Body and diet as sales pitches: Spanish teenagers’ perceptions about influencers’ impact on ideal physical appearance

    Get PDF
This project sits at the intersection of three axes: (a) influencers as the increasing focus of minors’ attention and trust online, (b) sponsored content about eating habits and physical appearance produced by these influencers, and (c) minors’ ability to discern and identify the persuasive intent of said content. The usefulness of analyzing the interplay of these three axes lies in the impact that consumption of this content has on minors’ self-esteem and on the adoption of certain habits that can directly impact their personal well-being. For this reason, this project seeks to provide insight into the social imaginary that influencers’ sponsored speech creates in minors regarding their physical appearance. To this end, a qualitative study with 12 focus groups of minors aged 11–17 years of age who reside in Spain was proposed. Notable among the key results was that the interviewees recognize that they primarily receive commercial messages about food and products related to physical appearance, such as makeup or clothing, from influencers; likewise, they are aware of persuasive tactics used on social networks, such as the construction of a perfect, aspirational world, which minors absorb and accept as part of the digital environment and end up incorporating into their behavior on social networks. This research aims to help demonstrate that teaching critical thinking is a long-term cultural investment that would make the citizens of tomorrow aware, engaged, and active

Due to the chronic nature of the disease, type II Diabetes mellitus (DM2) can affect the quality of life and perception of health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of life, perception of health, and level of physical activity in type II diabetics in December 2021. A descriptive, analytical cross-sectional design study, which included 116 volunteers with DM2 through an online survey where sociodemographic data, quality of life according to the EuroQoL-5D, health perception according to a visual analog scale, and level of physical activity according to the international IPAQ questionnaire. The study was approved by the Scientific and Ethics Committee of the Paraguayan Association of Graduates in Nutrition (code number 128/2021). The average age was 51.9 years, 63.8 were female, 79.3% resided in Asunción and the Metropolitan Area, and 39.5% had a secondary education level. 94% continued treatment, hypertension being the most frequent comorbidity. The quality of life showed 38% with moderate depression and/or anxiety. The quality-of-life index was 0,62±0.12 and the perception of health was 65.3±17.6. The predominant level of physical activity was low (45%). When comparing the quality-of-life index and the perception of health according to the level of physical activity, it was found that these variables showed better scores in those who perform moderate to high physical activity. The level of physical activity is a determinant of health-related quality of life, the greater the intensity of physical activity, the better the quality and perception of health indices in diabetics patients

The consolidation of projects within the university itself, the way the projects compliment in the education of university students, the continued demand from students for these projects and their generous response in terms of time, commitment and rescheduling of study time

Can Parietin Transfer Energy Radiatively to Photosynthetic Pigments?

The main role of lichen anthraquinones is in protection against biotic and abiotic stresses, such as UV radiation. These compounds are frequently deposited as crystals outside the fungal hyphae and most of them emit visible fluorescence when excited by UV. We wondered whether the conversion of UV into visible fluorescence might be photosynthetically used by the photobiont, thereby converting UV into useful energy. To address this question, thalli of Xanthoria parietina were used as a model system. In this species the anthraquinone parietin accumulates in the outer upper cortex, conferring the species its characteristic yellow-orange colouration. In ethanol, parietin absorbed strongly in the blue and UV-B and emitted fluorescence in the range 480-540 nm, which partially matches with the absorption spectra of photosynthetic pigments. In intact thalli, it was determined by confocal microscopy that fluorescence emission spectra shifted 90 nm towards longer wavelengths. Then, to study energy transfer from parietin, we compared the response to UV of untreated and parietin-free thalli (removed with acetone). A chlorophyll fluorescence kinetic assessment provided evidence of UV-induced electron transport, though independently of the presence of parietin. Thus, a role for anthraquinones in energy harvesting is not supported for X. parietina under presented experimental conditions. This research was funded by the Basque Government, grant number [UPV/EHU-GV IT-1018-16], and by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) and the European Research and Development Foundation (FEDER), grant number [CTM2014-53902-C2-2-P]

Foraminíferos bentónicos como indicador ambiental en arrecifes coralinos de un sector noroccidental de Cuba

    Get PDF

14 páginas, 4 tablas, 3 figurasA comparative analysis of the microbiological quality of three turbot (Scophthabnus maximus) farms (A, B, and C) located in Galicia (northwest Spain) is given. The microbial load and types of bacteria in the internal organs (liver and kidney) of apparently healthy fish was monitored over a year, and all the disease problems occurring during this survey were analyzed. The percentage of healthy turbot in which positive bacterial growth was obtained was relatively high in the three ongrowing facilities. Farm A exhibited the poorest conditions of fish health with an average of 42% fish infected, while farm B showed the best microbiological quality with 27% of turbot harbouring bacteria in the internal organs. In all three farms, a wide range of bacteria was found in healthy turbot with Vibrio ( V. splendidus-V pelagius, Vjisheri-V harveyi and Vibrio spp.) and Pseudomonas spp. being the predominant groups comprising at least 80% of the total bacterial isolates in each farm. The highest number of pathological problems (22 ) with the most diverse bacterial flora occurred in farm A. Vibrio spp. and Pseudomonas spp. were the most prevalent bacteria recovered from diseased turbot. Haemorrhages in palate and jaws, tail and fins, and ulcerative lesions were the most frequent external clinical signs of diseased fish recorded in the three farms. However, it was not possible to associate a particular bacterial species with a specific pathology. Routine use in farm A of oxolinic acid and nitrofurantoin may have led to the development in the Vibrio strains of resistances to both chemotherapeutants (up to 25%).This study was supported by Grants MAR 9 l- 1133~CO2-0 1 and MAR 89- 0270 from the Comision Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnologia (CICYT), XUGA 8030389 from Xunta de Galicia (Spain), and EUREKA project No. EU-347, between Spain and Norway.Peer reviewe

CdSe is II-VI semiconductor with compact hexagonal structure. It has a band gap of 1.82 eV and a high stopping power for nuclear radiation. Single crystalline CdSe ingots were grown by Physical Vapor Transport (PVT) employing a horizontal reactor. As devices critically depend on material properties its single crystalline quality was determined by chemical etching and transmission electron microscopy. Results were compared to those corresponding to Bridgman High Pressure (HPB) grown material and also to PVT material grown in a vertical reactor.O CdSe é um semicondutor II-VI com estrutura hexagonal compacta.
