Effect of Different Parameters (Treatment Administration Mode, Concentration and Phenological Weed Stage) on Thymbra capitata L. Essential Oil Herbicidal Activity
The essential oil (EO) of Thymbra capitata has been demonstrated to possess herbicidal activity and could be used as an alternative to synthetic herbicides with reduced persistence in soil and new mode of action. Nevertheless, it is necessary to determine the adequate doses for its use, the proper way for its application and the best phenological stage of weeds and crops in which the EO should be applied to obtain maximum efficacy against weeds without compromising crop production. In this work, T. capitata EO was tested at three different concentrations against weeds grown from a citrus orchard soil seedbank untreated with herbicides and against three important weed species grown in substrate to determine the efficacy of the concentrations on different weed species. All experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions. To find out the best way for applying the EO, it was applied by irrigation and by spraying on the targeted weeds, and to verify the influence of timing, it was tested on Lolium rigidum at two different phenological stages and on wheat at a later phenological stage than weeds. The highest concentration tested (12 μL·mL−1) showed the best performance to control weeds. The more effective mode of application was by spraying on dicotyledons and by irrigation on monocotyledons at the earliest phenological stage. T. capitata EO was phytotoxic for wheat. More trials in different crops are needed to determine the best conditions for its use
Herbicidal Potential of the Natural Compounds Carvacrol, Thymol, Eugenol, p-Cymene, Citral and Pelargonic Acid in Field Conditions: Indications for Better Performance
In recent years, interest in natural products with herbicidal activity as new tools for integrated weed management has increased. The European Union is demanding a reduction in the number of herbicides used, forbidding use of the most toxic ones, despite the problem of weed resistance increasing. Pelargonic acid (PA) is the only natural herbicide available in Spain. In this work, two field assays were performed with the natural compounds carvacrol (CAR), citral (CIT), eugenol (EUG), thymol (THY), p-cymene (P-CYM), (PA), and the combination of PA with CIT-all except P-CYM formulated by Seipasa-to test their herbicidal efficacy in real conditions. They were compared with commercial PA, glyphosate (GLY) and oxyfluorfen (OXY). In both experiments, GLY achieved the best weed control. Considering the natural herbicides, PA formulated by Seipasa and PA plus CIT were the most effective. From both experiments, some conclusions can be extracted for better herbicidal performance of natural products: (1) use products on sensitive weed species, (2) treat weeds at earlier phenological stages, (3) find the active doses in field conditions, (4) cover weeds well when treating, (5) ensure adequate formulation of products, and (6) develop a strategy for correct application
Reactivation of Paleozoic structures during Cenozoic deformation in the Cordón del Plata and Southern Precordillera ranges (Mendoza, Argentina)
The tectonic style of the eastern morphostructural units of the Central Andes between 32°20´ and 33°20´S is strongly influenced by pre- Andean structures, especially those developed during the late Carboniferous-Early Permian San Rafael orogeny of the Gondwanan orogenic cycle. Moreover, in the study area pre-Carboniferous rocks were deformed in Late Devonian-early Carboniferous times by the Chanic orogeny. In this paper we argue that the Cordón del Plata and the Southern Precordillera ranges, first order features of the eastern ranges of the Andes, have been shaped in large part by the Permian event. Our data suggest that the double verging character of the Andean Precordillera fold- thrust belt is mainly the result of the reactivation of Gondwanan structures which conform a fold-thrust belt with distinct characteristics north and south of 33°S. The northern sector of this belt corresponds to a bivergent system, while the southern sector had a widespread east vergence. The vergence of the Chanic structures is more difficult to determine, but we infer a westward vergence in the Frontal Cordillera and western sector of Precordillera, and an eastern vergence in the eastern sector of the Precordillera. The