Quantum Monte Carlo calculation of the zero-temperature phase diagram of the two-component fermionic hard-core gas in two dimensions
Motivated by potential realizations in cold-atom or cold-molecule systems, we have performed quantum Monte Carlo simulations of two-component gases of fermions in two dimensions with hard-core interactions. We have determined the gross features of the zero-temperature phase diagram by investigating the relative stabilities of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic fluids and crystals. We have also examined the effect of including a pairwise, long-range r^3 potential between the particles. Our most important conclusion is that there is no region of stability for a ferromagnetic fluid phase, even if the long-range interaction is present. We also present results for the pair-correlation function, static structure factor, and momentum density of two-dimensional hard-core fluids
Superconducting Properties under Magnetic Field in NaCoOHO Single Crystal
We report the in-plane resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of the layered
cobalt oxide NaCoOHO single crystal. The
temperature dependence of the resistivity shows metallic behavior from room
temperature to the superconducting transition temperature of 4.5 K.
Sharp resistive transition, zero resistivity and almost perfect superconducting
volume fraction below indicate the good quality and the bulk
superconductivity of the single crystal. The upper critical field and
the coherence length are obtained from the resistive transitions in
magnetic field parallel to the c-axis and the -plane. The anisotropy of
, 12 nm/1.3 nm 9.2, suggests that this
material is considered to be an anisotropic three dimensional superconductor.
In the field parallel to the -plane, seems to be suppressed to the
value of Pauli paramagnetic limit. It may indicate the spin singlet
superconductivity in the cobalt oxide.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Mean transport and seasonal cycle of the Kuroshio east of Taiwan with comparison to the Florida Current
Moored observations of Kuroshio current structure and transport variability were made across the channel between northeast Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands at 24 degreesN from September 19, 1994, to May 27, 1996. This was a cooperative, effort between the United States and Taiwan. The moored array was designated PCM-1, for the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) transport resolving array. The dominant current and transport variability occurred on 100-day timescales and is shown by Zhang et al. [2001] to be caused by warm mesoscale eddys merging with the Kuroshio south of the array causing offshore meandering and flow splitting around the Ryukyu Islands. An annual transport cycle could not be resolved from our 20-month moored record because of abasing from the 100-day period events. Sea level difference data were used to extend the transport time series to 7 years giving a variation in the range of the annual transport cycle of 4-10 Sv, with a mean range closer to 4 Sv. The seasonal maximum of 24 Sv occurred in the summer and the seasonal minimum of 20 Sv occurred in the fall. A weaker secondary maximum also occurred in the winter. The cycle of Kuroshio transport appears to result from a combination of local along-channel wind forcing and Sverdrup forcing over the Philippine Sea. Our estimate of the mean transport of the Kuroshio at the entrance to the East China Sea from the moored array is 21.5 +/- 2.5 Sv. The mean transpacific balance of meridional flows forced by winds and thermohaline processes at this latitude requires an additional mean northward flow of 12 Sv with an annual cycle of +/-8 Sv along the eastern boundary of the Ryukyu Islands. The mean transport and annual cycle of the Kuroshio were found to be in reasonable agreement with basin-scale wind-forced models. Remarkable similarities are shown to exist between the mean western boundary currents and their seasonal cycles in the Atlantic (Florida Current and Antilles Current) and Pacific (Kuroshio and boundary current east of Ryukyu Island chain) at the same latitude. However, detailed comparison shows that the mean Kuroshio is weaker and more surface intensified than the mean Florida Current, while the Kuroshio-transport variability is significantly larger

The Aarhus code is the result of a long development, starting in 1974, and
still ongoing. A novel feature is the integration of the computation of
adiabatic oscillations for specified models as part of the code. It offers
substantial flexibility in terms of microphysics and has been carefully tested
for the computation of solar models. However, considerable development is still
required in the treatment of nuclear reactions, diffusion and convective

