El rol del capital social en los procesos de desarrollo local. Límites y alcance en grupos indígenas

Hay una idea, promovida por los organismos internacionales y el Estado, en torno a que el capital social contribuirá al fortalecimiento de la democracia, a la equidad, a la cultura de participación y, consiguientemente, al desarrollo. No obstante, es necesario detenernos en lanoción de capital social indígena, que pasa por tres elementos: a) la capacidad para sobrevivir económica y culturalmente; b) la posibilidad de conformar organización, mecanismos de lucha, resistencia y ajuste a una sociedad y a un proyecto nacional, en medio de una relación de subordinación y vulnerabilidad alta, y c) los efectos que las estructuras hegemónicas tienen en el debilitamiento del capital social indígena y su transformación en nuevas expresiones de capital social o incluso en su pérdida y ausencia

Population dynamics of flocculating yeasts

The problem of understanding the recognition and specific interactions in a population of yeast flocculating cells is discussed. The biochemistry, physiology and genetics of flocculation is briefly reviewed. Yeast flocculation requires the expression of a specific protein (lectin) on flocculent cells, and carbohydrate (receptors) on neighbouring cells. Adhesion experiments performed with cells whose flocculation is repressed by growth conditions, indicating that the inhibition of flocculation is due to inhibition or inactivation of lectin-like component. Additionally, using adhesion experiments, it is demonstrated that cells of non-flocculent strain interact by establishing a true bond with flocculent cells rather than by entrapment inside the floc matrix. As phenotypic expression of flocculation, for several strains, is shown to be repressed, modulated or induced by modifying growth conditions, the constitutiveness and inducibility of flocculation are also discussed

Determinants of bank efficiency: the portuguese case

The objective of this study is to evaluate the technical efficiency of the Portuguese banking sector in the most recent period and to identify the determinants that explain it. Methods: The methodology used consisted on the application of the non-parametric approach, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), to estimate the technical efficiency of the banks, in the period between the first semester of 2005 and the first semester of 2017. The analysis used the classic models CCR and BCC following the banking intermediation approach. Findings & Value added: The results, in general, indicate that the level of efficiency of the Portuguese banking sector is high, suggesting that the banks operating in it are efficient in optimizing their resources. It also concludes that the determinants that influence efficiency are the size, the capital structure, the antiquity and the macroeconomic situation of the country. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach to bank efficiency that involves time series data after the Portuguese sovereign debt crisis and, therefore, were not considered in previous studies.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Constant mean curvature surfaces and Heun's differential equations

This thesis is concerned with the problem of constructing surfaces of constant mean curvature with irregular ends by using the class of Heun’s Differential Equations. More specifically, we are interested in obtaining immersion of punctured Riemann spheres into three dimensional Euclidean space with constant mean curvature. These immersions can be described by a Weierstrass representation in terms of holomorphic loop Lie algebra valued 1-forms. We describe how to encode each of the differential equations in Heun’s family in the Weierstrass representation. Next, we investigate monodromy problems for each of the cases in order to ensure periodicity of all the resulting immersions. This allows us to find four families of surfaces with constant mean curvature and irregular ends. These families can be described as trinoids, cylinders, perturbed Delaunay surfaces and planes. Finally, we study some symmetry properties of these groups of surfaces
