    Smad signalling in the ovary

Although most of the different Smad knockouts are embryonic lethal, it is known, however, that in Smad1 and Smad5 knockout mice primordial germ cell development is impaired and that Smad3 deficient mice harbouring a deletion in exon 8 exhibit impaired folliculogenesis and reduced fertility.     A Computer Vision-Based Approach for Non-contact Modal Analysis and Finite Element Model Updating

    Computer vision-based techniques for modal analysis and system identification are rapidly becoming of great interest for both academic research and engineering practice in structural engineering. For instance, this is particularly relevant in fields such as bridge or tall building monitoring, where the large size of the structure would require an expensive sensor network, and for the characterisation of very slender, highly-flexible structural components, where physically-attached sensors cannot be deployed without altering the mass and stiffness of the system under investigation. This study concerns the latter case. Here, an algorithm for the full-field, non-contact extraction and processing of useful information from vibrational data is applied. Firstly, video acquisition is used to capture rapidly very spatially- and temporally-dense information regarding the vibrational behaviour of a high-aspect-ratio (HAR) prototype wing, with high image quality and high frame rate. Video processing is then applied to extract displacement time histories from the collected data; in turn, these are used to perform Modal Analysis (MA) and Finite Element Model Updating (FEMU). Results are benchmarked against the ones obtained from a single-point laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV). The study is performed on the beam-like spar of the wing prototype with and without the sensors attached to appreciate the disruptive effects of sensor loading. Promising results were achieved

    Investigating Online Fan Responses to the Rooney Rule in English Football

    Purpose This work critically investigates online fan responses towards the implementation of the affirmative action policy, the Rooney Rule, within English professional football. It explores systemic and structural racism and the history of the Rooney Rule, before analysing football fans' Twitter comments concerning the policy within English football across an 18-month period. Design/methodology/approach This research utilised a bespoke search programme to identify and analyse Tweets which focused on the Rooney Rule in English football. A total of 205 posts were thematically analysed and a series of codes were created. Findings The findings illustrated that fans were generally divided over the Rooney Rule. Over half of the participants welcomed counter measures against structural racism although many caveated responses by critiquing the Rule's approach and scope. For others, however, the policy is yet another example of ‘reverse racism’ and ‘political correctness gone mad’. The findings illustrate that there is an undercurrent of hostility towards anti-racist action and a belief that sport is inherently meritocratic and fair. Originality/value While much research has focused on examining online reactions to ‘trigger events’, this chapter provides an empirical insight into contemporary football fan responses towards anti-racist action in the ‘beautiful game’. It demonstrates that there are a series of common misconceptions and misunderstandings towards affirmative action policies in sport. Once we become aware of such misunderstandings, we can attempt to remedy them in order to aid the efficacy of anti-racist action

    Two-Loop Quantum Corrections of Scalar QED with Non-Minimal Chern-Simons Coupling

    We investigate two-loop quantum corrections to non-minimally coupled Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. The non-minimal gauge interaction represents the magnetic moment interaction between the charged scalar and the electromagnetic field. We show that the one-loop renormalizability of the theory found in previous work does not survive to the two-loop level. However, with an appropriate choice of the non-minimal coupling constant, it is possible to renormalize the two-loop effective potential and hence render it potentially useful for a detailed analysis of spontaneous symmetry breaking induced by radiative corrections.Comment: 29 pages, including 21 figures.     This study presents the personal testimonies of male British ex-Armed Forces personnel who have experienced violence and abuse victimization that was perpetrated by civilian female partners. In this research, we argue that to embark upon any understanding of the domestic lives of military personnel, an appreciation of the linkages to the cultural context of the military institution is necessary. Understanding the influence of the military institution beyond the military domain is crucial. We unveil the nature and character of the violence and abuse and how the servicemen negotiated their relationships. In doing so, we highlight the embodiment of military discipline, skills, and tactics in the home—not ones of violence which may be routinely linked to military masculinities; rather ones of restraint, tolerance, stoicism, and the reduction of a threat to inconsequential individual significance

    Amphiregulin cooperates with bone morphogenetic protein 15 to increase oocyte developmental competence by gap junction-mediated enhanced metabolite supply

    This study assessed the participation of amphiregulin (AREG) and bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP15) during maturation of bovine cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) on cumulus cell function and their impact on subsequent embryo development. AREG treatment of COCs enhanced blastocyst formation and quality only when in the presence of BMP15. Expression of hyaluronan synthase 2 was enhanced by follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) but not by AREG, which was reflected in the level of cumulus expansion. Although both FSH and AREG stimulated glycolysis, AREG treated COCs had higher glucose consumption, lactate production and ratio of lactate production to glucose uptake. Autofluorescence levels in oocytes, indicative of NAD(P)H and FAD++, were increased with combined AREG and BMP15 treatment of COCs. In contrast, these treatments did not alter autoflouresence levels when cumulus cells were removed from oocytes, even in the presence of other COCs, suggesting oocyte-cumulus gap-junctional communication (GJC) is required. FSH contributed to maintaining GJC for an extended period of time. Remarkably, BMP15 was equally effective at maintaining GJC even in the presence of AREG. Hence, AREG stimulation of COC glycolysis and BMP15 preservation of GJC may facilitate efficient transfer of metabolites from cumulus cells to the oocyte thereby enhancing oocyte developmental competence.
