A FEMINIST READING OF DOUBT AND CALVARY

Religion plays an important role in the lives of Western people, in particular Christianity and the Catholic Church. The arts are constantly trying to represent religion’s relevance and significance through works such as the film Doubt (2008), written by John Patrick Shanley, and the film Calvary (2014), written and directed by John Michael McDonagh. These two stories deal with sexual abuse and power relations within the Catholic Church. For that reason, this work proposes to analyse these two works in order to establish a connection between the patriarchal society and its abuse towards women, and the Church and its abuse towards children, mainly boys, proving that these children are as oppressed as women by the same system. Religion plays an important role in the lives of Western people, in particular Christianity and the Catholic Church. Coming of age in the nineteenth century : an analysis of female space in Mansfield Park and Pride and Prejudice, By Jane Austen; Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë; and North and South, by Elizabeth Gaskell

O presente trabalho propõe uma análise do processo de formação, ou coming of age, feminino em quatro romances do século dezenove que se passam na Inglaterra, com o propósito de verificar como tal processo está intrinsicamente ligado à exploração do próprio espaço pessoal, seja ele físico, social ou metafórico. Formam o corpus dessa pesquisa os romances Pride and Prejudice (1813) e Mansfield Park (1814), de Jane Austen, ambos publicados durante o Período Regencial (1811 – 1820); Jane Eyre (1847), de Charlotte Brontë e North and South (1854), de Elizabeth Gaskell, publicados durante as primeiras décadas do Período Vitoriano (1837 – 1901). Os romances são pareados devido a suas semelhanças: Mansfield Park e Jane Eyre; Pride & Prejudice e North & South. A análise desses dois pares permite que paralelos sejam traçados entre os dois períodos do século XIX em que eles foram produzidos, focando na vida dessas protagonistas femininas criadas na primeira metade do século, especialmente considerando os espaços que elas podem ou não ocupar, e como elas navegam esses espaços; oferecendo, assim, uma janela através da qual pode-se observar a vida no século XIX. O presente estudo começa com Austen, no Período Regencial, e continua através das primeiras décadas do longo Período Vitoriano, examinando os mundos fictícios e personagens criados por essas três escritoras, além de examinar os espaços físicos, sociais e metafóricos em que as personagens mulheres circulam – ou não circulam. Além de analisar a transição das protagonistas para a idade adulta, o presente estudo tem como objetivo olhar para a relação delas com suas casas, e para como o processo de se tornar adulto, de crescer, está intrinsicamente ligado ao processo de encontrar um lar, um lugar ao qual se pertença. Isso é feito com o suporte de pensadores como Mary Poovey, Leonore Davidoff e Catherine Hall, entre outros, cujo entendimento de como a sociedade funcionava na Inglaterra do século XIX são ferramentas valiosas para possibilitar as análises empreendidas nessa tese. Visando contribuir para com os estudos e a fortuna crítica das três autoras, através da análise dos romances selecionados e suas protagonistas, essa pesquisa pretende entender o que significava para mulheres crescer nas primeiras décadas do século XIX: como essas mulheres lidavam com a ideologia das esferas separadas; como elas questionavam o status quo e o ideal do anjo do lar, a fim de atingir seus objetivos, ou como elas aceitavam tais ideais; e finalmente como essas representações femininas criadas por escritoras seguem influenciando movimentos sociais e literários até hoje.The present work analyses the process of female coming of age in four nineteenthcentury novels set in England, so as to verify how this process is intrinsically linked to the exploration of one’s personal space, be it physical, social, or metaphorical. The novels that form the corpus of the research are Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Mansfield Park (1814), both published during the Regency Period (1811 – 1820); and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847) and Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South (1854), published during the Early Victorian Era (1837 – 1901). The novels are paired according to their similarities: Mansfield Park and Jane Eyre; Pride & Prejudice and North & South. The analysis of these pairs allows me to draw parallels between the two periods of the nineteenth century in which they were produced, focusing on the lives of these female protagonists created in the first half of the century, especially when it comes to the spaces they are allowed – or not allowed – to occupy, and how they navigate such spaces, offering a glimpse into the nineteenth century itself. The study starts with Austen, in the Regency Era, and continues through the early decades of the long Victorian Era, examining fictional worlds and characters created by the three authors, and the social, physical and metaphorical spaces in which female characters circulate – or do not circulate. In addition to analysing the protagonists’ transition into adulthood, this study aims to look at their relationship with their homes (or lack thereof), and how the process of growing up is intrinsically linked to that of finding one’s own home, or a place where one belongs. The research is carried out with the scholarly support of scholars such as Mary Poovey, Leonore Davidoff & Catherine Hall, amongst others, whose grasps on the innerworkings of the nineteenth century are valuable as a reading support to the aforementioned novels in order to fulfil the objectives of this work. As well as furthering the studies and critical fortune of the three novelists, through the analysis of the works selected and their protagonists, this study intends to appreciate what it meant for women to come of age in the first half of the nineteenth century: how these women coped with the ideology of separate spheres, how they challenged the status quo and the angel in the house ideal in order to achieve their goals, how they often conformed to it; and how these first portrayals of womanhood by female authors influence literary and social movements to this day

