Our main goal was to identify the attitudes of nursing students to cultural diversity in a healthcare setting, and find the potential relationship between this and the students' national background and their knowledge of cultural diversity. A descriptive observational study comparing two culturally different populations within a cross-border area (Algarve-Huelva) was conducted. The attitudes of the participants were measured across six categories: this study will describe the most significant ones. The cultural context is essential to the development of attitudes to immigration. Nursing care is a communicative act and encountering the "other" the core of the nursing professionals' work. Land use/cover classification is one of the most important applications in remote sensing. However, mapping accurate land use/cover spatial distribution is a challenge, particularly in moist tropical regions, due to the complex biophysical environment and limitations of remote sensing data per se. This paper reviews experiments related to land use/cover classification in the Brazilian Amazon for a decade. Through comprehensive analysis of the classification results, it is concluded that spatial information inherent in remote sensing data plays an essential role in improving land use/cover classification. Incorporation of suitable textural images into multispectral bands and use of segmentation?based method are valuable ways to improve land use/cover classification, especially for high spatial resolution images. Data fusion of multi?resolution images within optical sensor data is vital for visual interpretation, but may not improve classification performance. In contrast, integration of optical and radar data did improve classification performance when the proper data fusion method was used. Of the classification algorithms available, the maximum likelihood classifier is still an important method for providing reasonably good accuracy, but nonparametric algorithms, such as classification tree analysis, has the potential to provide better results. However, they often require more time to achieve parametric optimization. Proper use of hierarchical?based methods is fundamental for developing accurate land use/cover classification, mainly from historical remotely sensed data

Euclidean Correlation Functions in a Holographic Model of QCD

We compute euclidean coordinate space correlation functions in a holographic model of QCD. We concentrate, in particular, on channels that are related to the U(1)_A problem, the flavor-singlet axialvector, pseudoscalar meson, and pseudoscalar glueball (topological charge) correlator. We find that even a very simple holographic model defined on a slice of AdS_5 provides a qualitatively correct description of QCD correlation functions. We study the role of anomaly terms, and show that both euclidean positivity and low energy theorems based on the axial anomaly relation are correctly implemented. We compare the results with expectations from an instanton model of the QCD vacuum.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, minor changes (references added), to appear in Phys Rev

    Get PDF
A theory of surface effects at stepped surfaces in binary ordering alloys is presented. The model is based on pairwise interactions between nearest neighbors and includes long- and short-range-order effects. An example of the [120] stepped surface with [110] monoatomic steps and terraces on the [110] plane of a body-centered-cubic alloy is presented. Results for the concentration at all the different sites on the stepped surface as well as for the short-range order parameters as functions of temperature are presented. © 1981 The American Physical Society.2362752275

the coagulation factors VIII (FVIII) or IX (FIX), respectively. The primary therapeutic approach is to replace the deficient coagulation factor, which can be achieved with factors derived from human plasma or recombinants. However, despite having a therapeutic approach, most severe cases are symptomatic and may have complications, mainly in the muscles and joints. One example of such disorder is hemarthrosis. This manifestation tends to affect mainly the knee, ankle, or elbow joints in about 80% of cases. Objective: to describe the primary forms of treatment for joint bleeding in patients with severe hemophilia. Methods: This is a qualitative research of the integrative review type meant to identify productions on topics associated with hemarthrosis and severe hemophilia. The articles were searched through the databases PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and Virtual Health Library (BVS) with the following search descriptors: “hemarthrosis andhemophilia”; “joint diseases and Hemophilia” and corresponding terms in Portuguese. The inclusion criteria were as follows:a) scientific articles b) available in full-text c) studies available in Portuguese, English, or Spanish d) randomized clinical trials e) articles published between 2016 and 2021 f) articles containing hemarthrosis caused by severe hemophilia. As exclusion criteria, texts that had no relation to the theme, did not answer the guiding question, other types of articles that did not include randomized clinical trials and/or presented duplicates were discarded. Results: In total, 42 articles were found in the selected databases; eight were duplicated, and 25 were excluded for not being randomized clinical trials or because they did not contemplate the theme. After careful reading, nine articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were identified. Of the eligible studies, one reported factor replacement, and eight reported physiotherapeutic treatment. Conclusion: Factor replacement for hemophilic patients is essential and, based on the information obtained, early replacement is beneficial for the patient to avoid joint complications. Prophylaxis is indicated in severe hemophilia and its main objective is to prevent recurrent hemarthrosis, which can cause permanent functional deformities. Some physiotherapeutic interventions are indicated to prevent joint damage in severe hemophilic patients. The findings show diversity in the physical therapy modalities employed. The complete prevention of joint damage is still a challenge. A combination of treatments and a multidisciplinary team follow-up is necessary to ensure health and quality of life of patients.

