    White Dwarfs In Ngc6397 And M4: Constraints On The Physics Of Crystallization

    We explore the physics of crystallization in the dense Coulomb plasma of the deep interiors of white dwarf stars using the color-magnitude diagram and luminosity function constructed from Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the globular cluster M 4 and compare it with our results for proper motion cleaned Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the globular cluster NGC 6397. We demonstrate that the data are consistent with a binary mixture of carbon and oxygen crystallizing at a value of Gamma higher than the theoretical value for a One Component Plasma (OCP). We show that this result is in line with the latest Molecular Dynamics simulations for binary mixtures of C/O. We discuss implications for future work.Astronom

    Follow-up Observations of the Second and Third Known Pulsating Hot DQ White Dwarfs

    We present follow-up time-series photometric observations that confirm and extend the results of the significant discovery made by Barlow et al.(2008) that the Hot DQ white dwarfs SDSS J220029.08-074121.5 and SDSS J234843.30-094245.3 are luminosity variable. These are the second and third known members of a new class of pulsating white dwarfs, after the prototype SDSS J142625.71+575218.3 (Montgomery et al. 2008). We find that the light curve of SDSS J220029.08-074121.5 is dominated by an oscillation at 654.397+-0.056 s, and that the light pulse folded on that period is highly nonlinear due to the presence of the first and second harmonic of the main pulsation. We also present evidence for the possible detection of two additional pulsation modes with low amplitudes and periods of 577.576+-0.226 s and 254.732+-0.048 s in that star. Likewise, we find that the light curve of SDSS J234843.30-094245.3 is dominated by a pulsation with a period of 1044.168+-0.012 s, but with no sign of harmonic components. A new oscillation, with a low amplitude and a period of 416.919+-0.004 s, is also probably detected in that second star. We argue, on the basis of the very different folded pulse shapes, that SDSS J220029.08-074121.5 is likely magnetic, while SDSS J234843.30-094245.3 is probably not.Comment: 12 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Techniques are described to allow operation of discrete, solid state detectors at 4 K with optimized JFET amplifiers. Three detector types cover the 0.6 to 4 mm spectral range with NEP approximately equal to 10 to the 16th power Hz (-1/2) for two of the types and potential improvement to this performance for the third. Lower NEP's are anticipated at longer infrared wavelengths

    Follow-up Studies of the Pulsating Magnetic White Dwarf SDSS J142625.71+575218.3

    We present a follow-up analysis of the unique magnetic luminosity-variable carbon-atmosphere white dwarf SDSS J142625.71+575218.3. This includes the results of some 106.4 h of integrated light photometry which have revealed, among other things, the presence of a new periodicity at 319.720 s which is not harmonically related to the dominant oscillation (417.707 s) previously known in that star. Using our photometry and available spectroscopy, we consider the suggestion made by Montgomery et al. (2008) that the luminosity variations in SDSS J142625.71+575218.3 may not be caused by pulsational instabilities, but rather by photometric activity in a carbon-transferring analog of AM CVn. This includes a detailed search for possible radial velocity variations due to rapid orbital motion on the basis of MMT spectroscopy. At the end of the exercise, we unequivocally rule out the interacting binary hypothesis and conclude instead that, indeed, the luminosity variations are caused by g-mode pulsations as in other pulsating white dwarfs.     Destroying Aliases from the Ground and Space: Super-Nyquist ZZ Cetis in K2 Long Cadence Data

    With typical periods of order 10 minutes, the pulsation signatures of ZZ Ceti variables (pulsating hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarf stars) are severely undersampled by long-cadence (29.42 minutes per exposure) K2 observations. Nyquist aliasing renders the intrinsic frequencies ambiguous, stifling precision asteroseismology. We report the discovery of two new ZZ Cetis in long-cadence K2 data: EPIC 210377280 and EPIC 220274129. Guided by 3-4 nights of follow-up, high-speed (<=30 s) photometry from McDonald Observatory, we recover accurate pulsation frequencies for K2 signals that reflected 4-5 times off the Nyquist with the full precision of over 70 days of monitoring (~0.01 muHz). In turn, the K2 observations enable us to select the correct peaks from the alias structure of the ground-based signals caused by gaps in the observations. We identify at least seven independent pulsation modes in the light curves of each of these stars. For EPIC 220274129, we detect three complete sets of rotationally split ell=1 (dipole mode) triplets, which we use to asteroseismically infer the stellar rotation period of 12.7+/-1.3 hr. We also detect two sub-Nyquist K2 signals that are likely combination (difference) frequencies. We attribute our inability to match some of the K2 signals to the ground-based data to changes in pulsation amplitudes between epochs of observation. Model fits to SOAR spectroscopy place both EPIC 210377280 and EPIC 220274129 near the middle of the ZZ Ceti instability strip, with Teff = 11590+/-200 K and 11810+/-210 K, and masses 0.57+/-0.03 Msun and 0.62+/-0.03 Msun, respectively.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables; accepted for publication in Ap

    Freezing Transition, Characteristic Polynomials of Random Matrices, and the Riemann Zeta-Function

    We argue that the freezing transition scenario, previously explored in the statistical mechanics of 1/f-noise random energy models, also determines the value distribution of the maximum of the modulus of the characteristic polynomials of large N x N random unitary (CUE) matrices. We postulate that our results extend to the extreme values taken by the Riemann zeta-function zeta(s) over sections of the critical line s=1/2+it of constant length and present the results of numerical computations in support. Our main purpose is to draw attention to possible connections between the statistical mechanics of random energy landscapes, random matrix theory, and the theory of the Riemann zeta function.Comment: published version with a few misprints corrected and references adde

    Sleep Analytics and Online Selective Anomaly Detection

    We introduce a new problem, the Online Selective Anomaly Detection (OSAD), to model a specific scenario emerging from research in sleep science. Scientists have segmented sleep into several stages and stage two is characterized by two patterns (or anomalies) in the EEG time series recorded on sleep subjects. These two patterns are sleep spindle (SS) and K-complex. The OSAD problem was introduced to design a residual system, where all anomalies (known and unknown) are detected but the system only triggers an alarm when non-SS anomalies appear. The solution of the OSAD problem required us to combine techniques from both machine learning and control theory.
