Abstract Most salt tolerant plants, halophytes, use seed germination for natural regeneration. However, germination in mixed-salt environments such as seawater is poorly understood and ion toxicity by Cl−, the most highly concentrated ion in seawater, is rarely considered over Na+. Here, we investigate Cl− toxicity in the germination of the halophyte Suaeda maritima in the presence of artificial seawater (ASW). Seeds were germinated at 15/5 °C in dilutions of ASW and at concentrations of NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2 and KCl as found in ASW. Solutions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) were used for osmotic comparison. Germination percentage and normal seedlings were quantified. Non-germinated seeds were tested for recovery on water. Germination rate (1/t50) was used in a halotime model to quantify the maximum concentration of Cl− (Cl−max) and Na+ (Na+max) for germination. Germination was most negatively affected when all salts were combined in the concentrations found in ASW. Recovery of non-germinated seeds from all salt treatments on water was low, but all germinated seeds formed normal seedlings. Germination on ASW was higher than on iso-osmotic solutions of PEG. The 1/t50 decreased with increasing Cl− and Na+ concentration, indicating maximum thresholds to germination at 1381 mM (Cl−max) and 1262 mM (Na+max). The results indicate that ASW does not produce an osmotic limitation to the germination of S. maritima, and exposure to salt ions can even promote germination. However, ion toxicity is the major limitation, with Cl− similarly as toxic as Na+. In mixed-salt environments such as seawater, Cl− toxicity should not be overlooked

Manipulating the antioxidant capacity of halophytes to increase their cultural and economic value through saline cultivation

Halophytes, salt-tolerant plants, are a source of valuable secondary metabolites with potential economic value. The steady-state pools of many stress-related metabolites are already enhanced in halophytes when compared with glycophytes, but growth under conditions away from the optimum can induce stress and consequently result in changes to secondary metabolites such as antioxidants. However, direct evidence for increasing the concentration of valuable secondary metabolites as a consequence of altering the salinity of the growing environment still remains equivocal. To address this, we analysed a range of metabolites with antioxidant capacity (including total phenols, flavonoids, ascorbate, reduced/oxidized glutathione and reactive oxygen species scavenging enzymes) in seedlings and plants from different families (Amaranthaceae, Brassicaceae, Plantaginaceae and Rhizophoraceae) and habitats grown under different salt concentrations. We show that it is possible to manipulate the antioxidant capacity of plants and seedlings by altering the saline growing environment, the length of time under saline cultivation and the developmental stage. Among the species studied, the halophytes Tripolium pannonicum, Plantago coronopus, Lepidium latifolium and Salicornia europaea demonstrated the most potential as functional foods or nutraceuticals.Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt/AZ/27708COST/STSM/FA/0901-041011-011415DEFR

Three-Dimensional Printing and Navigation in Bone Tumor Resection

One of the most promising advances raised by the current computer age is performing research “in silico,” which means computer-assisted. The objective of this chapter is firstly to evaluate if a 3D in-silico model of an oncological patient could be used to make a 3D-printed prototype in real scale, discriminating precisely healthy tissues, tumoral tissues and oncological margins. Secondly, the objective is to evaluate if this prototype could be representative enough to allow testing osteotomies under navigated guidance based on images. A tumor resection for a patient with diagnosed metaphyseal osteosarcoma of the proximal tibia was transferred into a rapid prototyping model, fabricated using 3D printing and representing different structures in different colors. The planned osteotomy was executed using Stryker Navigator to guide the cutting saw and the prototype was opened to verify the precision of the performed osteotomy. Both osteotomy planes showed successful correspondence with the safe margin, with a maximum error of 1 mm. The application of these techniques in general orthopedics would help to reduce the incidence of unforeseen intraoperative failures, contributing to obtain predictable surgical procedures. This would implement a new way of performing development, research and training in orthopedics and traumatology by in-silico technology

Abstract: Organic-matter evolution of soils from Sila uplands (Calabria, Italy). Soil organic matter (SOM) has long been known for its central role in chemical, biochemical and physiological soil processes. Efforts in optimizing crop production, minimizing environmental pollution, and enhancing soil quality all require a better understanding of the nature and evolution of soil organic matter for its proper management. Four sites (S1 ' S4), developed on an area of about 9000 ha, in the Sila Mountains, were evaluated to study the turnover of the soil organic matter. The SOM of four sites studied undergoes to a fast mineralization process in the sites S1, S3 and S4, a pastureland, a grass-pastureland, and a cropland, respectively. An opposite trend is observed in the S2 site, under mixed forest of coniferous and broadleaf, where prevailed the humification process

Limited data are available on complementary feeding in preterm infants, who show increased nutritional needs and are at risk of altered postnatal growth. The aim of this study was to investigate the timing and content of complementary feeding in a cohort of late preterm infants. We conducted a prospective, observational study, including mothers who had given birth to infants admitted to level I or II of care with a gestational age between 34 and 36 weeks. Mothers were contacted at 3, 6 and 12 months after delivery by phone calls and were asked about their infant\u2019s mode of feeding and the timing and schedule of the introduction of different solid foods types. A total of 49 mothers and 57 infants completed the study. The mean postnatal age of the introduction of complementary foods was 5.7 \ub1 0.7 months. Low energy and/or low protein-dense foods were first introduced in most infants. Fruit as the first type of complementary food in the infant\u2019s diet was associated with a 1.6-month advance in initiating complementary feeding. The present findings provide further insight into complementary feeding practices in late preterm infants and underline the need for specific recommendations addressing this vulnerable population

Background: Limb-salvage surgery has been well recognized as a standard treatment and alternative to amputation for patients with malignant bone tumors. Various limb-sparing techniques have been developed including tumor prosthesis, allograft, autograft and graft-prosthesis composite. However, each of these methods has short- and long-term disadvantages such as nonunion, mechanical failures and poor limb function. The technique of intracorporeal devitalization of tumor-bearing bone segment in situ by microwave-induced hyperthermia after separating it from surrounding normal tissues with a safe margin is a promising limb-salvage method, which may avoid some shortcomings encountered by the above-mentioned conventional techniques. The purpose of this study is to assess the healing process and revitalization potential of the devitalized bone segment by this method in a dog model. In addition, the immediate effect of microwave on the biomechanical properties of bone tissue was also explored in an in vitro experiment. Methods: We applied the microwave-induced hyperthermia to devitalize the distal femurs of dogs in situ. Using a monopole microwave antenna, we could produce a necrotic bone of nearly 20 mm in length in distal femur. Radiography, bone scintigraphy, microangiography, histology and functional evaluation were performed at 2 weeks and 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months postoperatively to assess the healing process. In a biomechanical study, two kinds of bone specimens, 3 and 6 cm in length, were used for compression and three-point bending test respectively immediately after extracorporeall
