    Inconsistency in serial choice decision and motor reaction times dissociate in younger and older adults

    Intraindividual variability (inconsistency) in reaction time (RT) latencies was investigated in a group of younger (M = 25.46 years) and older (M = 69.29 years) men. Both groups performed 300 trials in 2-, 4-, and 8-choice RT conditions where RTs for decision and motor components of the task were recorded separately. A dissociation was evident in that inconsistency was greater in older adults for decision RTs when task demands relating to the number of choices and fatigue arising from time-on-task were high. For younger persons, a weak trend toward greater inconsistency in motor RTs was evident. The results are consistent with accounts suggesting that inconsistency in neurobiological mechanisms increases with age, and that attentional lapses or fluctuations in executive control contribute to RT inconsistency

    The Polar Expression of ENSO and Sea-Ice Variability as Recorded in a South Pole Ice Core

    An annually dated ice core recovered from South Pole (2850 in a.s.l.) in 1995, that covers the period 1487-1992, was analyzed for the marine biogenic sulfur species methanesulfonate (MS). Empirical orthogonal function analysis is used to calibrate the high-resolution MS series with associated environmental series for the period of overlap (1973-92). Utilizing this calibration we present a similar to500 year long proxy record of the polar expression of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and southeastern Pacific sea-ice extent variations. These records reveal short-term periods of increased (1800-50, 1900-40) and decreased sea-ice extent (1550-1610., 1660-1710, 1760-1800). In general, increased (decreased) sea-ice extent is associated with a higher (lower) frequency of El Nino events

    By allocating different information to team members, secret contracts can provide better incentives to perform with an intuitive organizational design. For instance, they may help to monitor monitors, and appoint secret principals. More generally, secret contracts highlight a rich duality between detection and enforcement with linear transfers. On the one hand, every disobedient deviation must be detectable to enforce an an outcome, but different behavior may be used to detect different deviations. On the other, every disobedient deviation must be attributable, i.e., some player can be identified as innocent after the deviation, to provide incentives with budget balance.     Comparison of fouling propensity between reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, and membrane distillation

    Resistance to fouling is often cited as an advantage of emerging desalination technologies such as forward osmosis and membrane distillation over the widely-used reverse osmosis process. However, the nature and magnitude of differences in fouling behavior between these three processes are not well characterized. This study directly compares the fouling and scaling behavior of reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), and direct contact membrane distillation (MD) in the same membrane module under identical hydrodynamic conditions (flux and cross-flow velocity). Fouling experiments were conducted using calcium sulfate as a model inorganic foulant and alginate as a model organic foulant. Although all three processes tolerated some degree of feed supersaturation for 36 h without inorganic fouling (scaling), FO exhibited the greatest scaling resistance, withstanding a feed of 33 ± 2 mM CaSO₄ (approximately twice saturation) without significant flux decline. Scaling occurred at similar concentrations at the membrane between MD and RO; however, while MD tolerated a more concentrated bulk feed due to reduced concentration polarization, flux decline after fouling was considerably more severe in MD. In contrast, MD tolerated organic fouling much better than FO or RO: despite accumulating a similar quantity of alginate gel over 18 h of operation, flux declined only 14% in MD versus 46–47% in RO and FO. These results are explained with respect to differences in temperature, membrane materials, and transport mechanisms between the three processes. Although FO and MD each exhibited superior resistance to one type of foulant, neither process outperformed RO in resistance to both organic and inorganic fouling. These findings inform a more nuanced approach to process selection for the treatment of complex water sources.     Comparison of quantitative real time PCR with Sequencing and ribosomal RNA-FISH for the identification of fungi in Formalin fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue specimens

