For the first quarter of 2020, the state of a pandemic by Covid-19 is declared and each country initiates a series of decisions in accordance with the suggestions of the World Health Organization, that is where we want to analyze the role played by Colombia as a member of the OECD since 2020 based on the progress in infections and deaths from Covid-19. The member countries of the OECD are recognized for being a group of countries with good practices in public policies that benefit their inhabitants in different areas of interest including health, infrastructure and social welfare, for this reason the variables of contagion, mortality, vaccination progress, number of hospital beds per thousand inhabitants, population density and total population with quarterly measurements throughout 2020 and 2021. Antena de Parche Monopolar de Doble Frecuencia

    Get PDF
A dual-frequency patch antenna with monopolar radiation patterns at both working frequencies is presented in this paper. The antenna design is based on a conventional patch with two concentric short-circuited conditions with a separating gap between them. Both shorting conditions are implemented with vias between the patch and the ground plane. These conditions impose two modes with a uniform electric field distribution both in phase and amplitude at the edge of the patch antenna. These modes result in a monopolar radiation pattern at two different frequencies. The working frequencies can be arbitrary set and depend on the patch dimensions and the location of the shorting vias. Two feeding strategies have been studied: a single coaxial probe which excites both monopolar modes and a different coaxial probe for each mode. A two-port design working at 2.6 GHz and 4.8 GHz is presented, obtaining the desired monopolar radiation pattern at both frequencies. High isolation between the feeding ports is achieved

Optical imaging spectroscopy for rapid, primary screening of SARS-CoV-2: a proof of concept

    Get PDF
Effective testing is essential to control the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission. Here we report a-proof-of-concept study on hyperspectral image analysis in the visible and near-infrared range for primary screening at the point-of-care of SARS-CoV-2. We apply spectral feature descriptors, partial least square-discriminant analysis, and artificial intelligence to extract information from optical diffuse reflectance measurements from 5 µL fluid samples at pixel, droplet, and patient levels. We discern preparations of engineered lentiviral particles pseudotyped with the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 from those with the G protein of the vesicular stomatitis virus in saline solution and artificial saliva. We report a quantitative analysis of 72 samples of nasopharyngeal exudate in a range of SARS-CoV-2 viral loads, and a descriptive study of another 32 fresh human saliva samples. Sensitivity for classification of exudates was 100% with peak specificity of 87.5% for discernment from PCR-negative but symptomatic cases. Proposed technology is reagent-free, fast, and scalable, and could substantially reduce the number of molecular tests currently required for COVID-19 mass screening strategies even in resource-limited settings.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, 2020 Emergency Call for Research Projects about the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the COVID-19 disease Instituto de Salud Carlos III by Grant Number EQC2019-006240-PComisión Europea, Joint Research Center (JRC) HUMAINT project

Complete Real-Scale Application of Recycled Aggregates in a Port Loading Platform in Huelva, Spain

The application of recycled aggregates (RA) from construction and demolition waste and crushed concrete blocks is a very important challenge for the coming years from the environmental point of view, in order to reduce the exploitation of natural resources. In Spain, the use of these recycled materials in the construction of road bases and sub-bases is growing significantly. However, presently, there are few studies focused on the properties and behavior of RA in civil works such as road sections or seaport platforms. In this work, two types of RA were studied and used in a complete real-scale application. Firstly, recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) were applied in the granular base layer under bituminous superficial layers, and secondly mixed recycled aggregates (MRA) which contain a mix of ceramic, asphalt, and concrete particles were applied in the granular subbase layer, under the base layer made with RCA. Both RA were applied in a port loading platform in Huelva, applying a 100% recycling rate. This civil engineering work complied with the technical requirements of the current Spanish legislation required for the use of conventional aggregates. The environmental benefits of this work have been very relevant, and it should encourage the application of MRA and RCA in civil engineering works such as port platforms in a much more extended way. This is the first and documented real-scale application of RA to completely build the base and sub-base of a platform in the Huelva Port, Spain, replacing 100% of natural aggregates with recycled ones

Turning carbon dots into selenium bearing nanoplatforms with in vitro GPx-like activity and pro-oxidant activity

