    High efficiency thermionic converter studies

    The objective is to improve thermionic converter performance by means of reduced interelectrode losses, greater emitter capabilities, and lower collector work functions until the converter performance level is suitable for out-of-core space reactors and radioisotope generators. Electrode screening experiments have identified several promising collector materials. Back emission work function measurements of a ZnO collector in a thermionic diode have given values less than 1.3 eV. Diode tests were conducted over the range of temperatures of interest for space power applications. Enhanced mode converter experiments have included triodes operated in both the surface ionization and plasmatron modes. Pulsed triodes were studied as a function of pulse length, pulse potential, inert gas fill pressure, cesium pressure, spacing, emitter temperature and collector temperature. Current amplifications (i.e., mean output current/mean grid current) of several hundred were observed up to output current densities of one amp/sq cm. These data correspond to an equivalent arc drop less than 0.1 eV

The polarization parameter, CP asymmetry and decay width are calculated.     Research in thermionic energy conversion technology is reported. The objectives were to produce converters suitable for use in out of core space reactors, radioisotope generators, and solar satellites. The development of emitter electrodes that operate at low cesium pressure, stable low work function collector electrodes, and more efficient means of space charge neutralization were investigated to improve thermionic converter performance. Potential improvements in collector properties were noted with evaporated thin film barium oxide coatings. Experiments with cesium carbonate suggest this substance may provide optimum combinations of cesium and oxygen for thermionic conversion

    The remittances behaviour of the second generation in Europe: altruism or self-interest?

    Whereas most research on remittances focuses on first-generation migrants, the aim of this paper is to investigate the remitting behaviour of the host country-born children of migrants - the second generation - in various European cities. Some important studies found that migrant transnationalism is not only a phenomenon for the first generation, but also apply to the second and higher generations, through, among other things, family visits, elder care, and remittances. At the same time, the maintenance of a strong ethnic identity in the ‘host’ society does not necessarily mean that second-generation migrants have strong transnational ties to their ‘home’ country. The data used in this paper is from “The Integration of the European Second Generation” (TIES) project. The survey collected information on approximately 6,250 individuals aged 18-35 with at least one migrant parent from Morocco, Turkey or former Yugoslavia, in 15 European cities, regrouped in 8 ‘countries’. For the purpose of this paper, only analyses for Austria (Linz and Vienna); Switzerland (Basle and Zurich); Germany (Berlin and Frankfurt); France (Paris and Strasbourg); the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Rotterdam); Spain (Barcelona and Madrid); and Sweden (Stockholm) will be presented.

    Quenched lattice calculation of the vector channel B --> D* l nu decay rate

    We calculate, in the continuum limit of quenched lattice QCD, the form factor that enters the decay rate of the semileptonic decay B --> D* l nu. By using the step scaling method (SSM), previously introduced to handle two scale problems in lattice QCD, and by adopting flavor twisted boundary conditions we extract F(w) at finite momentum transfer and at the physical values of the heavy quark masses. Our results can be used in order to extract the CKM matrix element Vcb by the experimental decay rate without model dependent extrapolations. The value of Vcb agrees with the one obtained from the B --> D l nu channel and makes us confident that the quenched approximation well applies to these transitions.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Hadronic decays of eta and eta-prime with coupled channels

    The hadronic decays eta -> pi pi pi, eta-prime -> pi pi pi and eta-prime -> eta pi pi are investigated within a U(3) chiral unitary approach. Final state interactions are included by deriving the effective s-wave potentials for meson meson scattering from the chiral effective Lagrangian and iterating them in a Bethe-Salpeter equation. With only a small set of parameters we are able to explain both rates and spectral shapes of these decays.Comment: 23 page

    Perturbative QCD analysis of BϕKB \to \phi K^* decays

    We study the first observed charmless BVVB\to VV modes, the BϕKB\to\phi K^* decays, in perturbative QCD formalism. The obtained branching ratios B(BϕK)15×106B(B\to\phi K^*)\sim 15 \times 10^{-6} are larger than 9×106\sim 9\times 10^{-6} from QCD factorization. The comparison of the predicted magnitudes and phases of the different helicity amplitudes, and branching ratios with experimental data can test the power counting rules, the evaluation of annihilation contributions, and the mechanism of dynamical penguin enhancement in perturbative QCD, respectively.Comment: 14 pages, 2 tables, brief disscussion on hard sacle added, version to appear in PR

    Evaluation of MOSFETs for entrance dose dosimetry for 6 and 10 MV photons with a custom made build up cap

The dcoument attached has been archived with permission from the publisher.Commercially available MOSFETs, Thomson and Nielsen TN502-RD, were evaluated for suitability as an entrance dose in vivo dosimeter for 6MV and 10MV. Detector response was normally distributed around a mean (skewness=-0.01±0.24, kurtosis=-0.09±0.48) with a mean of 110.6 mV/Gy, with a standard deviation of 2.4% at 0.86 Gy. The standard deviation of readings increased with decreasing dose and increased at a rate greater than inverse square. The linearity coefficient was 0.9999. No significant dependence on angle, field size, dose rate, energy or time was observed. As such, they would be useful for entrance dose in vivo dosimetry. With a custom made build up cap corrections were required for field size, wedge, beam energy and tray factors, showing that build up cap design is an important consideration for entrance dose in vivo dosimetry using MOSFETs.J.     Semileptonic B decays into even parity charmed mesons

    By using a constituent quark model we compute the form factors relevant to semileptonic transitions of B mesons into low-lying p-wave charmed mesons. We evaluate the q^2 dependence of these form factors and compare them with other model calculations. The Isgur-Wise functions tau(1/2) and tau(3/2) are also obtained in the heavy quark limit of our results.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

    Sexual exploitation in children: Nature, prevalence and distinguishing characteristics reported in young adulthood

    The aim of this study was to explore the nature and extent of sexual exploitation in a university student sample, whilst being clear that sexual exploitation is sexual abuse. Overall, 47% of participants (96 out of 204) reported having been approached by an adult in a sexual manner when they were under the age of 16. The study predicted that a number of individual characteristics would increase a young person’s vulnerability for sexual exploitation. These included low self-esteem, external locus of control, social loneliness and insecure attachment. Results indicated lower levels of self-esteem among those who had been approached sexually, although it is not clear in terms of causality. There were no differences in scores for locus of control or loneliness. Relationship anxiety was significantly linked with children having engaged in sexual behaviours with an adult. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of emerging individual characteristics relating to a risk of sexual exploitation
