The relationship between visual memory and rider expertise in a show-jumping context
Individuals develop visual skills while participating in sport. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of reported riding expertise on the recall of visual information relating to show-jumps. We identified a relevant (F1) and irrelevant (F2) point of focus in 22 photographs of show-jumps. Participants were students (n = 40) with varying levels of horse riding ability. The task, having viewed each photograph for four seconds, was to identify F1s or F2s from four alternatives viewed for ten seconds. F1s were recalled significantly more than F2s (P<0.001). Riding expertise did not affect overall recall but only intermediate/advanced riders recalled F1s significantly better than F2s (P<0.05 and P<0.001 respectively). Recall of F1s but not of F2s was significantly correlated with riding expertise (P<0.05). Training riders in visual attention techniques might improve ridden performance and could reduce the number of accidents associated with lack of experience and/or rider error

The interactions of numerous project characteristics, with particular reference to project performance, were studied. Determinants of success are identified along with the accompanying implications for client organization, parent organization, project organization, and future research. Variables are selected which are found to have the greatest impact on project outcome, and the methodology and analytic techniques to be employed in identification of those variables are discussed
A large scale extinction map of the Galactic Anticenter from 2MASS
We present a 127deg x 63deg extinction map of the Anticenter of the Galaxy,
based on and colour excess maps from 2MASS. This 8001 square degree
map with a resolution of 4 arcminutes is provided as online material. The
colour excess ratio / is used to determine the power law index of
the reddening law (\beta) for individual regions contained in the area (e.g.
Orion, Perseus, Taurus, Auriga, Monoceros, Camelopardalis, Cassiopeia). On
average we find a dominant value of \beta=1.8+-0.2 for the individual clouds,
in agreement with the canonical value for the interstellar medium. We also show
that there is an internal scatter of \beta values in these regions, and that in
some areas more than one dominant \beta value is present. This indicates large
scale variations in the dust properties. The analysis of the A_V values within
individual regions shows a change in the slope of the column density
distribution with distance. This can either be attributed to a change in the
governing physical processes in molecular clouds on spatial scales of about 1pc

Measuring brand image: Shopping centre case studies
'Branding' is well known for consumer products but power has shifted from manufacturers' brands towards retailers'. The term 'image' is more common than 'brand' in the context of shopping centres, but 'branding' may become more important. In this study, the authors first investigated qualitatively, asking shoppers to describe centres in 'personality' terms and eliciting clear descriptive differences between centres. For example, one in-town centre was 'dull, boring and old-fashioned . . . not exciting, just OK'; a larger regional centre was 'trendy, prestigious . . . strong, vibrant, big and colourful'. Second, the authors evaluated six UK shopping centres quantitatively using a questionnaire survey (n = 287). The 'strong and vibrant' centre scored significantly higher than the 'dull and boring' one. Despite 'branding' being little used by shopping centres, those with the better 'brand images' tended to have larger catchment areas, sales and rental incomes. The authors contend that brand management could pay rewards in terms of customer numbers, sales turnover and rental income
A shared mechanism of muscle wasting in cancer and Huntington's disease.
Skeletal muscle loss and dysfunction in aging and chronic diseases is one of the major causes of mortality in patients, and is relevant for a wide variety of diseases such as neurodegeneration and cancer. Muscle loss is accompanied by changes in gene expression and metabolism that lead to contractile impairment and likely affect whole-body metabolism and function. The changes may be caused by inactivity, inflammation, age-related factors or unbalanced nutrition. Although links with skeletal muscle loss have been found in diseases with disparate aetiologies, for example both in Huntingtons disease (HD) and cancer cachexia, the outcome is a similar impairment and mortality. This short commentary aims to summarize recent achievements in the identification of common mechanisms leading to the skeletal muscle wasting syndrome seen in diseases as different as cancer and HD. The latter is the most common hereditary neurodegenerative disorder and muscle wasting is an important component of its pathology. In addition, possible therapeutic strategies for anti-cachectic treatment will be also discussed in the light of their translation into possible therapeutic approaches for HD
Human factors analysis of workstation design: Earth Radiation Budget Satellite Mission Operations Room
A human factors analysis addressed three related yet distinct issues within the area of workstation design for the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) mission operation room (MOR). The first issue, physical layout of the MOR, received the most intensive effort. It involved the positioning of clusters of equipment within the physical dimensions of the ERBS MOR. The second issue for analysis was comprised of several environmental concerns, such as lighting, furniture, and heating and ventilation systems. The third issue was component arrangement, involving the physical arrangement of individual components within clusters of consoles, e.g., a communications panel
On the calculation of supersonic, separating, and reattaching flows
A method is developed for solving the laminar and turbulent compressible boundary-layer equations for separating and reattaching flows. Results of this method are compared with experimental data for two laminar and three turbulent boundary-layer, shock-wave interactions. Several Navier-Stokes solutions were obtained for each of the laminar boundary-layer, shock-wave interactions considered. Comparison of these solutions indicates a first-order sensitivity in C sub f to the computational mesh selected in both the viscous and inviscid portions of the flow
