    Contribution of windfarms to ancillary services

    International audienceIn the last décade, wind energy has expericnced a substantial growth in Europe with an increase in génération capaciiy from 2,5 GW in 1995 to 34 GW at (lie end of 2004 This incTease has raised new probîems and constraints which led System opéra tors, electric utilities, governments or regulatory boards to define lechnical requirements for the grid connection of wind farms and more generaily of distributed génération (DG) units. At flrst, the requirements for wind fanns were rather "soft" (at least softer than for other DG units) and were mainîy intended to limit the "disturbances" caused by wind energy on power quality and grid opération. But with the ever increasing developmenl of wind power, the impacts on the grids become more and more significant leading to the définition of more and more "scvcrc" requiremcnts, In parltcular, wind farms (WF) arc now more and more often askcd to provide some son of anciilary services such as contribution to voltage/réactive power control and rrequency/active power control. This paper focuscs on the possible provision of such anciilary services by wind faims. Regarcling réactive power and voltage contTOl:-Doubly-fed Induction GÊaerarors (DFIG) and Synchronous or Induction GeneratoTS with full power électron ics interfaces (SIG) can liave réactive power control capabilities (both in production and absorption) depending on the rating of their power electronics converters. Thèse capabilities {characterized by a fast dynamie respon.se) can be used to perform voltage control. Moreover, if required, extemal reactive power compensation device.s niay also be installed.-Classical Induction G encrât ors (OG) do not hâve such réactive power control capahilities and therefore require externat devices for reactive power and voltage control.-Simulations carried oui show that WFs with voltage control capabilîties can significantly sustaîn the network voltage in case of grid events and mus may efficiently support the power System stability.Regard ing frequency control: the resuits show that when the Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) is full y loaded (maximum active power génération], appre-priate use or the pitch control may enabic the WTG (DFIG, SIG or CIG) to contribute to frequency control. In case of partial toad. the contribution to frequency conlrol can be achieved either by "disoplimizing'" the wind energy conversion by mcans of aie pitch control. or by setting a non-optimal rotor speed for DFIG or SIG. However, a judicious way to use variable speed ge&eratCffS may also be looperate them as mertial flywheels

    The complexity of the Pk partition problem and related problems in bipartite graphs

    International audienceIn this paper, we continue the investigation made in [MT05] about the approximability of Pk partition problems, but focusing here on their complexity. Precisely, we aim at designing the frontier between polynomial and NP-complete versions of the Pk partition problem in bipartite graphs, according to both the constant k and the maximum degree of the input graph. We actually extend the obtained results to more general classes of problems, namely, the minimum k-path partition problem and the maximum Pk packing problem. Moreover, we propose some simple approximation algorithms for those problems

    Protective effects of angiopoietin-like 4 on cerebrovascular and functional damages in ischaemic stroke

    AIMS: Given the impact of vascular injuries and oedema on brain damage caused during stroke, vascular protection represents a major medical need. We hypothesized that angiopoietin-like 4 (ANGPTL4), a regulator of endothelial barrier integrity, might exert a protective effect during ischaemic stroke. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using a murine transient ischaemic stroke model, treatment with recombinant ANGPTL4 led to significantly decreased infarct size and improved behaviour. Quantitative characteristics of the vascular network (density and branchpoints) were preserved in ANGPTL4-treated mice. Integrity of tight and adherens junctions was also quantified and ANGPTL4-treated mice displayed increased VE-cadherin and claudin-5-positive areas. Brain oedema was thus significantly decreased in ANGPTL4-treated mice. In accordance, vascular damage and infarct severity were increased in angptl4-deficient mice thus providing genetic evidence that ANGPTL4 preserves brain tissue from ischaemia-induced alterations. Altogether, these data show that ANGPTL4 protects not only the global vascular network, but also interendothelial junctions and controls both deleterious inflammatory response and oedema. Mechanistically, ANGPTL4 counteracted VEGF signalling and thereby diminished Src-signalling downstream from VEGFR2. This led to decreased VEGFR2-VE-cadherin complex disruption, increased stability of junctions and thus increased endothelial cell barrier integrity of the cerebral microcirculation. In addition, ANGPTL4 prevented neuronal loss in the ischaemic area. CONCLUSION: These results, therefore, show ANGPTL4 counteracts the loss of vascular integrity in ischaemic stroke, by restricting Src kinase signalling downstream from VEGFR2. ANGPTL4 treatment thus reduces oedema, infarct size, neuronal loss, and improves mice behaviour. These results suggest that ANGPTL4 constitutes a relevant target for vasculoprotection and cerebral protection during stroke

    What are Employers Looking for in New Veterinary Graduates? A Content Analysis of UK Veterinary Job Advertisements

