    [EN] This volume in the prestigious Linguistic Insights book series (Peter Lang) fills an acknowledged lacuna in studies considering the tourism research article from a gender perspective. Indeed, the attention paid to the tourism research article (RA) has been, if anything, fragmentary, since, as noted in Lin and Evans (2012), no attempt has been made to fully outline the generic structure of the RA in tourism. This is precisely one of the focuses of interest of this monograph, which aims to provide genre scholars and language professionals with an outline of the genre pattern of the RA and the lexicogrammatical choices associated with each generic section, together with a detailed description of the specific stance-taking devices. This is really the main aim of this book, as its title expressly calls for. Much of the information presented in this monograph, as attributed therein, belongs to a major research project conducted over the years on the language of tourism in English and other languages (cf.     El presente estudio explora las diversas formas de violencia que se dan entre las y los estudiantes del sexto grado “A” de la Escuela Rubén Darío del municipio de Estelí, y como las actitudes de niñas y niños se corresponden con la influencia de los diferentes medios de comunicación y espacios sociales, a si como el contexto familiar, pero sobre todo con la imitación entre el mismo grupo de compañeras /os de clase, como lo que ven en los diferentes espacios donde estos tiene presencia. A partir de la aplicación de instrumentos como observación, encuestas, entrevistas y grupo focal con los y las estudiantes de este grado, como con la docente y consejera del centro, recopilamos información que nos llevó a identificar los tipos de violencia y las diferentes formas en que esta se manifiesta, así como algunas de las causas que llevan a los estudiantes a tomar ciertas actitudes violentas, además de las consecuencias que estas traen en su aspecto físico, psicológico y emocional, evidenciando que la violencia está dirigida desde lo interno del aula de clase, con la formación de un grupo de estudiantes con las mismas características (inquietos, burlescos, agresivos, etc.) Los que de una u otra manera violentan los derechos de algunos/as niños y niñas que se sienten, excluidos, discriminado/as, agredidos/as ante las actitudes que este grupo toma hacia ellos/as, por lo que prefieren aislarse o actuar de forma pasiva para evitar ser objetos de burlas, amenazas u otros daños

    Dialogues Between First-Generation Mexican American Female Students in Higher Education and their Parents

    First-generation female Mexican American students are part of the growing Latinx population of students entering American college campuses all over the country. They are students who have had to jump over several obstacles such as traditional gender roles and structures of inequality to attend university on their own. But they are not fully alone. Loyalty to family is a central core value many Mexican American women believe in, making family an integral part of their journey in higher education. Additionally, traditional gender roles, in conjunction with family, play a part in the responsibilities they take at home with their families. These affect their decision-making in regard to their education and path to adulthood. To this extent, this study uses the qualitative method of interviews to examine how first-generation Mexican American female students in higher education communicate with their immigrant parents as they attended university. By interviewing three parent-daughter pairs individually, this study gives insight into how parents and students learned to navigate university alongside each other. Students and parents reported their experiences with regard to their relationships, family obligations, and access to resources that would facilitate understanding this change. Findings suggest that students use their parent’s lived experiences to inform their decision-making in attending college while parents reflect on their lived experiences and open communication to understand the changes that occur with their daughter going to college. Additionally, findings reflect on how family and obligations are an important aspect of how students maintain and shape their relationships with their parents

    Sound Recognition System Using Spiking and MLP Neural Networks

    In this paper, we explore the capabilities of a sound classification system that combines a Neuromorphic Auditory System for feature extraction and an artificial neural network for classification. Two models of neural network have been used: Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network and Spiking Neural Network. To compare their accuracies, both networks have been developed and trained to recognize pure tones in presence of white noise. The spiking neural network has been implemented in a FPGA device. The neuromorphic auditory system that is used in this work produces a form of representation that is analogous to the spike outputs of the biological cochlea. Both systems are able to distinguish the different sounds even in the presence of white noise. The recognition system based in a spiking neural networks has better accuracy, above 91 %, even when the sound has white noise with the same power.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2012-37868-C04-02Junta de Andalucía P12-TIC-130

    Performance Evaluation of Neural Networks for Animal Behaviors Classification: Horse Gaits Case Study

    The study and monitoring of wildlife has always been a subject of great interest. Studying the behavior of wildlife animals is a very complex task due to the difficulties to track them and classify their behaviors through the collected sensory information. Novel technology allows designing low cost systems that facilitate these tasks. There are currently some commercial solutions to this problem; however, it is not possible to obtain a highly accurate classification due to the lack of gathered information. In this work, we propose an animal behavior recognition, classification and monitoring system based on a smart collar device provided with inertial sensors and a feed-forward neural network or Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) to classify the possible animal behavior based on the collected sensory information. Experimental results over horse gaits case study show that the recognition system achieves an accuracy of up to 95.6%.Junta de Andalucía P12-TIC-130

    DsbA and MgrB regulate steA expression through the two-component system PhoQ/PhoP in Salmonella enterica.

    SteA is a protein that can be translocated into host cells through the two virulence-related type III secretion systems that are present in Salmonella enterica. We used the T-POP system to carry out general screens for loci that exhibited activation or repression of a steA::lacZ fusion. These screens identified the histidine kinase PhoQ and the response regulator PhoP as positive regulators of steA. Transcription of this gene is σ70 dependent, and the promoter of steA contains a PhoP-binding site that mediates direct regulation by PhoP. Our screens also detected MgrB (also known as YobG) as a negative regulator of the expression of steA. Disruption of the gene encoding the periplasmic disulfide oxidoreductase DsbA or addition of the reducing agent dithiothreitol increases transcription of steA. The effects of MgrB and DsbA on steA are mediated by PhoP. These results suggest that the cellular redox status is a factor contributing to regulation of steA and, probably, other virulence genes regulated by the PhoQ/PhoP two-component syste

    Embedded neural network for real-time animal behavior classification

    Recent biological studies have focused on understanding animal interactions and welfare. To help biolo- gists to obtain animals’ behavior information, resources like wireless sensor networks are needed. More- over, large amounts of obtained data have to be processed off-line in order to classify different behaviors.There are recent research projects focused on designing monitoring systems capable of measuring someanimals’ parameters in order to recognize and monitor their gaits or behaviors. However, network unre- liability and high power consumption have limited their applicability.In this work, we present an animal behavior recognition, classification and monitoring system based ona wireless sensor network and a smart collar device, provided with inertial sensors and an embeddedmulti-layer perceptron-based feed-forward neural network, to classify the different gaits or behaviorsbased on the collected information. In similar works, classification mechanisms are implemented in aserver (or base station). The main novelty of this work is the full implementation of a reconfigurableneural network embedded into the animal’s collar, which allows a real-time behavior classification andenables its local storage in SD memory. Moreover, this approach reduces the amount of data transmittedto the base station (and its periodicity), achieving a significantly improving battery life. The system hasbeen simulated and tested in a real scenario for three different horse gaits, using different heuristics andsensors to improve the accuracy of behavior recognition, achieving a maximum of 81%.Junta de Andalucía P12-TIC-130