Objective: This article aims to assess the effect of transcutaneous electrical stimulation or ultrasound therapy in the treatment of post-mastectomy upper limb lymphedema. Method: A systematic literature review was performed from 1980 to 2012 from the MedLine, Cochrane Library, LILACS and SciELO databases. The terms used in the search were (breast neoplasm OR breast cancer OR lymphedema) and (hyperthermia, induced OR diathermy OR ultrasonic therapy OR ultrasound OR transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation OR TENS). The selections of the studies concerned female patients with post-mastectomy upper limb lymphedema who underwent diathermy by ultrasound therapy and transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation. Only randomized (RCT) and quasi-randomized study designs were included (both Narrow and Broad Therapy). Only studies published in the full paper format were included. After reviewing the 2,158 abstracts resulting from the search, only two papers were selected. Two researchers analyzed the two articles, using the Van Tulder and JADAD scales for quality assessment. Results: Both papers evaluated the use of ultrasound therapy and electric stimulation for treatment of post-mastectomy lymphedema. A total of 132 subjects were included in these two studies, and little improvement was observed in pain reduction or quality of life. Only the study using ultrasound therapy identified a small reduction in lymphedema symptoms; however, evidence supporting the application of this method is lacking. Conclusion: Further studies are needed to evaluate the use of ultrasound therapy or electrotherapy for treatment of post-mastectomy lymphedema and to evaluate the potential effect of these therapies on later development of metastatic disease.

Coexisting conical bipolar and equatorial outflows from a high-mass protostar

The BN/KL region in the Orion molecular cloud is an archetype in the study of the formation of stars much more massive than the Sun. This region contains luminous young stars and protostars, but it is difficult to study because of overlying dust and gas. Our basic expectations are shaped to some extent by the present theoretical picture of star formation, the cornerstone of which is that protostars acrete gas from rotating equatorial disks, and shed angular momentum by ejecting gas in bipolar outflows. The main source of the outflow in the BN/KL region may be an object known as radio source I, which is commonly believed to be surrounded by a rotating disk of molecular material. Here we report high-resolution observations of silicon monoxide (SiO) and water maser emission from the gas surrounding source I; we show that within 60 AU (about the size of the Solar System), the region is dominated by a conical bipolar outflow, rather than the expected disk. A slower outflow, close to the equatorial plane of the protostellar system, extends to radii of 1,000 AU.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. Accepted by Nature. To appear December 199

Testing for Network and Spatial Autocorrelation

Testing for dependence has been a well-established component of spatial statistical analyses for decades. In particular, several popular test statistics have desirable properties for testing for the presence of spatial autocorrelation in continuous variables. In this paper we propose two contributions to the literature on tests for autocorrelation. First, we propose a new test for autocorrelation in categorical variables. While some methods currently exist for assessing spatial autocorrelation in categorical variables, the most popular method is unwieldy, somewhat ad hoc, and fails to provide grounds for a single omnibus test. Second, we discuss the importance of testing for autocorrelation in data sampled from the nodes of a network, motivated by social network applications. We demonstrate that our proposed statistic for categorical variables can both be used in the spatial and network setting
