    Street Vending as an Alternative to Self-employment and a Way to Income Generation in Bangladesh

    This study aimed at visualizing the role of the street vendors as a way to self-employment and income generation in Bangladesh. It was based on the survey of 152 street vendors in different areas of Dhaka. It administered a well structured questionnaire to collect the primary information and to picture the overall street vending scenario in order to show the contribution of the street vendors in self-employment and income generation of Bangladesh. The findings of the study showed that the street vendors are playing a significant role in the economic development of the country through creating the self-employment opportunities, income generation and saving a specific portion from among their income. Since for this street vending, both the vendors and the local community faced several problems the paper finally suggested that, a well management and formalization system of street vending can enrich the overall street vending scenario of the city and can bring a good prospect for the economy.     Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria in Tertiary Hospitals in Chittagong, Bangladesh

    Nosocomial infections (HAI) are major cause for mortality and morbidity worldwide. In low income countries, data suggests 6.5% - 33% of patients have HAI with pneumonia being the most frequent..Antibiotic resistance is highly prevalent in developing countries due to self medication, easy availability and poor regulatory controls. Clinicians have been left with limited antibiotic drug options for the treatment of bacterial infections due to escalated rates of resistance. This comparative study aimed to identify microorganisms from hospital surfaces in two major tertiary care hospitals in Chittagong, Bangladesh. It also identifies antibiotic susceptibility of the samples to antibiotics commonly used in Bangladesh. Samples were collected by swabbing different environmental surface around patients in both hospitals. Identification of bacteria was done by culturing in nutrient media and various common biochemical techniques. Antibiotic sensitivity was determined by disk diffusion method. During the study, 27 samples were collected from different surfaces in different wards of the hospitals. The predominating organisms were Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Serratia. The isolates of organisms showed high level of resistance to commonly used antibiotics especially a fourth generation cephalosporin, cefepime. In addition, antibiotic sensitivity tests showed small colonies or film of growth within zone of inhibition of some of the samples known as “satellite colonies”. The study identified bacterial isolates responsible for HAI in tertiary hospitals and their susceptibility to antibiotics.     Diel transcriptional response of a California Current plankton microbiome to light, low iron, and enduring viral infection

    Phytoplankton and associated microbial communities provide organic carbon to oceanic food webs and drive ecosystem dynamics. However, capturing those dynamics is challenging. Here, an in situ, semi-Lagrangian, robotic sampler profiled pelagic microbes at 4 h intervals over ~2.6 days in North Pacific high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll waters. We report on the community structure and transcriptional dynamics of microbes in an operationally large size class (>5 Όm) predominantly populated by dinoflagellates, ciliates, haptophytes, pelagophytes, diatoms, cyanobacteria (chiefly Synechococcus), prasinophytes (chiefly Ostreococcus), fungi, archaea, and proteobacteria. Apart from fungi and archaea, all groups exhibited 24-h periodicity in some transcripts, but larger portions of the transcriptome oscillated in phototrophs. Periodic photosynthesis-related transcripts exhibited a temporal cascade across the morning hours, conserved across diverse phototrophic lineages. Pronounced silica:nitrate drawdown, a high flavodoxin to ferredoxin transcript ratio, and elevated expression of other Fe-stress markers indicated Fe-limitation. Fe-stress markers peaked during a photoperiodically adaptive time window that could modulate phytoplankton response to seasonal Fe-limitation. Remarkably, we observed viruses that infect the majority of abundant taxa, often with total transcriptional activity synchronized with putative hosts. Taken together, these data reveal a microbial plankton community that is shaped by recycled production and tightly controlled by Fe-limitation and viral activity

    Melissopalynological, physicochemical and antioxidant properties of honey from West Coast of Malaysia

    Stingless bees are native to tropical region and produce honey which are high in moisture content. Compared to honey from honeybees, there are limited studies on honey derived from stingless bees. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition and antioxidant activities of stingless bee honey. Fifteen types of honey were collected from six states in West Coast of Malaysia and pollen analyses were carried out. Four types of unifloral honey samples produced by stingless bees were selected to determine their physicochemical and antioxidant activities including total phenolic, total flavonoid and ascorbic acid contents. Melissopalynological study of 15 honey samples collected from different states showed presence of both unifloral and multifloral origins. Honey samples collected from Apis mellifera (honeybee) combs had lower number of total pollen compared to samples collected from Heterotrigona itama and Geniotrigona thoracica (stingless bees). Jambul Merak honey contains the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents with greatest color intensity and has the highest antioxidant potential. This study highlights the chemical composition and biological activity of honey from stingless bees which may increase its commercial value or to be utilised as potential functional food ingredient

    A multi-modal network approach to model public transport accessibility impacts of bicycle-train integration policies

    In the Netherlands, the bicycle plays an important in station access and, to a lesser extent, in station egress. There is however fairly little knowledge in the potential effects of bicycle-train integration policies. The aim of this paper is to examine the impacts of bicycle-train integration policies on train ridership and job accessibility for public transport users.MethodsWe extended the Dutch National Transport Model (NVM) by implementing a detailed bicycle network linked to the public transport network, access/egress mode combinations and station specific access and egress penalties by mode and station type derived from a stated choice survey. Furthermore, the effects of several bicycletrain integration policy scenarios were examined for a case study for Randstad South, in the Netherlands, comprising a dense train network with 54 train stations.ConclusionsOur analysis shows that improving the quality of bicycle routes and parking can substantially increase train ridership and potential job accessibility for train users. Large and medium stations are more sensitive to improvements in bicycle-train integration policies, while small stations are more sensitive to improvements in the train level of service

    What promotes sustainability in Safe Community programmes?

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The theory and practice of safety promotion has traditionally focused on the safety of individuals. This study also includes systems, environments, and organizations. Safety promotion programmes are designed to support community health initiatives taking a bottom-up approach. This is a long-term and complex process. The aim of this study was to try to empirically identify factors that promote sustainability in the structures of programmes that are managed and coordinated by the local government.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Four focus group sessions with local government politicians and administrators in designated Safe Communities were conducted and analyzed using qualitative content analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Collaboration was found to be the basis for sustainability. Networks, enabling municipalities to exchange ideas, were reported to positively influence the programmes. Personal contacts rather than organizations themselves, determine whether collaboration is sustained. Participants reported an increase in cross-disciplinary collaboration among staff categories. Administrators and politicians were reported to collaborate well, which was perceived to speed up decision-making and thus to facilitate the programme work. Support from the politicians and the county council was seen as a prerequisite. Participants reported an increased willingness to share information between units, which, in their view, supports sustainability. A structure in which all local authorities' offices were located in close proximity to one another was considered to support collaboration. Appointing a public health coordinator responsible for the programme was seen as a way to strengthen the relational resources of the programme.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>With a public health coordinator, the 'external' negotiating power was concentrated in one person. Also, the 'internal' programme strength increased when the coordination was based on a bureaucratic function rather than on one individual. Increased relational resources facilitated the transfer of information. A regular flow of information to policy-makers, residents, and staff was needed in order to integrate safety programmes into routines. Adopting a bottom-up approach requires that informal and ad hoc activities in information management be replaced by formalized, organizationally sanctioned routines. In contrast to injury prevention, which focuses on technical solutions, safety promotion tries to influence attitudes. Collaboration with the media was an area that could be improved.</p
