We prove that the set of permutations generated by a stack of depth two and an innite stack in series has a basis (dening set of forbidden patterns) consisting of 20 permutations of length 5, 6, 7 and 8. We prove this via a \canonical" generating algorithm

Linking Teacher Educators, Knowledge, and the Quality of Practice in Schools

Children in this country are entrusted to teachers in schools for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, approximately 36 weeks a year, for 12 to 13 years. Citizens concerned with the future want to know if the children of today are being prepared for the world of tomorrow. Parents want to know what is being done to and for their sons and daughters. And in these times of financial cutbacks, taxpayers want to know where their tax dollars are going. There is widespread belief that schools in general, and teaching in particular, should be much better today than 5, 10, or more years ago. There is, furthermore, both a belief that teaching and schools are not appreciably better than they were and a certainty that the educational system is not as good as it should be. The responsibility for controlling the quality of what teachers do in schools is handled by a variety of different people and institutional mechanisms. The purpose of this paper is to examine one group of individuals-teacher educators-and the ways they exert influence on the quality of practice in schools

Information about whose knowledge is accepted as important is valuable in understanding how a profession evolves. The term elders describes the individuals who control invisible networks of prestige and who determine what information is accepted for publication in professional journals. These published works stand as the foundation for the knowledge base of a discipline. The purpose of this article was to identify the elders in physical education teacher education (PETE) and to trace their academic genealogy. Elders were defined as major contributors to the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education from 1981 through 1989. The articles published by these subjects were generally, but not exclusively, research-related. Hence, aspects related to faculty research performance were selected as descriptors that may facilitate comparisons of PETE professors to other groups of professors and to future PETE professors. Subjects\u27 gender, prestige of doctoral program, mentoring, and prestige of current institution of employment were studied as these indicators represent major correlates with research productivity

Virginia Shellfish Aquaculture Situation and Outlook Report : Results of the 2015 Virginia Shellfish Aquaculture Crop Reporting Survey

    Get PDF
The hatchery-based shellfish aquaculture industry in Virginia continues to grow adding significant value to the Commonwealth’s seafood marketplace. Today, watermen harvest both hard clams and oysters from the Commonwealth’s public resources, albeit at rates diminished from historic levels. At the same time, Virginia’s watermen-farmers, utilizing production from a land-based hatchery, are providing additional quantities of quality shellfish to consumers. This survey, in its 10th year, is intended to continue annual assessments with which to gauge growth and inputs in Virginia’s hatchery-based shellfish aquaculture industry. This report is based upon an industry survey completed during the first quarter of 2016. While these trends are widely acknowledged, until this annual survey was initiated in 2006 there had been no consistent reporting of production and economic trends in Virginia’s shellfish aquaculture industry. Periodic assessments are necessary to inform growers and related interests about the actual status and trends in the industry

The shellfish aquaculture industry in Virginia continues to grow, adding significant value to the state’s seafood marketplace. Today, watermen continue to harvest both hard clams and oysters from the state’s public resources, albeit at diminished rates. At the same time, Virginia’s watermen-farmers are providing growing quantities of additional quality shellfish to consumers. In recent years, folliowing the lead of the hard clam industry, a significant transition to intensive aquaculture of native oysters is underway. The once-extensive oyster planting utilizing wild seed has contracted primarily as a result of endemic oyster diseases and increasing wildlife predation of seed oysters. In its place is an emerging aquaculture sector based on improved culture techniques and disease-resistant oyster seed. While these trends are widely acknowledged, there has been no consistent reporting of production and economic trends in Virginia’s shellfish aquaculture industry. Periodic assessments are necessary to inform growers and related interests about the actual status and trends in the industry. The intent of this survey is to continue annual assessments with which to gauge growth and inputs in Virginia’s shellfish aquaculture industry. This report is based upon an industry survey completed during the first quarter of 2014

This dress was inspired by Joan of Arc, the tragic heroin from the Middle Ages. Joan was a girl, a soldier, and a savior who played a major role during the Hundred Years War leading her troops (Bartlet, 1859). However, despite her patriotism and great achievements, she was captured and sold to the enemy, the English, for heresy and perjury, when she was only nineteen years old (Thurston, 1910)
