Constructible sets are needed in many algorithms of Computer Algebra, particularly in the GröbnerCover and other algorithms for parametric polynomial systems. In this paper we review the canonical form ofconstructible sets and give algorithms for computing it.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Synthesis and Optimization of Novel Poly-(β-amino ester) Polymer for Gene-Delivery

    Get PDF
Gene delivery is one of the most promising methods to treat multiple diseases through the alteration of a genetic code to enhance or inhibit gene expression (NIH). The potential for gene delivery to be used as a treatment for cancerous cells is the beginning for advanced personalized healthcare. Current methods for cancer are costly, nonspecific, and come with major side effects that lowers quality of life in cancer patients. Previous studies have demonstrated Poly-(β-amino ester) (PBAE) to be biodegradable, non-toxic, and capable to deliver payloads in a targeted manner. For this study, PBAE was synthesized and characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Dynamic Light Scattering, and Zeta-Potential. Cell experiments were conducted to determine transfection efficiencies. Also, conjugation of PBAE with a cell nucleus penetrating peptide (WTAS) will be investigated to develop a more effective gene delivery system, composed of two nanocarriers. Specifically, focus is emphasized on the advancement of non-viral gene delivery systems that can have a general application towards resolving current barriers in gene therapy

The transition from local sociability to the international associative world: two cases compared, Évora- Madrid (1789-1929) The present analysis deals with the modifications that took place in questions of leisure during the coming of Liberalism in the XIX century and early XX century. It focuses on two cases in the Iberian Peninsula: Madrid, as a representation of an urban capital that changed from township to city; and Évora (Portugal), as an example of the capital of a rural province, Alentejo. In the process of modernization the former demolished its city walls, while the latter remained within the limits of its walls. Key words: Leisure, sociability, city walls, Évora, Madrid«CIDEHUS-UID/ HIS/00057/2013» e «POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007702»

Sociabilidad y Fraternidad. Influencias masónicas en la creación de círculos asociativos (1800-1850)

In 1800 freemasonry was quite widespread in Europe and also in Spain. It was a secret movement prosecuted by the absolutism. It was strongly linked with those principles of Liberalism, and those of the French Revolution: liberty, equality and fraternity. The so-called “spirit of sociability” was quite related with that of fraternity, which was an essential element for the freemasonry. In my opinion, the masonic ideas of fraternity and the structure supporting the union and friendship on their organizations were copied by the new casinos, clubs and athenaeums. Those were the new associations created in Spain since the 1830´s, which born with the Liberalism. As is shown here, related with the freemasonry, those circles promoted those ideas of fraternity by different ways. Firstly in their iconography: stamps, tokens and other symbols in different materials. Secondly: the principles written on their texts. Thirdly: their own normative structure, including the rhetorical norms in statutes, and also the real rules in quotidian life

"Moral Revenge of the Crowd” in the 1854 Revolution in Madrid

The 1854 revolution in Spain has been relatively little studied. Here we try to understand and explain the phenomenon from a Cultural History perspective. In 1854 Spain suffered several Progresist-cut revolutions which took place caused by an unsustainable situation: the Conservative groups (called moderates) had held power for ten years, with politics of its last years being a nest of corruption, ornamented with anti-constitutional nuances. The situation was worsened by a famine, which stimulated a military led revolution, followed by a popular uprising. This was successful in Madrid, and promptly extended from here to various Spanish provinces. This article analyses the attacks that took place against the Conservative power groups. Studies the war in the streets, looking for popular justice in a sort of moral revenge of the multitude (paraphrasing Edward P. Thompson’s expression), by selectively targeting the symbols of power. It takes into account the collective mentalities, the constructive processes leading to the representations of power, the systems leading to the resistance against it and the mobilisation of the masses, with the specific manner of assimilation Liberalism undertook to put popular justice in place. The result was the triumph of Liberalism, which would sustain power between 1854 and 1856 (progressive biennium), popular victory that transformed the way the power looked back to that revolution

Between 1810 and 1840 many new clubs were created all around Europe. Their principles, names and rules tend to speak (directly or indirectly) about the friendship and fraternity. We relate that social fact showed in the associations with the process of implementation of Politic Liberalism in Europe

Friends or Enemies? Spanish Captives in France, 1809-1814

The Napoleonic wars in certain countries have created common stereotypes. Predominantly, that one between the Spanish and French Nation has spread an image of absolute enmity of the French. If we study some examples deeply, particularly that of the elite prisoners who went to the next door country, we see how that hostility images are very different of the general image which is predominant on the official History
