKZ pictures.