    Background: Identification of the causative agents of invasive fungal infections (IFI) is critical for guiding antifungal therapy. Cultures remain negative in a substantial number of IFI cases. Accordingly, species identification from formalin fixed, paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue specimens by molecular methods such as fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) and PCR provides an appealing approach to improve management of patients. Methods: We designed FISH probes targeting the 28S rRNA of Aspergillus and Candida and evaluated them with type strains. Fluorescence microscopy (FM), using FISH probes and quantitative broadrange fungal PCR targeting the rRNA gene were applied to FFPE tissue specimens from patients with proven IFI in order to explore benefits and limitations of each approach. Results: PCR followed by sequencing identified a broad spectrum of pathogenic fungi in 28 of 40 evaluable samples (70%). Hybridisation of FISH probes to fungal rRNA was documented in 19 of 40 tissue samples (47.5%), including 3 PCR negative samples with low fungal burden. The use of FISH was highly sensitive in invasive yeast infections, but less sensitive for moulds. In samples with hyphal elements, the evaluation of hybridisation was impaired due to autofluorescence of hyphae and necrotic tissue background. Conclusions: While PCR appears to be more sensitive in identifying the causative agents of IFI, some PCR negative and FISH positive samples suggest that FISH has some potential in the rapid identification of fungi from FFPE tissue samples

    Non-operative management of posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction: design of a randomized clinical trial [NCT00279630]

    BACKGROUND: Posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is a common cause of foot pain and dysfunction in adults. Clinical observations strongly suggest that the condition is progressive. There are currently no controlled studies evaluating the effectiveness of exercise, orthoses, or orthoses and exercise on Stage I or IIA PTTD. Our study will explore the effectiveness of an eccentric versus concentric strengthening intervention to results obtained with the use of orthoses alone. Findings from this study will guide the development of more efficacious PTTD intervention programs and contribute to enhanced function and quality of life in persons with posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction. METHODS/DESIGN: This paper presents the rationale and design for a randomized clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of a treatment regime for the non-operative management of Stage I or IIA PTTD. DISCUSSION: We have presented the rationale and design for an RCT evaluating the effectiveness of a treatment regimen for the non-operative management of Stage I or IIA PTTD.     Political Polarization as a Constraint on Corruption: A Cross-National Comparison

    Efforts to explain corruption have increased dramatically in recent years. The interest stems from the increasing weight economists assign to corruption when explaining economic growth. Much research focuses on how political institutions influence perceptions of corruption. We move this debate in a new direction by addressing a previously ignored dimension: ideological polarization. We contend perceptions of corruption are determined not only by specific institutional features of the political system–such as elements of voting systems, ballot structures, or separation of powers–but by who sits at the controls. We employ panel data from a broad variety of countries to test our theoretical argument. Contrary to recent findings by both economists and political scientists, we show that ideological polarization predicts perceptions of corruption

    Differential response to resistance training in CHF according to ACE genotype

    The Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) gene may influence the risk of heart disease and the response to various forms of exercise training may be at least partly dependent on the ACE genotype. We aimed to determine the effect of ACE genotype on the response to moderate intensity circuit resistance training in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients. Methods: The relationship between ACE genotype and the response to 11 weeks of resistance exercise training was determined in 37 CHF patients (New York Heart Association Functional Class=2.3±0.5; left ventricular ejection fraction 28±7%; age 64±12 years; 32:5 male:female) who were randomised to either resistance exercise (n=19) or inactive control group (n=18). Outcome measures included V˙ O2peak, peak power output and muscle strength and endurance. ACE genotype was determined using standard methods. Results: At baseline, patients who were homozygous for the I allele had higher V˙ O2peak (p=0.02) and peak power (p=0.003) compared to patients who were homozygous for the D allele. Patients with the D allele, who were randomised to resistance training, compared to non-exercising controls, had greater peak power increases (ID pb0.001; DD pb0.001) when compared with patients homozygous for the I allele, who did not improve. No significant genotype-dependent changes were observed in V˙ O2peak, muscle strength, muscle endurance or lactate threshold. Conclusion: ACE genotype may have a role in exercise tolerance in CHF and could also influence the effectiveness of resistance training in this condition
