    Photometric properties and origin of bulges in SB0 galaxies

    We have derived the photometric parameters for the structural components of a sample of fourteen SB0 galaxies by applying a parametric photometric decomposition to their observed II-band surface brightness distribution. We find that SB0 bulges are similar to bulges of the early-type unbarred spirals, i.e. they have nearly exponential surface brightness profiles (=1.48±0.16=1.48\pm0.16) and their effective radii are strongly coupled to the scale lengths of their surrounding discs (=0.20±0.01=0.20\pm0.01). The photometric analysis alone does not allow us to differentiate SB0 bulges from unbarred S0 ones. However, three sample bulges have disc properties typical of pseudobulges. The bulges of NGC 1308 and NGC 4340 rotate faster than bulges of unbarred galaxies and models of isotropic oblate spheroids with equal ellipticity. The bulge of IC 874 has a velocity dispersion lower than expected from the Faber--Jackson correlation and the fundamental plane of the elliptical galaxies and S0 bulges. The remaining sample bulges are classical bulges, and are kinematically similar to lower-luminosity ellipticals. In particular, they follow the Faber--Jackson correlation, lie on the fundamental plane and those for which stellar kinematics are available rotate as fast as the bulges of unbarred galaxies.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&

To access the final edited and published work seehttp://dx.doi.org/10.1021/jf402429kEggplant (Solanum melongena) varieties with increased levels of phenolics in the fruit present enhanced functional quality, but may display greater fruit flesh browning. We evaluated 18 eggplant accessions for fruit total phenolics content, chlorogenic acid content, DPPH scavenging activity, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity, liquid extract browning, and fruit flesh browning. For all the traits we found a high diversity, with differences among accessions of up to 3.36-fold for fruit flesh browning. Variation in total content in phenolics and in chlorogenic acid content accounted only for 18.9% and 6.0% in the variation in fruit flesh browning, and PPO activity was not significantly correlated with fruit flesh browning. Liquid extract browning was highly correlated with chlorogenic acid content (r = 0.852). Principal components analysis (PCA) identified four groups of accessions with different profiles for the traits studied.     Database of spatial distribution of non indigenous species in Spanish marine waters

    Research in marine Spanish waters are focused on several actions to achieve an effectively management on protected areas, with the active participation of the stakeholders and research as basic tools for decision-making. Among these actions, there is one about the knowledge and control on NIS. One of its objectives is the creation of NIS factsheets, which are going to be added to the National Marine Biodiversity Geographical System (GIS) providing complementary information about taxonomic classification, common names, taxonomic synonyms, species illustrations, identification morphological characters, habitat in the native and introduced regions, biological and ecological traits, GenBank DNA sequences, world distribution, first record and evolution in the introduced areas, likely pathways of introduction, effects in the habitats and interaction with native species, and potential management measures to apply. The database will also provide data for (1) the European online platforms, (2) the environmental assessment for the Descriptor 2 (D2-NIS) of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), as well as (3) supporting decisions made by stakeholders. It is the result of extensive collaboration among scientist, manager’s and citizen science in the Spanish North-Atlantic, South-Atlantic, Gibraltar Strait-Alboran, Levantine-Balearic and Canary Islands marine divisions, providing an updated overview of the spatial distribution of relevant extended and invasive NIS of recent and established NIS introduced by maritime transport and aquaculture pathways, as well as on cryptogenic or native species in expansion due to the climatic water warming trend

    Time to Switch to Second-line Antiretroviral Therapy in Children With Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Europe and Thailand.

    Background: Data on durability of first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) in children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are limited. We assessed time to switch to second-line therapy in 16 European countries and Thailand. Methods: Children aged <18 years initiating combination ART (≄2 nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors [NRTIs] plus nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor [NNRTI] or boosted protease inhibitor [PI]) were included. Switch to second-line was defined as (i) change across drug class (PI to NNRTI or vice versa) or within PI class plus change of ≄1 NRTI; (ii) change from single to dual PI; or (iii) addition of a new drug class. Cumulative incidence of switch was calculated with death and loss to follow-up as competing risks. Results: Of 3668 children included, median age at ART initiation was 6.1 (interquartile range (IQR), 1.7-10.5) years. Initial regimens were 32% PI based, 34% nevirapine (NVP) based, and 33% efavirenz based. Median duration of follow-up was 5.4 (IQR, 2.9-8.3) years. Cumulative incidence of switch at 5 years was 21% (95% confidence interval, 20%-23%), with significant regional variations. Median time to switch was 30 (IQR, 16-58) months; two-thirds of switches were related to treatment failure. In multivariable analysis, older age, severe immunosuppression and higher viral load (VL) at ART start, and NVP-based initial regimens were associated with increased risk of switch. Conclusions: One in 5 children switched to a second-line regimen by 5 years of ART, with two-thirds failure related.     A study on the distribution of the mineral nutrients in the different parts of rose bush was carried out with the aim of chossing whichever of these might be most suitable as diagnostic tissue, the cultivar used being "Gabriela". Although for some nutrients (such as N, K) the leaf position on the stem does not seem to have a great effect on its foliar concentrations, in other cases (Ca, Mn, Cu) these concentrations vary widely according to the situation of the leaf. In general, the greatest concentration variations are noted in the youngest leaves, the maximum stability being shown by the first two leaves of 5 leaflets. This stabiliry of the mineral nutrient concentrations in these first two leaves of 5 leaflets makes suitable as samples for diagnostic purposes.Peer reviewe