sharp disappearance of the Precordillera morphostructural unit south of 33°S is inferred here to be related to the distribution of inherited Permian structures.El estilo tectónico del sector oriental de las unidades morfoestructurales de los Andes Centrales entre los 32°20´y 33°20´S se encuentra fuertemente influenciado por estructuras pre-andinas, especialmente aquellas desarrolladas durante el Carbonífero superior-Pérmico Inferior y asociadas al orógeno San Rafael del ciclo orogénico Gondwánico. Además, en el área de estudio, las rocas pre-carboníferas se deformaron durante el Devónico Superior y Carbonífero inferior, en relación con la orogenia Chánica. En este trabajo discutimos los rasgos de primer orden del sector oriental de los Andes, que comprende al Cordón del Plata y a la Precordillera Austral, fueron en gran parte modelados a partir del evento pérmico. Nuestros datos sugieren que la doble vergencia de una faja plegada y corrida en la Precordillera Andina es el resultado principalmente de la reactivación de estructuras gondwánicas que conformaron una faja plegada y corrida con características distintivas al norte y sur de los 33°S. El sector norte de la faja corresponde a un sistema bivergente, mientras que el sector sur posee una vergencia predominantemente oriental. La vergencia de las estructuras chánicas es más difícil de predecir, pero se sugiere aquí una vergencia hacia el oeste para las estructuras de la Cordillera Frontal y el sector occidental de la Precordillera y otra hacia el este para las estructuras del sector oriental de la Precordillera. Se infiere que la marcada desaparición de la Precordillera como unidad morfoestructural andina al sur de los 33° está relacionada a la distribución de estructuras chánicas y gondwánicas
Dietary Fat Patterns and Outcomes in Acute Pancreatitis in Spain
Background/Objective: Evidence from basic and clinical studies suggests that unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) might be relevant mediators of the development of complications in acute pancreatitis (AP). Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze outcomes in patients with AP from regions in Spain with different patterns of dietary fat intake.
Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed with data from 1,655 patients with AP from a Spanish prospective cohort study and regional nutritional data from a Spanish cross-sectional study. Nutritional data considered in the study concern the total lipid consumption, detailing total saturated fatty acids, UFAs and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) consumption derived from regional data and not from the patient prospective cohort. Two multivariable analysis models were used: (1) a model with the Charlson comorbidity index, sex, alcoholic etiology, and recurrent AP; (2) a model that included these variables plus obesity.
Results: In multivariable analysis, patients from regions with high UFA intake had a significantly increased frequency of local complications, persistent organ failure (POF), mortality, and moderate-to-severe disease in the model without obesity and a higher frequency of POF in the model with obesity. Patients from regions with high MUFA intake had significantly more local complications and moderate-to-severe disease; this significance remained for moderate-to-severe disease when obesity was added to the model.
Conclusions: Differences in dietary fat patterns could be associated with different outcomes in AP, and dietary fat patterns may be a pre-morbid factor that determines the severity of AP. UFAs, and particulary MUFAs, may influence the pathogenesis of the severity of AP

The observed winter circulation at InSight’s landing site and its impact on understanding the year-round circulation and aeolian activity in Elysium Planitia and Gale Crater
The InSight lander landed at 135.62°E, 4.50°N in Elysium Planitia, less than 550km from the landing site of the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover, at 137.44°E, 4.59°S in Gale Crater. Both missions carried a suite of meteorological instruments, but regrettably MSL’s wind sensor was damaged on landing and failed completely after ~two Mars years [1]. The resultant data gaps and biases made it very difficult to properly characterize the diurnal and seasonal cycles of wind speed and direction in Gale Crater, a region of extreme topography containing numerous aeolian features.
