    Extension professionals are continually faced with the challenge of effectively communicating relevant information to an ever-evolving audience with diverse interests. Using focus group data, this article highlights specific educational programming needs of nonindustrial private forest landowners (NIPFs) in Mississippi. Findings indicate NIPFs are more likely to adopt new ideas if educational programming is tailored to their specific needs, consequently indicating the need to group the audience by their interests. Data also emphasize the importance of employing new technology as means for communicating more efficiently

    Bifunctional thrombin inhibitors based on the sequence of hirudin45-65.

    The interaction of alpha-thrombin with the hirudin (HV1) fragment N alpha-acetyl desulfo hirudin45-65 (P51) was investigated. Kinetic analysis revealed that P51 inhibits the proteolysis of a tripeptidyl substrate with Ki = 0.72 +/- 0.13 and 0.11 +/- 0.03 microM for bovine and human alpha-thrombins, respectively. The inhibition was partially competitive, affecting substrate binding to the enzyme-inhibitor complex by a factor alpha = 2 (bovine) and alpha = 4 (human) characteristic of hyperbolic inhibitors. P51 also inhibited thrombin-induced fibrin clot formation with IC50 values of 0.94 +/- 0.20 and 0.058 +/- 0.006 microM for bovine and human alpha-thrombins, respectively. The enhanced antithrombin activity for human thrombin could be attributed to species variations in the putative auxiliary "anion" exosite since N alpha-acetyl desulfo hirudin55-65 displayed the same rank order of potency shift in a clotting assay without inhibiting the amidolytic activity of either enzyme. From these observations, a potent thrombin inhibitor was designed having modified residues corresponding to the P1 and P3 recognition sites. N alpha-Acetyl[D-Phe45, Arg47] hirudin45-65 (P53) emerged as a pure competitive inhibitor with a Ki = 2.8 +/- 0.9 nM and IC50 = 4.0 +/- 0.8 nM (human alpha-thrombin) and is designated as a "bifunctional" inhibitor. Its enhanced potency could be explained by a cooperative intramolecular interaction between the COOH-terminal domain of the inhibitor and the auxiliary exosite of thrombin on the one hand, and the modified NH2-terminal residues with the catalytic site on the other

    Equations over free inverse monoids with idempotent variables

    We introduce the notion of idempotent variables for studying equations in inverse monoids. It is proved that it is decidable in singly exponential time (DEXPTIME) whether a system of equations in idempotent variables over a free inverse monoid has a solution. The result is proved by a direct reduction to solve language equations with one-sided concatenation and a known complexity result by Baader and Narendran: Unification of concept terms in description logics, 2001. We also show that the problem becomes DEXPTIME hard , as soon as the quotient group of the free inverse monoid has rank at least two. Decidability for systems of typed equations over a free inverse monoid with one irreducible variable and at least one unbalanced equation is proved with the same complexity for the upper bound. Our results improve known complexity bounds by Deis, Meakin, and Senizergues: Equations in free inverse monoids, 2007. Our results also apply to larger families of equations where no decidability has been previously known.Comment: 28 pages.     On the Munn-Silbey approach to polaron transport with off-diagonal coupling

    Improved results using a method similar to the Munn-Silbey approach have been obtained on the temperature dependence of transport properties of an extended Holstein model incorporating simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal exciton-phonon coupling. The Hamiltonian is partially diagonalized by a canonical transformation, and optimal transformation coefficients are determined in a self-consistent manner. Calculated transport properties exhibit substantial corrections on those obtained previously by Munn and Silbey for a wide range of temperatures thanks to a numerically exact evaluation and an added momentum-dependence of the transformation matrix. Results on the diffusion coefficient in the moderate and weak coupling regime show distinct band-like and hopping-like transport features as a function of temperature.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accpeted in Journal of Physical Chemistry B: Shaul Mukamel Festschrift (2011

    Predictors of placement from a juvenile detention facility

    The purpose of this project was to determine whether certain personal, socioeconomic, and court-related factors are significantly related to the differential placement of delinquent and dependent children from the detention facility at the Donald E. Long Home. A stratified random sample was composed of 173 placements of children who were held in detention after a preliminary hearing. The review of literature revealed that little systematic. Information is known regarding the placement process as it is related to differential placement of children from a detention facility. A code sheet was developed for recording the information in the children’s records maintained by the court. Fourteen variables were ultimately selected for analysis of their relationship to differential placement. These variables were subjected to three statistical approaches; a descriptive analysis of the random sample, testing of the significance of each variable to the alternatives in placement by either Chi square or analyses of variance, and testing of several variables in combination by discriminant function. This study was limited by the fact that only demographic variables were tested. Although three individual variables were found to have a high degree of significance in relation to placement, the data as produced within the scope of this research project does not provide an effective placement profile. The need for additional research in the area of the differential placement process is clearly indicated. Suggestions are made for future research

    Species distribution modeling reveals strongholds and potential reintroduction areas for the world's largest eagle

    The highly interactive nature of predator-prey relationship is essential for ecosystem conservation; predators have been extirpated, however, from entire ecosystems all over the Earth. Reintroductions comprise a management technique to reverse this trend. Species Distribution Models (SDM) are preemptive tools for release-site selection, and can define levels of habitat quality over the species distribution. The Atlantic Forest of South America has lost most of its apex predators, and Harpy Eagles Harpia harpyja-Earth's largest eagle-are now limited to few forest pockets in this domain. Harpy Eagles are supposedly widespread in the Amazon Forest, however, where habitat loss and degradation is advancing at a rapid pace. We aim to describe the suitability of threatened Amazonian landscapes for this eagle. We also aim to assess the suitability of remaining Atlantic Forest sites for Harpy Eagle reintroductions. Here we show that that considerable eagle habitat has already been lost in Amazonia due to the expansion of the "Arc of Deforestation", and that Amazonian forests currently represent 93% of the current distribution of the species. We also show that the Serra do Mar protected areas in southeastern Brazil is the most promising region for Harpy Eagle reintroductions in the Atlantic Forest. Reintroduction and captive breeding programs have been undertaken for Harpy Eagles, building the technical and biological basis for a successful restoration framework. Our distribution range for this species represents a 41% reduction of what is currently proposed by IUCN. Furthermore, habitat loss in Amazonia, combined with industrial logging and hunting suggest that the conservation status of this species should be reassessed. We suggest researchers and conservation practitioners can use this work to help expand efforts to conserve Harpy Eagles and their natural habitats
