Coastal waters North East Atlantic geographic intercalibration group: Benthic invertebrate fauna ecological assessment methods

The European Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires the national classifications of good ecological status to be harmonised through an intercalibration exercise. In this exercise, significant differences in status classification among Member States are harmonized by comparing and, if necessary, adjusting the good status boundaries of the national assessment methods. Intercalibration is performed for rivers, lakes, coastal and transitional waters, focusing on selected types of water bodies (intercalibration types), anthropogenic pressures and Biological Quality Elements. Intercalibration exercises are carried out in Geographical Intercalibration Groups - larger geographical units including Member States with similar water body types - and followed the procedure described in the WFD Common Implementation Strategy Guidance document on the intercalibration process (European Commission, 2011). The Technical report on the Water Framework Directive intercalibration describes in detail how the intercalibration exercise has been carried out for the water categories and biological quality elements. The Technical report is organized in volumes according to the water category (rivers, lakes, coastal and transitional waters), Biological Quality Element and Geographical Intercalibration group. This report gives a description of the intercalibration of the different benthic assessment approaches for in coastal waters in the North East Atlantic Geographical Intercalibration Group (NEA-GIG) for types NEA 1/26 (Exposed or sheltered, euhaline, shallow waters), NEA 3/4 (Wadden sea type) and NEA 7 (Deep fjordic and sea loach systems). The benthic assessment approaches of nine European Member States (Belgium, Germany, Denmark, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom) and Norway are intercalibrated. In Spain, the competent authorities for the WFD application are the regions (‘autonomous communities’); therefore for the benthic assessment methods three regions have been considered: Basque Country, Andalusia and Cantabria (no information on Galicia or Asturias). Part D of the report describes the Germany assessment approach for the type NEA 5. The article reveals that between the mid-17th century and the mid-18th century, in the ecclesiastical world of the religious orders (Jesuits, franciscans, Carmelites, Cistercians, Augustinian, etc.) and the episcopate, there was the progressive adoption of the imperial symbol, the double-headed eagle, attribute of the Christian Empire, the germanic Holy Roman Empire emblem. However, in the religious field, this imperial eagle of the baroque time appears without the political insignia (sword, scepter and the imperial orb), adorning altars, monstrances, trumphal archs, facades of temples, doors, walls, domes, pulpits, sacred washbasins, sculptures and paintings of the Virgin and Child, liturgical robes, etc.; therefore related to the cult and the dogmas of the Catholic faith - in artistic works, the association between the double eagle and the flesh-spirit or human-divine unity, axial principle of the Catholic faith, represented by Virgin-Mother and Christ, is often indicated directly. The research has located and identified numerous remnants of the double eagle emblem in religious field in Portugal and Spain and in their conquests and dominions in America, Asia and Africa, and also in Italy, and the historiography on painful birth of the modern era in the West has never realized this phenomenon. Symbolizing absolute power, universal power, these works with sacred significance, as the ecclesiastical discourse of the time, demonstrate movement occurred in religious plane. With the aim to assert not only spiritual but also temporal power of Christ and his mystical body, the Church was impelled by the idea of restoring the "Republica Christiana" or Christendon - disrupted by conflicts of power and faith - and of introducing a Universal Apostolic Monarchy extended to all mankind: the Empire of the Last Days, the Empire of Christ in the world, the fifth Empire

On the role of semantic priming in selecting contextually relevant focus-alterantives

Prior research connecting alternative semantics and language processing has proposed a two-stagemodel under which the alternative set is derived from the set of word semantically primed by pro- cessing an element in focus (Braun and Tagliapietra, 2010; Husband and Ferreira, 2016; Gotzner and Spalek, 2019). However, due to its dependence on semantic priming, the two-stage model faces a number of conceptual issues. Chiefly, foci are not always semantically related to their con- textually relevant alternatives. To address this concern, I run two cross-modal probe-recognition task experiments on discourses that make salient an alternative which is semantically related to the focus and another which is semantically unrelated to the focus. In doing so, I test the predictions of two proposed models for the selection of alternatives which emphasize the role of discourse rep- resentations over that of semantic priming: the immediate-access model and the delayed-access model. The results suggest that both related and unrelated alternatives are available almost imme- diately after focus is encountered. I take these results to support the immediate-access model

La favela como espacio de exclusión social en la ciudad de Rio de Janeiro

La favela es parte del imaginario urbano de Rio de Janeiro en la actualidad, pero no siempre ha caracterizado a esta ciudad. Es producto de una serie de transformaciones que esta sufrió a lo largo del siglo pasado y que incluyen aspectos políticos, geográficos, económicos y sociales. Este artículo realiza una breve descripción de esas transformaciones, luego de presentar la ciudad en su geografía, en su historia y en sus símbolos, para así desarrollar someramente un análisis espacial de las novelas brasileñas Ciudad de Dios e Infierno, junto con esbozar el rol que sus autores cumplen en la lógica exclusiva de la sociedad.