    Get PDF
Selenium (Se) has been defined as the “Janus element”, with one face showing antioxidant activity and the other pro-oxidant activity. The biological effect of Se depends on both dose and speciation. Se nanoparticles are attracting major interest, although their large-scale preparation for biomedical applications is not trivial. We hypothesize that acid anhydride-coated carbon dots (AACD) are an attractive platform for preparing nanoparticles containing chemically defined Se. The reaction of AA-CD with 3- selenocyanatopropan-1-amine yields carbon dots bearing selenocyanate and carboxylate groups (CD-SeCN) that allow for tuning the hydrosolubility. CD-SeCN has a Se content of 0.36 μmol per mg of nanoparticles, and they show the typical photoluminescence of carbon dots. The selenocyanate groups (SeCN) exhibited glutathione peroxidase-like activity and cytotoxicity. Data show that antioxidant behavior differs between normal and tumor cells, and the evaluation on HEK293 and A549 cells reveals that the toxicity of CD-SeCN depends on dose, time, and intracellular glutathione (GSH) content. The toxicity of CD-SeCN decreases with the time of incubation and the cell death mechanism switches from necrosis to apoptosis, indicating that CD-SeCN is neutralized. Additionally, high levels of intracellular GSH exert a protective effect. These results support a pharmacological potential in cancers with low levels of intracellular GSH. The use of AA-CD as nanoplatforms is a general strategy that paves the way for the engineering of advanced nanosystemsSpanish institution Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion y Universidades (No. CTQ2017- 86125-P)Unit of Excellence in Chemistry Applied to Biomedicine and the EnvironmentCentro de Instrumentacion Cientifica (Universidad de Granada)Universidad de Granada/CBUASpringer Natur

Mechanical behavior and failure micromechanisms of hybrid 3D woven composites in tension

The deformation and failure micromechanisms of a hybrid 3D woven composite were studied in tension. Plain and open-hole composite coupons were tested in tension until failure in the fill and warp directions, as well as fiber tows extracted from the dry fabric and impregnated with the matrix. The macroscopic evolution of damage in the composite coupons was assessed by means of periodic unloading–reloading (to obtain the elastic modulus and the residual strain), whereas the microscopic mechanism were established by means of X-ray computed microtomography. To this end, specimens were periodically removed from the mechanical testing machine and infiltrated with ZnI-containing liquid to assess the main damage modes as a function of the applied strain. The experimental observations and the predictions of an isostrain model were used to understand the key factors controlling the elastic modulus, strength and notch sensitivity of hybrid 3D woven composites in tension. It was found that the full contribution of the glass fibers to the composite strength was not employed, due to the premature fracture of the carbon fibers, but their presence increased the fracture strain and the energy dissipated during fracture. Thus, hybridization of the 3D woven composite led to a notch-insensitive behavior as demonstrated by open-hole test

Dipolos impresos multifrecuencia cargados con partículas metamateriales

Multi-frequency printed dipoles based on antipodal printed dipoles loaded with metamaterial particles are presented. Split Ring Resonators (SRRs) are used as metamaterial particles in order to obtain fully printed and planar antennas. First, a simplified model of these antennas is developed. This model is based on a printed dipole loaded with the equivalent circuit of the SRRs. This model shows that the working frequencies are very close to the self-resonant frequencies of the dipole and the SRRs. Moreover, a dualfrequency printed dipole is designed, manufactured and measured. This dipole works simultaneously at 1.32 GHz and 2.82 GHz. Finally, the previous idea is extended to increase the bandwidth of the dual-band dipoles and develop multifrequency printed dipoles (printed dipoles which work simultaneously at three or more frequencies). This is made by using SRRs with different dimensions

X-ray microtomography analysis of the damage micromechanisms in 3D woven composites under low-velocity impact

    Get PDF
3D woven composites reinforced with either S2 glass, carbon or a hybrid combination of both and containing either polyethylene or carbon z-yarns were tested under low-velocity impact. Different impact energies (in the range of 21–316 J) were used and the mechanical response (in terms of the impact strength and energy dissipated) was compared with that measured in high-performance, albeit standard, 2D laminates. It was found that the impact strength in both 2D and 3D materials was mainly dependent on the in-plane fiber fracture. Conversely, the energy absorption capability was primarily influenced by the presence of z-yarns, having the 3D composites dissipated over twice the energy than the 2D laminates, irrespective of their individual characteristics (fiber type, compaction degree, porosity, etc.). X-ray microtomography revealed that this improvement was due to the z-yarns, which delayed delamination and maintained the structural integrity of the laminate, promoting energy dissipation by tow splitting, intensive fiber breakage under the tup and formation of a plug by out-of-plane shear
