Measuring inconsistency in a network intrusion detection rule set based on Snort
In this preliminary study, we investigate how inconsistency in a network intrusion detection rule set can be measured. To achieve this, we first examine the structure of these rules which are based on Snort and incorporate regular expression (Regex) pattern matching. We then identify primitive elements in these rules in order to translate the rules into their (equivalent) logical forms and to establish connections between them. Additional rules from background knowledge are also introduced to make the correlations among rules more explicit. We measure the degree of inconsistency in formulae of such a rule set (using the Scoring function, Shapley inconsistency values and Blame measure for prioritized knowledge) and compare the *This is a revised and significantly extended version of [1]
Mass Spectrometric Study of Acoustically Levitated Droplet Illuminates Molecular-Level Mechanism of Photodynamic Therapy for Cancer involving Lipid Oxidation
Even though the general mechanism of photodynamic cancer therapy is known, the details and consequences of the reactions between the photosensitizer‐generated singlet oxygen and substrate molecules remain elusive at the molecular level. Using temoporfin as the photosensitizer, here we combine field‐induced droplet ionization mass spectrometry and acoustic levitation techniques to study the “wall‐less” oxidation reactions of 18:1 cardiolipin and 1‐palmitoyl‐2‐oleoyl‐sn‐glycero‐3‐phospho‐(1′‐rac‐glycerol) (POPG) mediated by singlet oxygen at the air–water interface of levitated water droplets. For both cardiolipin and POPG, every unsaturated oleyl chain is oxidized to an allyl hydroperoxide, which surprisingly is immune to further oxidation. This is attributed to the increased hydrophilicity of the oxidized chain, which attracts it toward the water phase, thereby increasing membrane permeability and eventually triggering cell death
Detecting Evasive Malicious URL Using Graph Algorithm
The present disclosure describes systems and methods to enable inspecting of byte streams using a bipartite match algorithm to detect use of evasive techniques to defeat Uniform Resource (URL) filtering. According to an aspect of the present disclosure, a two stage dynamic programming algorithm is provided that matches signatures once and only once just like DFA in the first stage, and uses polynomial runtime to select a matching pattern in the second stage. According to an example implementation of the present disclosure, the patterns are compiled into an n*m binary matrix plus one additional column to describe the modifiers, where n is the number of patterns and m is the number of unique signatures used in the patterns. In the first stage of runtime, an n*m binary matrix is built where n is the number of tokens matched against the DFA and m is the number of signatures such that e(i,j)=true if and only if the ith token matches the jth signature. In the second stage of runtime, the sub runtime n*m matrix is obtained for a particular pattern such that e(i,j)=true if and only if the ith token matches the jth signatures in the pattern. A bipartite graph can be built where there are two sets of vertex, n and m, where n is token and m is signature. There is a weight 1 edge between an ith vertex in n and an nth vertex in m if e(i,j) in the matrix is true
Exploration of Building Information Modeling and Integrated Project Cloud Service in early architectural design stages
[EN] In the evolving Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Integrated Project Cloud Service (IPCS) has become crucial. These tools are particularly essential during the early design stages, as they enable comprehensive management and integration of project information, thus promoting effective decision-making throughout project lifecycles. This combined approach enhances inter-organizational collaborations, improves design and construction practices, and creates a communal data platform for stakeholders. This research explores the effectiveness of the BIM-IPCS system in streamlining data exchange and information flow during early design, suggesting ways to minimize errors, speed up processes, and reduce construction costs through dependable networks. Genuinely Distributed Byzantine Machine Learning
Machine Learning (ML) solutions are nowadays distributed, according to the
so-called server/worker architecture. One server holds the model parameters
while several workers train the model. Clearly, such architecture is prone to
various types of component failures, which can be all encompassed within the
spectrum of a Byzantine behavior. Several approaches have been proposed
recently to tolerate Byzantine workers. Yet all require trusting a central
parameter server. We initiate in this paper the study of the ``general''
Byzantine-resilient distributed machine learning problem where no individual
component is trusted.
We show that this problem can be solved in an asynchronous system, despite
the presence of Byzantine parameter servers and
Byzantine workers (which is optimal). We present a new algorithm, ByzSGD, which
solves the general Byzantine-resilient distributed machine learning problem by
relying on three major schemes. The first, Scatter/Gather, is a communication
scheme whose goal is to bound the maximum drift among models on correct
servers. The second, Distributed Median Contraction (DMC), leverages the
geometric properties of the median in high dimensional spaces to bring
parameters within the correct servers back close to each other, ensuring
learning convergence. The third, Minimum-Diameter Averaging (MDA), is a
statistically-robust gradient aggregation rule whose goal is to tolerate
Byzantine workers. MDA requires loose bound on the variance of non-Byzantine
gradient estimates, compared to existing alternatives (e.g., Krum).