THE REAL JANE AUSTEN: AUSTEN’S SHIFTING IMAGE

ABSTRACTJane Austen is one of the most important and wildly known authors in the English language. Despite her unrelenting fame, very little is known about the actual woman who lived from 1775 to 1816 – her family insisted she led a quiet life and they burned her presumably most compromising letters. Readers and scholars were left with an unfinished sketch by Austen’s sister, Cassandra, later modified to fit the Victorian expectations of what a proper lady ought to be. In 2011, a new portrait has been found, one of a mature and independent authoress. This article aims to look at Austen’s life in order to glimpse at the woman behind the images, understanding how Austen’s image changed alongside her readers.Key words: Jane Austen, portraits, biography, English Literature

“WHY ARE WE TO SHUT UP THE BOOK WEEPING?”: ELIZABETH GASKELL’S RUTH AND THE (IM)POSSIBILITY OF REDEMPTION FOR THE FALLEN WOMAN

Victorian literature is filled with images of women who have sinned, but often these characters are in the background, foreshadowing the heroine’s future if she is not proper and pious. Elizabeth Gaskell’s Ruth, however, puts the fallen woman in its centre and calls her its heroine. This paper aims to look at the contradictions imposed on middle-class women’s existence in the nineteenth century, especially concerning the figures of the Angel in the House and the fallen woman, which are essential for the analysis of Ruth and its tragic ending, in order to understand the (im)possibility of redemption for women in the Victorian period. Scholars such as Mary Poovey (1998) and Eleonore Davidoff (1995), amongst others, willprovide the historical and sociological background necessary to this reading of Elizabeth Gaskell’s 1835 novel Ruth.KEYWORDS: Ruth; Elizabeth Gaskell; Angel in the House; Fallen Woman

Musica pop in Cina: il caso del rapper Xie Di

Il mio elaborato affronta vari argomenti legati alla musica pop in Cina: nel primo capitolo analizzo le principali caratteristiche della scena musicale cinese, tentando di descriverne le principali tendenze, la varietà di generi e le similitudini più comuni con la celebre scena pop coreana. Nel secondo capitolo parlo di industria musicale cinese, analizzandone i principali problemi che tuttora la limitano nel tentativo di raggiungere lo status di scena musicale rilevante nel mondo. Nel capitolo finale analizzo e traduco un brano musicale del rapper cinese Xie Di che ha destato parecchio scalpore in Cina a causa dei suoi contenuti di stampo razzista