Fortunately, InSight’s wind sensor does not appear to have been damaged on landing, and is returning excellent wind data for the landing season (Ls~300°, northern winter). This valuable dataset has already allowed us to characterize the Elysium Planitia circulation at one time of year, and - in combination with atmospheric models - provides vital insight into what controls the circulation in this region of Mars. In turn, this better understanding of the regional circulation allows us to better interpret the local scale winds partially measured by MSL
Antihyperthermic treatment decreases perihematomal hypodensity
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect on perihematomal hypodensity and outcome of a decrease in body temperature in the first 24 hours in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). METHODS: In this retrospective study on a prospectively registered database, among the 1,100 patients, 795 met all the inclusion criteria. Temperature variations in the first 24 hours and perihematomal hypodensity (PHHD) were recorded. Patients >/=37.5 degrees C were treated with antihyperthermic drugs for at least 48 hours. The main objective was to determine the association among temperature variation, PHHD, and outcome at 3 months. RESULTS: The decrease in temperature in the first 24 hours increased the possibility of good outcome 11-fold. Temperature decrease, lower PHHD volume, and a good outcome were observed in 31.8% of the patients who received antihyperthermic treatment. CONCLUSION: The administration of early antihyperthermic treatment in patients with spontaneous ICH with a basal axillary temperature >/=37.5 degrees C resulted in good outcome in a third of the treated patients
Influence of Sex on Stroke Prognosis: A Demographic, Clinical, and Molecular Analysis
Identifying the complexities of the effect of sex on stroke risk, etiology, and lesion progression may lead to advances in the treatment and care of ischemic stroke (IS) and non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage patients (ICH). We studied the sex-related discrepancies on the clinical course of patients with IS and ICH, and we also evaluated possible molecular mechanisms involved. The study's main variable was the patient's functional outcome at 3-months. Logistic regression models were used in order to study the influence of sex on different inflammatory, endothelial and atrial dysfunction markers. We recruited 5,021 patients; 4,060 IS (54.8% male, 45.2% female) and 961 ICH (57.1% male, 42.9% female). Women were on average 5.7 years older than men (6.4 years in IS, 5.1 years in ICH), and more likely to have previous poor functional status, to suffer atrial fibrillation and to be on anticoagulants. IS patients showed sex-related differences at 3-months regarding poorer outcome (55.6% women, 43.6% men, p < 0.0001), but this relationship was not found in ICH (56.8% vs. 61.9%, p = 0.127). In IS, women had higher levels of NT-proBNP and 3-months worse outcome in both cardioembolic and non-cardioembolic stroke patients. Stroke patients showed sex-related differences in pre-hospital data, clinical variables and molecular markers, but only IS patients presented independent sex-related differences in 3-months poor outcome and mortality. There was a relationship between the molecular marker of atrial dysfunction NT-proBNP and worse functional outcome in women, resulting in a possible indicator of increased dysfunction
Intra- and extra-hospital improvement in ischemic stroke patients: influence of reperfusion therapy and molecular mechanisms
Neuroprotective treatments in ischemic stroke are focused to reduce the pernicious effect of excitotoxicity, oxidative stress and inflammation. However, those cellular and molecular mechanisms may also have beneficial effects, especially during the late stages of the ischemic stroke. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the clinical improvement of ischemic stroke patients and the time-dependent excitotoxicity and inflammation. We included 4295 ischemic stroke patients in a retrospective study. The main outcomes were intra and extra-hospital improvement. High glutamate and IL-6 levels at 24 hours were associated with a worse intra-hospital improvement (OR:0.993, 95%CI: 0.990-0.996 and OR:0.990, 95%CI: 0.985-0.995). High glutamate and IL-6 levels at 24 hours were associated with better extra-hospital improvement (OR:1.13 95%CI, 1.07-1.12 and OR:1.14, 95%CI, 1.09-1.18). Effective reperfusion after recanalization showed the best clinical outcome. However, the long term recovery is less marked in patients with an effective reperfusion. The variations of glutamate and IL6 levels in the first 24 hours clearly showed a relationship between the molecular components of the ischemic cascade and the clinical outcome of patients. Our findings suggest that the rapid reperfusion after recanalization treatment blocks the molecular response to ischemia that is associated with restorative processes