Low temperature electronic properties of Sr_2RuO_4 II: Superconductivity
The body centered tetragonal structure of Sr_2RuO_4 gives rise to umklapp
scattering enhanced inter-plane pair correlations in the d_{yz} and d_{zx}
orbitals. Based on symmetry arguments, Hund's rule coupling, and a bosonized
description of the in-plane electron correlations the superconducting order
parameter is found to be a orbital-singlet spin-triplet with two spatial
components. The spatial anisotropy is 7%. The different components of the order
parameter give rise to two-dimensional gapless fluctuations. The phase
transition is of third order. The temperature dependence of the pair density,
specific heat, NQR, Knight shift, and susceptibility are in agreement with

Carbon Nanotube Terahertz Polarizer
We describe a film of highly-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes that acts
as an excellent terahertz linear polarizer. There is virtually no attenuation
(strong absorption) when the terahertz polarization is perpendicular (parallel)
to the nanotube axis. From the data we calculated the reduced linear dichrosim
to be 3, corresponding to a nematic order parameter of 1, which demonstrates
nearly perfect alignment as well as intrinsically anisotropic terahertz
response of single-walled carbon nanotubes in the film.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

Optical response of finite-length carbon nanotubes
Optical response of finite-length metallic carbon nanotubes is calculated
including effects of induced edge charges in a self-consistent manner. The
results show that the main resonance corresponding to excitation of the
fundamental plasmon mode with wave vector with being the tube
length is quite robust and unaffected. This arises because the strong electric
field associated with edge charges is screened and decays rapidly inside the
nanotube. For higher-frequency resonances, the field starts to be mixed and

Physical fitness, fatigue, and quality of life after liver transplantation
Fatigue is often experienced after liver transplantation. The aims of this cross-sectional study were to assess physical fitness (cardiorespiratory fitness, neuromuscular fitness, body composition) in liver transplant recipients and to explore whether physical fitness is related to severity of fatigue. In addition, we explored the relationship between physical fitness and health-related quality of life. Included were 18 patients 1–5 years after transplantation (aged 48.0 ± 11.8 years) with varying severity of fatigue. Peak oxygen uptake during cycle ergometry, 6-min walk distance, isokinetic muscle strength of the knee extensors, body mass index, waist circumference, skinfold thickness, severity of fatigue, and health-related quality of life were measured. Cardiorespiratory fitness in the liver transplant recipients was on average 16–34% lower than normative values (P ≤ 0.05). Furthermore, the prevalence of obesity seemed to be higher than in the general population (17 vs. 10%). We found no deficit in neuromuscular fitness. Cardiorespiratory fitness was the only fitness component that was related with severity of fatigue (rs = −0.61 to rs = -0.50, P ≤ 0.05). Particularly cardiorespiratory fitness was related with several aspects of health-related quality of life (rs = 0.48 to rs = 0.70, P ≤ 0.05). Results of our study imply that cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition are impaired in liver transplant recipients and that fitness is related with severity of fatigue (only cardiorespiratory fitness) and quality of life (particularly cardiorespiratory fitness) in this group. These findings have implications for the development of rehabilitation programs for liver transplant recipients
Isoprene nitrates drive new particle formation in Amazon’s upper troposphere
New particle formation (NPF) in the tropical upper troposphere is a globally important source of atmospheric aerosols1-4. It is known to occur over the Amazon basin, but the nucleation mechanism and chemical precursors have yet to be identified2. Here we present comprehensive in situ aircraft measurements showing that extremely low-volatile oxidation products of isoprene, particularly certain organonitrates, drive NPF in the Amazonian upper troposphere. The organonitrates originate from OH-initiated oxidation of isoprene from forest emissions in the presence of nitrogen oxides from lightning. Nucleation bursts start about 2 h after sunrise in the outflow of nocturnal deep convection, producing high aerosol concentrations of more than 50,000 particles cm-3. We report measurements of characteristic diurnal cycles of precursor gases and particles. Our observations show that the interplay between biogenic isoprene, deep tropical convection with associated lightning, oxidation photochemistry and the low ambient temperature uniquely promotes NPF. The particles grow over time, undergo long-range transport and descend through subsidence to the lower troposphere, in which they can serve as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) that influence the Earth's hydrological cycle, radiation budget and climate1,4-8
