    Rocking of a rigid block freestanding on a flat pedestal

    The seismic protection of objects contained within Museums is a topic of great interest, especially with reference to how they are displayed or stored. This problem is the same as that of a large class of non-structural components, such as mechanical and electrical hospital and laboratory equipment that could lose their functionality because of earthquakes. Statues and ceramics simply supported on the floor represent a significant set of case. In some cases, like the Bronzes of Riace, isolation systems have been developed. However, in general museum exhibits are not equipped with devices capable of mitigating the oscillations induced by possible earthquakes. The case study of a marble statue placed on a freestanding squat rigid pedestal is examined. The system of algebraic differential equations governing the problem has been derived and included in an ad-hoc numerical procedure. It is shown that the insertion of a squat rigid body with low frictional resistance at the lower interface with the floor, and high frictional resistance at the upper interface with the artifact significantly reduces the amplitude of the rocking response. As a result the artifact rocks without sliding on the rigid base that slides without rocking with respect to the floor. The numerical analysis performed can be a tool to help in the choice of the optimal friction values in the surfaces of the flat block, designed as a simple isolation system

    Use of nano zero-valent iron to reduce inorganic species electrogenerated during anodic oxidation on boron doped diamond anodes

    In this paper, the solution coming from an anodic oxidation on boron doped diamond of chloride-containing solution is treated with addition of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) to reduce the amount of chlorinated byproducts into chloride ions. The electrolyzed solutions have been obtained under galvanostatic conditions in an undivided reactor. The evolution and depletion of all the chlorinated species have been monitored by spectrophotometry and ion chromatography. The nanoscale iron particles have been synthesized in our laboratory by a fast and facile method through reaction of FeSO4 and NaBH4 solutions without addition of dispersants. The effect on the conversion yield of several operative parameters has been investigated and discussed. The preliminary results indicate that a nZVI postreatment can be considered a viable technology for the treatment of solutions containing active chlorine and chlorate. However, the reduction of perchlorate, either in mixed solutions or alone, requires too drastic conditions to be completed

    Masonry buildings are the main part of the Architectural heritage in the World. The need of preservation for the historical memory, together with the exigence of fruition and use, has evidenced the need of appropriate analysis tools. In general, the stresses in masonry structures are usually considerably lower than those required for their material failure, so that the stability is mainly due to their shape and self weight. These aspects allowed in the past the simple realization of construction models in a reduced scale in order to assess the stability. As the history has pointed out, the behaviour of constructions is strongly linked to the workmanship and the good realization of the construction details. Local or global collapse can occur in fact due to pathologies arising during the construction or to bad realization of construction details. This paper deals with this last aspect, examining three different masonry buildings: the first one is a brick masonry building in Bologna: San Barbaziano Church, the others are two Roman domus in two different archaelogical sites in Campania: Villa Regina (Boscoreale, Napoli) and Villa dei Misteri (Pompeii, Napoli). The defects have been divided into two classes: structural defects and non structural ones. It is shown that structural defects can cause a global damage and could involve significant interventions

    Cl-IB-MECA Inhibits Human Thyroid Cancer Cell Proliferation Independently of A3 Adenosine Receptor Activation

    A3 adenosine receptor (A3AR) agonists have been reported to modulate cellular proliferation. This work was aimed to investigate the expression and the possible implication of A3AR in the human thyroid carcinomas. Normal thyroid tissue samples did not express A3 adenosine receptor, while primary thyroid cancer tissues expressed high level of A3AR, as determined by immunohistochemistry analysis. In human papillary thyroid carcinoma cell line, NPA, at concentrations > or =10 microM, the A3AR-selective agonist 2-chloro-N(6)-(3-iodobenzyl)adenosine-5'-N-methylcarboxamide (Cl-IB-MECA) produced inhibition of cell growth, by blocking the G(1) cell cycle phase in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. This effect was well correlated with a reduction of protein expression of cyclins D1 and E2 after 24 hours of Cl-IB-MECA treatment. Moreover Cl-IB-MECA induced dephosphorylation of ERK1/2 in a time- and concentration-dependent manner, which in turn inhibits cell proliferation. The effect of Cl-IB-MECA was not prevented by A3AR antagonists, MRS1191 or MRS1523 or FA385. Furthermore, neither nucleoside transporter inhibitors, Dypiridamole and NBTI, nor the A1, A2A and A2B receptors antagonists were able to block the response to Cl-IB-MECA. Although Cl-IB-MECA has been shown to influence cell death and survival in other systems through an A3AR-mediated mechanism, in NPA cells the growth inhibition induced by micromolar concentrations of Cl-IB-MECA is not related to A3AR activation and hence that its effects on human papillary carcinoma cell line seem to be independent of the presence of this receptor subtype