Exposição ocupacional e alterações auditivas em músicos da serra gaúcha

Introdução: Os músicos expõem-se sistemática e cumulativamente a níveis de pressão sonora elevados de natureza musical. Tal situação pode desencadear alterações auditivas prejudiciais e permanentes. Objetivo: Avaliar as alterações auditivas em músicos da Serra Gaúcha expostos a níveis de pressão sonora musical elevados comparativamente a indivíduos não expostos. Métodos: Estudo transversal com aplicação de questionário online para a avaliação da exposição ocupacional e das alterações auditivas em músicos da Serra Gaúcha, comparativamente a não músicos, com análise de dosimetria de ruído e realização de audiometrias. Resultados: Incluiu-se 55 respondentes, 25 músicos e 30 não músicos. A idade média foi de 31,26 anos (DP: 7,6). O sexo masculino representou 56% dos respondentes, com 100% de representatividade entre músicos. Realizaram audiometrias 22 músicos e 24 não músicos. Irritabilidade quando exposto a ruído intenso foi o sintoma referido por 42 participantes (76,3%) e uso de fones de ouvido por 46 participantes (83,6%). As dosimetrias de ruído superaram a máxima exposição diária para 13 músicos (59%). Um músico apresentou audiometria sugestiva de perda auditiva induzida por níveis de pressão sonora elevados (PAINPSE). Conclusão: O estudo evidenciou, através da dosimetria do ruído, que os músicos se expõem a intensidades sonoras acima dos níveis recomendados e isto representa um risco para a saúde com potencial dano para a audição. Contudo a análise transversal não identificou número significativo de músicos com alteração sugestiva PAINPSE. No entanto, ações educativas e preventivas são necessárias para garantir a promoção de saúde através de programas de proteção auditiva direcionados para músicos.Introduction: Musicians are systematically and cumulatively exposed to high levels of musical type sound pressure. Such situation can trigger harmful and permanent hearing changes. Objective: Evaluate hearing disturbances in musicians from Serra Gaúcha exposed to high levels of musical sound pressure compared to non-exposed individuals. Methods: Cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire to assess occupational exposure and hearing disorders in musicians from Serra Gaúcha, compared to non-musicians, using noise dosimetry analysis and audiometry. Results: Fifty-five respondents were included, 25 musicians and 30 non-musicians. The mean age was 31.26 years (SD: 7.6). Males represented 56% of the respondents. Twenty-two musicians and 24 non-musicians performed audiometry. Irritability when exposed to loud noise was the main symptom reported by 42 participants (76.3%) and use of headphones was reported by 46 participants (83.6%). The noise dosimetry exceeded the maximum daily exposure for 13 musicians (59%). Only one musician had an audiometry suggestive of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). Conclusion: The study showed, through noise dosimetry, that musicians are exposed to sound pressures above the recommended levels and this represents a risk to their health with potential damage to their hearing. However, the cross-sectional analysis did not identify a significant number of musicians with suggestive NIHL. However, educational and preventive actions are necessary to ensure health promotion through hearing protection programs aimed at musicians

Articulação e coordenação do Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar

Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso (graduação)—Universidade de Brasília, Faculdade de Economia, Administração, Contabilidade e Gestão de Políticas Públicas, Departamento de Gestão de Políticas Públicas, 2018.A preocupação com a fome no mundo passou a ser destaque no início do século XX, o termo Segurança Alimentar surge pela primeira vez após o fim da 1ª Guerra Mundial o qual tratava-se de uma questão de segurança nacional por parte das nações, já no final da 2ª Guerra percebeu-se que a fome e a pobreza deveriam ser enfrentadas através de cooperações internacionais, e assim surgiram inúmeros programas com o intuito de sanar esse problema. Atualmente as questões relacionadas com a alimentação ainda existem, e estão ligadas a fatores políticos, econômicos e sociais, pois além da fome enfrentamos problemas de desnutrição, falta de nutrientes, sobrepeso, obesidade e distúrbios alimentares. Assim, tornou-se necessária a criação de políticas públicas de assistência social, com projetos voltados para saúde e educação, através do acesso a uma alimentação adequada e de qualidade. O presente estudo desenvolveu uma análise apresentando de que maneira a articulação e a coordenação que envolvem o Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar (PNAE) dentro da Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional (SAN) estão relacionados. O trabalho se propôs a identificar os atores sociais envolvidos, suas participações e contribuições realizadas dentro dos Programas, além de verificar o modelo de gestão dentro do PNAE para identificar como ocorrem os mecanismos de articulação e coordenação
