General boundary conditions for the envelope function in multiband k.p model
We have derived general boundary conditions (BC) for the multiband envelope
functions (which do not contain spurious solutions) in semiconductor
heterostructures with abrupt heterointerfaces. These BC require the
conservation of the probability flux density normal to the interface and
guarantee that the multiband Hamiltonian be self--adjoint. The BC are energy
independent and are characteristic properties of the interface. Calculations
have been performed of the effect of the general BC on the electron energy
levels in a potential well with infinite potential barriers using a coupled two
band model. The connection with other approaches to determining BC for the
envelope function and to the spurious solution problem in the multiband k.p

Comparison of residual oil cluster size distribution, morphology and saturation in oil-wet and water-wet sandstone
We imaged an oil-wet sandstone at residual oil saturation (Sor) conditions using X-ray micro-tomography with a nominal voxel size of (9 μm)3 and monochromatic light from a synchrotron source. The sandstone was rendered oil-wet by ageing with a North Sea crude oil to represent a typical wettability encountered in hydrocarbon reservoirs. We measured a significantly lower Sor for the oil-wet core (18.8%) than for an analogue water-wet core (35%). We analysed the residual oil cluster size distribution and find consistency with percolation theory that predicts a power-law cluster size distribution. We measure a power-law exponent τ = 2.12 for the oil-wet core which is higher than τ for the water-wet system (τ = 2.05), indicating fewer large clusters in the oil-wet case. The clusters are rough and sheet-like consistent with connectivity established through layers in the pore space and occupancy of the smaller pores; in contrast the clusters for water-wet media occupy the centres of the larger pores. These results imply less trapping of oil, but with a greater surface area for dissolution. In carbon storage applications, this suggests that in CO2-wet systems, capillary trapping is less significant, but that there is a large surface area for dissolution and reaction
First measurement of direct photoproduction on the proton
We report on the results of the first measurement of exclusive
meson photoproduction on protons for GeV and GeV. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas
Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The resonance was detected via its
decay in the channel by performing a partial wave analysis of the
reaction . Clear evidence of the meson
was found in the interference between and waves at GeV. The -wave differential cross section integrated in the mass range of
the was found to be a factor of 50 smaller than the cross section
for the meson. This is the first time the meson has been
measured in a photoproduction experiment
Mad3 KEN Boxes Mediate both Cdc20 and Mad3 Turnover, and Are Critical for the Spindle Checkpoint
Mitotic progression is controlled by proteolytic destruction of securin and cyclin. The mitotic E3 ubiquitin ligase, known as the anaphase promoting complex or cyclosome (APC/C), in partnership with its activators Cdc20p and Cdh1p, targets these proteins for degradation. In the presence of defective kinetochore-microtubule interactions, APC/C(Cdc20) is inhibited by the spindle checkpoint, thereby delaying anaphase onset and providing more time for spindle assembly. Cdc20p interacts directly with Mad2p, and its levels are subject to careful regulation, but the precise mode(s) of APC/C( Cdc20) inhibition remain unclear. The mitotic checkpoint complex (MCC, consisting of Mad3p, Mad2p, Bub3p and Cdc20p in budding yeast) is a potent APC/C inhibitor. Here we focus on Mad3p and how it acts, in concert with Mad2p, to efficiently inhibit Cdc20p. We identify and analyse the function of two motifs in Mad3p, KEN30 and KEN296, which are conserved from yeast Mad3p to human BubR1. These KEN amino acid sequences resemble ‘degron’ signals that confer interaction with APC/C activators and target proteins for degradation. We show that both Mad3p KEN boxes are necessary for spindle checkpoint function. Mutation of KEN30 abolished MCC formation and stabilised Cdc20p in mitosis. In addition, mutation of Mad3-KEN30, APC/C subunits, or Cdh1p, stabilised Mad3p in G1, indicating that the N-terminal KEN box could be a Mad3p degron. To determine the significance of Mad3p turnover, we analysed the consequences of MAD3 overexpression and found that four-fold overproduction of Mad3p led to chromosome bi-orientation defects and significant chromosome loss during recovery from anti-microtubule drug induced checkpoint arrest. In conclusion, Mad3p KEN30 mediates interactions that regulate the proteolytic turnover of Cdc20p and Mad3p, and the levels of both of these proteins are critical for spindle checkpoint signaling and high fidelity chromosome segregation
Representational predicaments for employees: Their impact on perceptions of supervisors\u27 individualized consideration and on employee job satisfaction
A representational predicament for a subordinate vis-à-vis his or her immediate superior involves perceptual incongruence with the superior about the subordinate\u27s work or work context, with unfavourable implications for the employee. An instrument to measure the incidence of two types of representational predicament, being neglected and negative slanting, was developed and then validated through an initial survey of 327 employees. A subsequent substantive survey with a fresh sample of 330 employees largely supported a conceptual model linking being neglected and negative slanting to perceptions of low individualized consideration by superiors and to low overall job satisfaction. The respondents in both surveys were all Hong Kong Chinese. Two case examples drawn from qualitative interviews illustrate and support the conceptual model. Based on the research findings, we recommend some practical exercises to use in training interventions with leaders and subordinates. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
Evidence for the Onset of Color Transparency in Electroproduction off Nuclei
We have measured the nuclear transparency of the incoherent diffractive
process in C and Fe targets relative to H
using a 5 GeV electron beam. The nuclear transparency, the ratio of the
produced 's on a nucleus relative to deuterium, which is sensitive to
interaction, was studied as function of the coherence length (),
a lifetime of the hadronic fluctuation of the virtual photon, and the
four-momentum transfer squared (). While the transparency for both
C and Fe showed no dependence, a significant
dependence was measured, which is consistent with calculations that included
the color transparency effects.Comment: 6 pages and 4 figure
Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering Beam-Spin Asymmetries
The beam spin asymmetries in the hard exclusive electroproduction of photons
on the proton (ep -> epg) were measured over a wide kinematic range and with
high statistical accuracy. These asymmetries result from the interference of
the Bethe-Heitler process and of deeply virtual Compton scattering. Over the
whole kinematic range (x_B from 0.11 to 0.58, Q^2 from 1 to 4.8 GeV^2, -t from
0.09 to 1.8 GeV^2), the azimuthal dependence of the asymmetries is compatible
with expectations from leading-twist dominance, A = a*sin(phi)/[1+c*cos(phi)].
This extensive set of data can thus be used to constrain significantly the
generalized parton distributions of the nucleon in the valence quark sector.Comment: 1 tex file (6 pages), 4 (eps) figure
Beam Spin Asymmetries in DVCS with CLAS at 4 .8 GeV
We report measurements of the beam spin asymmetry in Deeply Virtual Compton
Scattering (DVCS) at an electron beam energy of 4.8 GeV using the CLAS detector
at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The DVCS beam spin
asymmetry has been measured in a wide range of kinematics, 1(GeV/c)
(GeV/c), , and 0.1 (GeV/c)
(GeV/c), using the reaction \pEpX. The number of
H and H events are separated in
each bin by a fit to the line shape of the H
distribution. The validity of the method was studied in detail using
experimental and simulated data. It was shown, that with the achieved missing
mass squared resolution and the available statistics, the separation of DVCS-BH
and events can reliably be done with less than 5% uncertainty. The
- and -dependences of the moments of the asymmetry are
extracted and compared with theoretical calculations