    Mindful approach to University education

    A mindful approach to education and training could improve students' reflective capacities and have positive effects on clinical practice because it facilitates a helping relationship. The main aims of this study were to investigate whether participation in a mindful-based University training was associated with increases in mindfulness skills as measured by the 5-Facet M Questionnaire, and to present the Italian validation of the questionnaire. Sixty-seven students from the course Neuro and Psychomotor Therapy were enrolled. They filled in the self-administered 5-Facet M Questionnaire before and 1 month after a mindfulness-based training, focused on role-playing and followed by a feedback group discussion. The Italian version of the 5-Facet M Questionnaire had good psychometric properties. The pre- and post-training analysis showed a significant increase in the subscale 'Observing'. Findings suggest that role-playing and feedback group sessions are valid tools to improve students' mindfulness skills

    Conversion of the BASE Prion Strain into the BSE Strain: The Origin of BSE?

    Atypical neuropathological and molecular phenotypes of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) have recently been identified in different countries. One of these phenotypes, named bovine “amyloidotic” spongiform encephalopathy (BASE), differs from classical BSE for the occurrence of a distinct type of the disease-associated prion protein (PrP), termed PrP(Sc), and the presence of PrP amyloid plaques. Here, we show that the agents responsible for BSE and BASE possess different biological properties upon transmission to transgenic mice expressing bovine PrP and inbred lines of nontransgenic mice. Strikingly, serial passages of the BASE strain to nontransgenic mice induced a neuropathological and molecular disease phenotype indistinguishable from that of BSE-infected mice. The existence of more than one agent associated with prion disease in cattle and the ability of the BASE strain to convert into the BSE strain may have important implications with respect to the origin of BSE and spongiform encephalopathies in other species, including humans

    Psychological treatments and psychotherapies in the neurorehabilitation of pain. Evidences and recommendations from the italian consensus conference on pain in neurorehabilitation

    BACKGROUND: It is increasingly recognized that treating pain is crucial for effective care within neurological rehabilitation in the setting of the neurological rehabilitation. The Italian Consensus Conference on Pain in Neurorehabilitation was constituted with the purpose identifying best practices for us in this context. Along with drug therapies and physical interventions, psychological treatments have been proven to be some of the most valuable tools that can be used within a multidisciplinary approach for fostering a reduction in pain intensity. However, there is a need to elucidate what forms of psychotherapy could be effectively matched with the specific pathologies that are typically addressed by neurorehabilitation teams. OBJECTIVES: To extensively assess the available evidence which supports the use of psychological therapies for pain reduction in neurological diseases. METHODS: A systematic review of the studies evaluating the effect of psychotherapies on pain intensity in neurological disorders was performed through an electronic search using PUBMED, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Based on the level of evidence of the included studies, recommendations were outlined separately for the different conditions. RESULTS: The literature search yielded 2352 results and the final database included 400 articles. The overall strength of the recommendations was medium/low. The different forms of psychological interventions, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, cognitive or behavioral techniques, Mindfulness, hypnosis, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Brief Interpersonal Therapy, virtual reality interventions, various forms of biofeedback and mirror therapy were found to be effective for pain reduction in pathologies such as musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Central Post-Stroke pain, Phantom Limb Pain, pain secondary to Spinal Cord Injury, multiple sclerosis and other debilitating syndromes, diabetic neuropathy, Medically Unexplained Symptoms, migraine and headache. CONCLUSIONS: Psychological interventions and psychotherapies are safe and effective treatments that can be used within an integrated approach for patients undergoing neurological rehabilitation for pain. The different interventions can be specifically selected depending on the disease being treated.     PATZ1 acts as a tumor suppressor in thyroid cancer via targeting p53-dependent genes involved in EMT and cell migration

    PATZ1, a POZ-Zinc finger protein, is emerging as an important regulator of development and cancer, but its cancer-related function as oncogene or tumor-suppressor is still debated. Here, we investigated its possible role in thyroid carcinogenesis. We demonstrated PATZ1 is down-regulated in thyroid carcinomas compared to normal thyroid tissues, with an inverse correlation to the degree of cell differentiation. In fact, PATZ1 expression was significantly further down-regulated in poorly differentiated and anaplastic thyroid cancers compared to the papillary histotype, and it resulted increasingly delocalized from the nucleus to the cytoplasm proceeding from differentiated to undifferentiated thyroid carcinomas. Restoration of PATZ1 expression in three thyroid cancer-derived cell lines, all characterized by fully dedifferentiated cells, significantly inhibited their malignant behaviors, including in vitro proliferation, anchorage-independent growth, migration and invasion, as well as in vivo tumor growth. Consistent with recent studies showing a role for PATZ1 in the p53 pathway, we showed that ectopic expression of PATZ1 in thyroid cancer cells activates p53-dependent pathways opposing epithelial-mesenchymal transition and cell migration to prevent invasiveness. These results provide insights into a potential tumor-suppressor role of PATZ1 in thyroid cancer progression, and thus may have potential clinical relevance for the prognosis and therapy of thyroid cancer
