Evaluation Of Elastic Modulus And Stress Gradient Of PECVD Silicon Nitride Thin Films
This study investigated the techniques for determining the elastic modulus and estimating the stress gradient of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) silicon nitride thin films. The experimentally determined elastic modulus was then used in a finite element beam model to compute the stress distribution inside the thin films using a commercial finite element analysis package. The computed beam displacement caused by a given stress gradient was compared with the displacement experimentally evaluated using optical interference microscopy. This comparison allows the stress gradient of the PECVD silicon nitride membrane introduced by the fabrication process to be evaluated
Neopterin levels are independently associated with cardiac remodeling in patients with chronic heart failure
Neopterin, a marker of inflammation and monocyte activation, is found increased in patients with heart failure (HF). This study investigates whether neopterin levels correlate with left ventricular (LV) remodeling and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), a marker of cardiac stress, in chronic HF (CHF) patients with different severity of disease. The relationship between elevated neopterin levels and LV enlargement in CHF patients suggests a crucial role of monocyte activation in the development of cardiac dysfunction in CHF patients. Assessment of neopterin levels is a potential biomarker to evaluate the progression of LV remodeling in CHF patients
Grid-Listening and Grid-Ringing: Alternative Concepts for Grid-Following and Grid-Forming within Power Systems Frequency Transients
The paper introduces the concepts of grid-listening and grid-ringing as alternative ways to interpret the classes of converter control commonly known as grid-following and grid-forming. The intrinsic nature of these two controls define their interaction within the frequency transients in power systems, and in particular with the disturbance propagation and the synchronization process. The grid-following interacts with the oscillations in the system just detecting them: for that, it can be regarded as grid-listening. The grid-forming interacts with the power-frequency oscillations contributing to them: for that, it can be regarded as grid-ringing. This conceptual revisiting is illustrated with a representative system, and further discussed with some examples on a benchmark power syste
‘White People All Over’: Refugee Performance, Fictional Aesthetics, and Dramaturgies of Alterity-Empathy
This article by Graça P. Corrêa and Szabolcs Musca follows the production process of Passajar, an immersive participatory theatre project collaboratively created by four theatre-makers and refugees from Congo, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Zimbabwe. Developed under the curatorship of Portuguese choreographer Madalena Victorino for Festival Todos in Lisbon, this multilingual experimental work focused on representing migrant experiences through a postdramatic artistic gaze. The production refused the forms of testimonial theatre and with it the contradictory role of facilitators, opting instead for a multidimensional fictional aesthetics practice.
In this article the authors explore how Passajar performance and dramaturgical processes address difference in actual creative practice; and what are the ‘refugeedom’ aesthetics and ethical affects being generated by working with refugee participants. Similar to a growing number of non-verbatim migrant theatre initiatives, Passajar switched from the real to the fictitious via non-realistic representations and processes of abstraction. Arguably, this practice went against victimhood narratives, but does suspending traditional means of identification and empathy help develop new understandings on migration, or, on the contrary create detachment in audiences? What are the ethical consequences to audiences and refugee participants alike?
Drawing upon philosophical concepts by Henri Bergson, Baruch Spinoza and Gilles Deleuze, the article examines how they critically contribute towards a discussion of the dramaturgies of alterity and empathy that were deployed in Passajar. By reflecting on both rehearsal process and final production, it reveals the ethical affects of Passajar, as well as transformative alternatives for migrant representation beyond the stage.
Improving angle stability by switching shunt reactors in mixed overhead cable lines. An Italian 400 kV case study
Stringent environmental constraints make the construction of new transmission overhead lines more and more difficult. Alternatively, today it is possible to use cable lines for high (HV) and extra-high (EHV) voltage systems. The configuration of the so-called mixed lines can create some problems in the operation of the electrical system, both during steady-state and transient conditions. In particular, the system stability is one of the main concerns when analyzing the dynamic response of power systems. In this paper, the study of angular stability of a system containing a mixed line is presented: a specific control logic applied to the shunt reactors of the mixed line is proposed as improvement of the overall system stability. The proposed switching logic is first discussed from a theoretical point of view and validated with two different testing systems. Then, the existing overhead-cable lines connecting Sicily to the rest of continental Europe 400 kV power system are taken as case study for the application of the proposed switching strategy. Several simulations are performed in the power system analysis software NEPLAN360: the results show the fundamental role of the timing of the control actions applied on the shunt reactors in helping the system to keep the stability. The proposed control proves to be an effective support to the system subjected to critical contingencies, contributing decisively to avoid the angular separation between areas and therefore to preserve the stability of the system

Analysis and simulations of the primary frequency control during a system split in continental europe power system
The occurrence of system separations in the power system of Continental Europe has been observed in recent decades as a critical event which might cause power imbalances higher than the reference incident specified per system design, representing an actual challenge for the stability and safe operation of the system. This work presents an analysis and simulations of the primary frequency control in the Continental Europe synchronous area in conditions of system separation. The adopted approach is based on fundamental aspects of the frequency-containment reserve process. The analysis takes an actual event into consideration, which determined the separation of the system in January 2021. The main purpose of the work is the development of specific models and simulations able to reproduce the actual split event. Due to specific arrangements discussed in detail, it is possible to obtain a substantial match between the simulations and the frequencies registered after the system split. The work also provides insight into the importance of the temporal sequence of power imbalances and defensive actions in the primary frequency control process. The models developed in the work are finally used to investigate the separation event under different operating conditions, such as missing defensive actions and low inertia scenarios
