This paper presents a review of the basic concepts of swarm intelligence and some views regarding the future of re-search in this area aimed at establishing a starting point for future work in different engineering fields. A bibliogra-phic search of the most updated databases regarding classic articles on the subject and the most recent applications and results was used for constructing this review, especially in the areas of automatic control, signal and image pro-cessing and robotics. The main concepts were selected and organised in chronological order. A taxonomy was ob-tained for evolutionary computing techniques, a clear differentiation between swarm intelligence and other evolutio-nary algorithms and an overview of the different techniques and applications

X-ray-based virtual slicing of TB-infected lungs

Hollow organs such as the lungs pose a considerable challenge for post-mortem imaging in preclinical research owing to their extremely low contrast and high structural complexity. The aim of our study was to enhance the contrast of tuberculosis lesions for their stratification by 3D x-ray&-based virtual slicing. Organ samples were taken from five control and five tuberculosis-infected mice. Micro-Computed Tomography (CT) scans of the subjects were acquired in vivo (without contrast agent) and post-mortem (with contrast agent). The proposed contrast-enhancing technique consists of x-ray contrast agent uptake (silver nitrate and iodine) by immersion. To create the histology ground-truth, the CT scan of the paraffin block guided the sectioning towards specific planes of interest. The digitalized histological slides reveal the presence, extent, and appearance of the contrast agents in lung structures and organized aggregates of immune cells. These findings correlate with the contrast-enhanced micro-CT slice. The abnormal densities in the lungs due to tuberculosis disease are concentrated in the right tail of the lung intensity histograms. The increase in the width of the right tail (~376%) indicates a contrast enhancement of the details of the abnormal densities. Postmortem contrast agents enhance the x-ray attenuation in tuberculosis lesions to allow 3D visualization by polychromatic x-ray CT, providing an advantageous tool for virtual slicing of whole lungs. The proposed contrast-enhancing technique combined with computational methods and the diverse micro-CT modalities will open the doors to the stratification of lesion types associated with infectious diseases. The research leading to these results received funding from the Innovative Medicines Initiative (www.imi.europa.eu) Joint Undertaking under grant agreement no. 115337, whose resources comprise funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007–2013) and EFPIA companies in kind contribution. Survey on major worldwide regulations on seismic base isolation of buildings

    Get PDF
Base isolation solutions are efficient alternatives for seismic protection of buildings and for enhancing resilient capacity. Currently, seismic isolation is focused principally on the critical infrastructure of public health, transportation, education, etc. Despite these considerations, the current worldwide implementation of this technology is still insufficient. A crucial step to be taken into the promotion of any earthquake-resistant construction technique is the development of design codes that, although being inspired in the major international regulations, account for the local seismic effects, among other factors. With the aim of assisting code developers, this work analyzes and compares the code requirements for seismic base isolation in Japan, China, Russia, Italy, USA, and Chile. Two prototype seismically isolated hospital buildings located in high and medium seismicity zones (Los Angeles and New Mexico, respectively) were analyzed and designed with the examined codes. It is concluded that there are high differences among some of their requirements even though the technology used is the same.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Novel chimeric proteins mimicking SARS-CoV-2 spike epitopes with broad inhibitory activity.

    Get PDF
SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein mediates virus attachment to the cells and fusion between viral and cell membranes. Membrane fusion is driven by mutual interaction between the highly conserved heptad-repeat regions 1 and 2 (HR1 and HR2) of the S2 subunit of the spike. For this reason, these S2 regions are interesting therapeutic targets for COVID-19. Although HR1 and HR2 have been described as transiently exposed during the fusion process, no significant antibody responses against these S2 regions have been reported. Here we designed chimeric proteins that imitate highly stable HR1 helical trimers and strongly bind to HR2. The proteins have broad inhibitory activity against WT B.1 and BA.1 viruses. Sera from COVID-19 convalescent donors showed significant levels of reactive antibodies (IgG and IgA) against the HR1 mimetic proteins, whereas these antibody responses were absent in sera from uninfected donors. Moreover, both inhibitory activity and antigenicity of the proteins correlate positively with their structural stability but not with the number of amino acid changes in their HR1 sequences, indicating a conformational and conserved nature of the involved epitopes. Our results reveal previously undetected spike epitopes that may guide the design of new robust COVID-19 vaccines and therapies. This work was supported by grants CV20.26565 from the Consejería de Economía y Conocimiento, Junta de Andalucía (Spain), PID2019.107515RB.C21 from the Spanish State Research Agency (SRA/10.13039/501100011033), and co-funded by ERDF/ESF, “A way to make Europe”/“Investing in your future. Operation of modular multilevel converters under voltage constraints

    Get PDF
MMCs are normally designed to operate in the linear region of the PWM. This limits the peak-to-peak phase voltage in the AC port to be lower than the DC port voltage. It is possible to increase the AC voltage beyond this limit by the use of overmodulation strategies. However, this is at the price of an increase in the harmonic content (THD) of the voltages and currents, and consequently, of a decrease of the power quality. While this type of operation is not desired in normal conditions, there are exceptional circumstances in which the MMC could be forced to operate in this mode. These would include transient anomalies, e.g. a temporary decrease of the DC port voltage or a temporary increase of the AC port voltage, or quasi-permanent conditions, e.g. the failure (and subsequent disconnection) of one or more cells in one or more arms of the MMC. Under this circumstances, the voltage margin between the DC and the AC port voltages required for the normal operation of the MMC might be lost. Consequently, the MMC should operate in the overmodulation region, or turned-off otherwise. This paper addresses the use of overmodulation techniques in MMC under voltage constraints. Under these circumstances, the MMC control should guarantee stable operation, (i.e. a controlled power transfer between the DC and AC ports with the cell voltages maintained at their target values) and minimize the distortion of the currents, and consequently the adverse effect on the power qualit
