The present study makes a multimodal discourse analysis of comedy talk shows' logos of Pakistani TV channels from the perspective of their ideology and meaning of image. To analyze multimodal discourses using social semiotics as a way gives a direction to analyze the multi-layered meaning in a discourse. For this purpose, 4 famous TV programmes' logos were selected. Faiclough' (1995) 3D model has been applied to make multimodal critical analysis of comedy talk shows' logosThe study highlights the ways through which ideologies and power relations are expressed. Results of the study indicate that these logos construct multimodal discourse through particular language and image, and ideally exercise their power and the mainstream ideology of TV channels in Pakistan.</p

Fe3O4 known as magnetite is one of the oxides of iron which plays a major role in various fields of sciences. Fe3O4 was synthesized by precipitation method using NH3.H2O, FeCl2.4H2O and FeCl3.6H2O as precursor materials. For synthesis of 5% Ag-Fe3O4, the green synthetic method was used for immobilization of Ag nanoparticles on Fe3O4 using leaves extract of Calotropis gigantea plant. The synthesized Fe3O4 and 5% Ag-Fe3O4 were employed as catalyst in degradation of methylene blue. The photo catalytic activity of Fe3O4 was remarkably enhanced by doping of Fe3O4 with Ag nanoparticles. Advanced instrumental techniques including XRD, EDX, TGA and SEM were used for characterization of synthesized particles. The immobilization of Ag on Fe3O4 enhanced the photo degradation of methylene blue from 40 to 72% at 40 °C which confirms that 5% Ag-Fe3O4 is an active catalyst for treatment of dye contaminated water. Ag-Fe3O4 exhibited almost same catalytic activity in two successive cycles. Bull. Chem. Soc. Ethiop. 2020, 34(1), 123-134. DOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.4314/bcse.v34i1.1

ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF A GAS TURBINE COMPRESSOR WASHING AT DIFFERENT INTERVALS

Get PDF
Gas turbine compressor fouling is a major operational issue that affects engine performance. In desert oil and gas, field compressor fouling can be caused by pollution such as airborne ash, smog, hydrocarbons and dust. Accumulation of such pollution in the compressor annulus can lead to sticky fouling. This can ultimately result in the reduction of the compressor mass flow and pressure ratio. In order to maintain constant output power, it is then necessary to increase the turbine entry temperature (TET). The result of such an operational change will cause higher emission rates. In addition, it will decrease the creep life of engine hot components and overall engine thermal efficiency. The investigation of the effect of compressor on-line cleaning leads to the following findings: (i) Frequent cleaning maintains longer creep life of the high-pressure turbine. (ii) More financial benefits due to reduction on fuel flow. (iii) Less cost of cleaning materials per engine, cost of manpower and overheads. In summary from cost aspect with the best frequency of washing intervals (4 weekly), approximately $ 30,000 will be saved annually. On the other hand, in order to attain better engine performance, a weekly washing interval is necessary.&nbsp

HEMATOLOGICAL VARIATIONS AND ASSESMENT OF HEAVY METALS IN SINDH SPARROW (PASSER PYRRHONOTUS) AS A BIOINDICATOR IN PUNJAB AREAS OF PAKISTAN

Sindh sparrows, prevalent in Sindh region of Pakistan, are non-migratory birds abundant in human-inhabited areas globally, except Antarctica. Given their close association with human settlements, these birds serve as crucial indicators for biological monitoring in regions affected by pollution. This study focused on assessing the hematological parameters and heavy metal concentrations in various organs of Sindh sparrows in the Punjab regions of Pakistan. The collected blood samples underwent analysis for hematological indices and heavy metal concentrations. The results indicated variability in hematological analysis of sparrows. Fluctuations were observed in the concentrations of different heavy metals, with significant differences in zinc and iron, while chromium, cadmium, and nickel concentrations showed non-significant differences. The patterns of heavy metal accumulation revealed higher concentrations of chromium, nickel, and iron in the liver, contrasting with the cadmium and zinc in kidneys. In conclusion, significant correlations were observed among the concentrations of Zinc, Chromium, Cadmium, Nickel, and Iron in kidney, liver, and muscles of both male and female Sindh sparrows. The findings underscore the need for further comprehensive studies to assess heavy metal accumulation in birds, highlighting the urgency to address environmental pollution that poses risks to avian species and human populations worldwide

Flame Retardancy and Excellent Electrical Insulation Performance of RTV Silicone Rubber

Room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber filled with aluminum trihydrate (ATH) is substantially engaged in electrical outdoor insulation applications. The pristine silicone rubber is highly combustible. ATH filled silicone rubber offers excellent electrical insulation but lacks in providing adequate flame retardancy. This short communication reports the novel results on improved flame retardancy of pristine and ATH filled silicone rubber whilst retaining the electrical insulation properties to a great extent. Results suggest that the presence of only one percent of graphene nanoplatelets with ATH sharply reduces the heat release rate and rate of smoke release. A minor reduction in dielectric breakdown strength and volume resistivity is noticed. Furthermore, permittivity and dielectric loss at power frequency suggest that a marginal 1% concentration of nanoplatelet with ATH is an excellent approach to fabricate flame retardant silicone rubber with an acceptable electrical insulation level

The research study is conducted to understand interaction of illness, symptoms, context, patients response and the clinical skill vis a vis better management of secretory diarrhea. Specific aim of this study is to determine the impact of intensive medical intervention with herbal drug “Dirasif” (Test) and allopathic drug “Furoxone” (Control) to treat secretory diarrhea. This is randomized controlled clinical trial in primary care with an open intervention. All patients judged by the physician to need either herbal or allopathic medicine for secretory diarrhea are randomized in treatment therapy. Clinical trial was conducted on hundred patients from both groups i.e.50 patient from control and 50 from experimental group having age between 12-40 year.Comparison of data recorded by participants relating to these variables showed significant differences between test and control groups (p < 0.05) despite the fact that no side effects were recorded in test group. Overall clinical success was observed in both treatment groups however the efficacy of the test treated medication (Dirasif) was superior as p=0.03. Dirasif is more effective than the Furoxone in the treatment of secretory diarrhea in Gadap community Karachi, Pakistan. Keywords: Secretory diarrhea, efficacy, dirasif, furoxon

A survey was conducted from February 2022 to May 2022 on the usage of antibiotics at a poultry farm in different areas of Multan, Punjab Pakistan. A well-organized questionnaire was used for the collection of data. Sixty poultry farms were surveyed randomly in the Multan district. All of these Farms were using antibiotics. Antibiotics are commonly used for the treatment of diseases. Some are used as preventive medicine and a few are used as growth promotors. neomycin, erythromycin, oxytetracycline, streptomycin, and colistin are the broad-spectrum antibiotics that are being used commercially. Enrofloxacin and Furazolidone are the common antibiotics that are being used in Studies these days. The class of Fluoroquinolones is commonly used in poultry farms. Thirty-three patterns of antibiotic usage were observed at poultry farms. multi-drug practices were also observed on various farms. In this study, 25% of antibiotics are prescribed by the veterans while more than 90 % were acquired from the veterinary store. This study provides information about the antibiotics which are commonly being used in the study location district Multan. It is expected that the finding of this survey will be helpful in the development of new strategies against the misuse of antibiotics on farms
