Teacher - Student Relationships in Court - Mandated Adult Education: A Phenomenological Study

    Get PDF
While there is a considerable body of literature on adult correctional education, this literature almost exclusively deals with teachers and students working within incarceration settings, where students are in jail or prison. There is a lack of research on the experiences of teachers working with students who are a part of the correctional system but are placed within the community , i.e., community corrections. In this study the author examines the experiences of teachers working with court - mandated, community corrections students in GED/ABE programs. Seven adult education teachers share their experiences in this phenomenological study. The findings of the study indicate a special relationship, a chiasm, between teachers and students. Implications of this chiasm, an experience described by Merleau - Ponty, are explored

The Messy World of Reflexivity: Qualitative Journey

    Get PDF
Qualitative Journeys is an insightful study and guide of the messy world of reflexivity in qualitative research. The difficulties are compounded as both mentors and students struggle with this prickly issue. Qualitative Journeys opens the space within which qualitative research is done and allows the reader to tag along on reflexive treks that exemplify the often messy processes that result when students and mentors undertake the qualitative walkabout

Interface Phenomena During Gas-Liquid Mass Transfer Operations

Summary: By the use of photographic techniques, the absorption rates of single CO2 bubbles suspended in downward flowing aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions were determined for various MEA and CO2 liquid concentrations. It was found that a linear correlation of the experimental data could be obtained by plotting the mass of the bubble to the one-third power versus absorption time. Such a correlation indicates that the absorption rate per unit area is constant. The absorption rates were found to increase with MEA concentration and to decrease with total absorbed CO2 concentration (that physically absorbed and chemically combined). However, because of excessive scatter in the experimental data, no satisfactory correlation of the absorption rates with liquid concentrations could be found. Theoretical analyses of various absorption models were made. Analogue and digital computers where used when the differential equations could not be solved analytically. For two normal MEA it was found that the best explanation of the experimental rate 4x10-6 gm-mole/cm2-sec, was given by the model of steady-state diffusion with simultaneous irreversible second order chemical reaction in a stagnant film of thickness 5x10-3cm. The differential equations involved with this proposed model can best be solved by analogue computer. In the course of the investigation several absorption models were solved analytically. Although the results indicate that the models did not apply, details of the analyses are given in Appendix A for academic interest. Appendices B and C contain the details of the theoretical analyses by digital and analogue computers

Forced to Learn: Community-based Correctional Education

    Get PDF
Community-based correctional education has received scant attention in adult literacy research yet mandatory education is a growing part of the legal system and is fueled by research that suggests a link between correctional education and lower rates of recidivism. Growth in alternative to prison programs affects local ABE and GED programs. Adults who attend community-based correctional programs as a condition of their probation or parole face many challenges. The purpose of this existential-phenomenological study was to understand the experience of those adults. Findings describe students’ experiences of being forced to attend a GED program. Opening a space for these stories may help adult educators in community-based programs improve their practice by understanding how students experience the GED program

“It’s Like a Prison without Bars”: Experiences in a Mandatory GED Program

The purpose of this phenomenological research study was to describe how adult students experience a legally coerced GED program in a community alternative to prison program. A phenomenological-hermeneutical approach was used to derive common themes that represented essence of the students’ experiences

The kudzu bug, Megacopta cribraria (F.) (Heteroptera: Plataspidae), is an invasive insect pest introduced from Asia in 2009 that poses a threat to soybeans (Glycine max [L.] Merr. [Fabales: Fabaceae]) and other legume crops in the United States. Initially discovered in Georgia, M. cribraria rapidly expanded across the southeast until 2014 when a significant decline in its population was observed across many locations. This notable decline in M. cribraria populations is attributed to the emergence of new parasitoids and pathogens in its new invasive range. So far, only a single egg parasitoid, Paratelenomus saccharalis (Dodd) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae), is known to parasitize the eggs of M. cribraria in the United States. Here, we report a new egg parasitoid of M. cribraria identified as Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii, 1928 (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), recovered from egg masses of M. cribraria collected from soybean in Alabama. O. nezarae is reported to parasitize eggs from a variety of heteropteran families and has been observed parasitizing M. cribraria in China. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of O. nezarae in North America. The potentials of O. nezarae for biological control of M. cribraria in the United States and the direction of future studies are discussed