    As veterinary educators, we have a responsibility to ensure that our graduates are prepared for working life. Veterinary practices, like any other businesses, rely on good employees, and the implications of a poor match between newly employed veterinarian and employing practice could be extremely costly in terms of personal well-being and enjoyment of work as well as the time, financial, and goodwill costs of high staff turnover for the practice. Contemporary veterinary curricula encompass a range of teaching to complement the clinical content; including communication, teamwork, problem solving, and business skills, to support good practice and increase the employability of new graduates. Previous studies have examined the qualities required of early career veterinarians as viewed by educators, recent graduates, pet owners, and practitioners; however, nobody has previously constructed a picture of the employment market for new veterinary graduates by exploring the nature of its recruitment advertising. Three months of UK veterinary job advertisements were examined. Content analysis yielded 10 distinct characteristics desired by employers of early career veterinarians. The most common by far was “enthusiasm,” followed by an interest in a particular area of practice, being an “all-rounder” (i.e., having a broad range of skills), demonstrating good communication skills, teamwork, client care, and independence, as well as being caring, ambitious, and having high clinical standards. While several of these qualities are expected and are specifically taught in veterinary school, the dominance of “enthusiasm” as a specifically desired trait raises interesting questions about the characteristics of veterinary students who we are supporting, encouraging, or maybe even suppressing, during veterinary training

    An Introduction to Temporal Graphs: An Algorithmic Perspective

    A \emph{temporal graph} is, informally speaking, a graph that changes with time. When time is discrete and only the relationships between the participating entities may change and not the entities themselves, a temporal graph may be viewed as a sequence G1,G2,GlG_1,G_2\ldots,G_l of static graphs over the same (static) set of nodes VV. Though static graphs have been extensively studied, for their temporal generalization we are still far from having a concrete set of structural and algorithmic principles. Recent research shows that many graph properties and problems become radically different and usually substantially more difficult when an extra time dimension in added to them. Moreover, there is already a rich and rapidly growing set of modern systems and applications that can be naturally modeled and studied via temporal graphs. This, further motivates the need for the development of a temporal extension of graph theory. We survey here recent results on temporal graphs and temporal graph problems that have appeared in the Computer Science community

    Ellipticine cytotoxicity to cancer cell lines — a comparative study

    Ellipticine is a potent antineoplastic agent exhibiting multiple mechanisms of action. This anticancer agent should be considered a pro-drug, whose pharmacological efficiency and/or genotoxic side effects are dependent on its cytochrome P450 (CYP)- and/or peroxidase-mediated activation to species forming covalent DNA adducts. Ellipticine can also act as an inhibitor or inducer of biotransformation enzymes, thereby modulating its own metabolism leading to its genotoxic and pharmacological effects. Here, a comparison of the toxicity of ellipticine to human breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells, leukemia HL-60 and CCRF-CEM cells, neuroblastoma IMR-32, UKF-NB-3 and UKF-NB-4 cells and U87MG glioblastoma cells and mechanisms of its action to these cells were evaluated. Treatment of all cells tested with ellipticine resulted in inhibition of cell growth and proliferation. This effect was associated with formation of two covalent ellipticine-derived DNA adducts, identical to those formed by 13-hydroxy- and 12-hydroxyellipticine, the ellipticine metabolites generated by CYP and peroxidase enzymes, in MCF-7, HL-60, CCRF-CEM, UKF-NB-3, UKF-NB-4 and U87MG cells, but not in neuroblastoma UKF-NB-3 cells. Therefore, DNA adduct formation in most cancer cell lines tested in this comparative study might be the predominant cause of their sensitivity to ellipticine treatment, whereas other mechanisms of ellipticine action also contribute to its cytotoxicity to neuroblastoma UKF-NB-3 cells

    Medical treatment in Wilson’s disease includes chelators (d-penicillamine and trientine) or zinc salts that have to be maintain all the lifelong. This pharmacological treatment is categorised into two phases; the first being a de-coppering phase and the second a maintenance one. The best therapeutic approach remains controversial, as only a few non-controlled trials have compared these treatments. During the initial phase, progressive increase of chelators’ doses adjusted to exchangeable copper and urinary copper might help to avoid neurological deterioration. Liver transplantation is indicated in acute fulminant liver failure and decompensated cirrhosis; in cases of neurologic deterioration, it must be individually discussed. During the maintenance phase, the most important challenge is to obtain a good adherence to lifelong medical therapy. Neurodegenerative diseases that lead to a mislocalisation of iron can be caused by a culmination of localised overload (pro-oxidant siderosis) and localised deficiency (metabolic distress). A new therapeutic concept with conservative iron chelation rescues iron-overloaded neurons by scavenging labile iron and, by delivering this chelated metal to endogenous apo-transferrin, allows iron redistribution to avoid systemic loss of iron