Interestingly, ByzSGD ensures Byzantine resilience without adding communication
rounds (on a normal path), compared to vanilla non-Byzantine alternatives.
ByzSGD requires, however, a larger number of messages which, we show, can be

Effects of Antioxidant N-acetylcysteine Against Paraquat-Induced Oxidative Stress in Vital Tissues of Mice
PQ enhanced lipid peroxidation (MDA) levels in liver tissue compared to control whereas NAC decreased MDA levels (p<0.05). NAC significantly increased MDA in brain tissue (p<0.05). PQ significantly depleted glutathione (GSH) levels in liver (p=0.001) and brain tissue (p<0.05) but non-significant GSH depletion in lung tissue. NAC counteracted PQ, showing a moderate increase GSH levels in liver and brain tissues. PQ significantly increased 8-oxodeoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG) levels (p<0.05) in liver tissue compared to control without a significant change in brain tissue. NAC treatment ameliorated PQ-induced oxidative DNA damage in the liver tissue. PQ significantly decreased the relative mtDNA amplification and increased the frequency of lesions in liver and brain tissue (p<0.0001), while NAC restored the DNA polymerase activity in liver tissue but not in brain tissue. In conclusion, PQ induced lipid peroxidation, oxidative nuclear DNA and mtDNA damage in liver tissues and depleted liver and brain GSH levels. NAC supplementation ameliorated the PQ-induced oxidative stress response in liver tissue of mice. Paraquat (PQ) is a commonly used herbicide that induces oxidative stress via reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) against PQ-induced oxidative stress in mice. Male Balb/C mice (24) were randomly divided into 4 groups and treated for 3 weeks: 1) control (saline), 2) NAC (0.5% in diet), 3) PQ (20 mg/kg, IP) and 4) combination (PQ + NAC). Vascular smooth muscle TRPC3 channels facilitate the inverse hemodynamic response during status epilepticus
Human status epilepticus (SE) is associated with a pathological reduction in cerebral blood flow termed the inverse hemodynamic response (IHR). Canonical transient receptor potential 3 (TRPC3) channels are integral to the propagation of seizures in SE, and vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) TRPC3 channels participate in vasoconstriction. Therefore, we hypothesize that cerebrovascular TRPC3 channels may contribute to seizure-induced IHR. To examine this possibility, we developed a smooth muscle-specific TRPC3 knockout (TRPC3smcKO) mouse. To quantify changes in neurovascular coupling, we combined laser speckle contrast imaging with simultaneous electroencephalogram recordings. Control mice exhibited multiple IHRs, and a limited increase in cerebral blood flow during SE with a high degree of moment-to-moment variability in which blood flow was not correlated with neuronal activity. In contrast, TRPC3smcKO mice showed a greater increase in blood flow that was less variable and was positively correlated with neuronal activity. Genetic ablation of smooth muscle TRPC3 channels shortened the duration of SE by eliminating a secondary phase of intense seizures, which was evident in littermate controls. Our results are consistent with the idea that TRPC3 channels expressed by cerebral VSMCs contribute to the IHR during SE, which is a critical factor in the progression of SE.Fil: Cozart, Michael A.. Finally, we propose a new measure of inconsistency for prioritized knowledge which incorporates the normalized number of atoms in a language involved in inconsistency to provide a deeper inspection of inconsistent formulae. We conclude that such measures are useful for the network intrusion domain assuming that introducing expert knowledge for correlation of rules is feasible.<br/
Wwox Deletion in Mouse B Cells Leads to Genomic Instability, Neoplastic Transformation, and Monoclonal Gammopathies
WWOX (WW domain containing oxidoreductase) expression loss is common in various cancers and characteristic of poor prognosis. Deletions, translocations, and loss of expression affecting the WWOX gene are a common feature of various B cell neoplasms such as certain B cell lymphomas and multiple myeloma. However, the role of this common abnormality in B cell tumor initiation and/or progression has not been defined. In this study, we conditionally deleted Wwox early in B cell development by means of breeding Cd19-Cre transgenic mice crossed to Wwox floxed mice (Cd19 Wwox KO). We observed a significant reduced survival in Cd19 Wwox KO mice and the development of B cell neoplasms including B cell lymphomas, plasma cell neoplasias characterized by increased numbers of CD138+ populations as well as monoclonal gammopathies detected by serum protein electrophoresis. To investigate whether Wwox loss could play a role in genomic instability, we analyzed DNA repair functions during immunoglobulin class switch joining between DNA segments in antibody genes. While class switch recombination (CSR) was only slightly impaired, Wwox deficiency resulted in a dramatic shift of double strand break (DSB) repair from normal classical-NHEJ toward the microhomology-mediated alternative-NHEJ pathway, a pathway associated with chromosome translocations and genome instability. Consistent with this, Wwox deficiency resulted in a marked increase of spontaneous translocations during CSR.
