Da immer mehr wissenschaftliche Publikationen als Open Access veröffentlicht werden, müssen die Verlage handeln und sich mit den neuen Bedingungen auseinandersetzen. Es haben sich bereits viele unterschiedliche Geschäftsmodelle im Bereich der Open Access Publikationen entwickelt und etabliert. Die folgende Arbeit wird einen Überblick über die momentan gebräuchlichen Geschäftsmodelle wieder geben, aktuelle Entwicklungen schildern und sich mit den Open Access-Geschäftsmodellen einzelner Verlage genauer beschäftigen.Open Access has already become an interesting target for publishers like Springer or Wiley. Due to the fact that there are more and more Open Access articles published the publishers will have to act and deal with the new conditions.     Tool Wear Segmentation in Blanking Processes with Fully Convolutional Networks based Digital Image Processing

    The extend of tool wear significantly affects blanking processes and has a decisive impact on product quality and productivity. For this reason, numerous scientists have addressed their research to wear monitoring systems in order to identify or even predict critical wear at an early stage. Existing approaches are mainly based on indirect monitoring using time series, which are used to detect critical wear states via thresholds or machine learning models. Nevertheless, differentiation between types of wear phenomena affecting the tool during blanking as well as quantification of worn surfaces is still limited in practice. While time series data provides partial insights into wear occurrence and evolution, direct monitoring techniques utilizing image data offer a more comprehensive perspective and increased robustness when dealing with varying process parameters. However, acquiring and processing this data in real-time is challenging. In particular, high dynamics combined with increasing strokes rates as well as the high dimensionality of image data have so far prevented the development of direct image-based monitoring systems. For this reason, this paper demonstrates how high-resolution images of tools at 600 spm can be captured and subsequently processed using semantic segmentation deep learning algorithms, more precisely Fully Convolutional Networks (FCN). 125,000 images of the tool are taken from successive strokes, and microscope images are captured to investigate the worn surfaces. Based on findings from the microscope images, selected images are labeled pixel by pixel according to their wear condition and used to train a FCN (U-Net)

    Dog Ownership Enhances Symptomatic Responses to Air Pollution in Children with Asthma

    BACKGROUND: Experimental data suggest that asthma exacerbation by ambient air pollutants is enhanced by exposure to endotoxin and allergens; however, there is little supporting epidemiologic evidence. METHODS: We evaluated whether the association of exposure to air pollution with annual prevalence of chronic cough, phlegm production, or bronchitis was modified by dog and cat ownership (indicators of allergen and endotoxin exposure). The study population consisted of 475 Southern California children with asthma from a longitudinal cohort of participants in the Children’s Health Study. We estimated average annual ambient exposure to nitrogen dioxide, ozone, particulate matter < 10, 2.5, and 10–2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM(10), PM(2.5), and PM(10–2.5), respectively), elemental and organic carbon, and acid vapor from monitoring stations in each of the 12 study communities. Multivariate models were used to examine the effect of yearly variation of each pollutant. Effects were scaled to the variability that is common for each pollutant in representative communities in Southern California. RESULTS: Among children owning a dog, there were strong associations between bronchitic symptoms and all pollutants examined. Odds ratios ranged from 1.30 per 4.2 μg/m(3) for PM(10–2.5) [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.91–1.87) to 1.91 per 1.2 μg/m(3) for organic carbon (95% CI, 1.34–2.71). Effects were somewhat larger among children who owned both a cat and dog. There were no effects or small effects with wide CIs among children without a dog and among children who owned only a cat. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that dog ownership, a source of residential exposure to endotoxin, may worsen the relationship between air pollution and respiratory symptoms in asthmatic children

    Immunochip analysis identifies multiple susceptibility loci for systemic sclerosis

    In this study, 1,833 systemic sclerosis (SSc) cases and 3,466 controls were genotyped with the Immunochip array. Classical alleles, amino acid residues, and SNPs across the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region were imputed and tested. These analyses resulted in a model composed of six polymorphic amino acid positions and seven SNPs that explained the observed significant associations in the region. In addition, a replication step comprising 4,017 SSc cases and 5,935 controls was carried out for several selected non-HLA variants, reaching a total of 5,850 cases and 9,401 controls of European ancestry. Following this strategy, we identified and validated three SSc risk loci, including DNASE1L3 at 3p14, the SCHIP1-IL12A locus at 3q25, and ATG5 at 6q21, as well as a suggested association of the TREH-DDX6 locus at 11q23. The associations of several previously reported SSc risk loci were validated and further refined, and the observed peak of association in PXK was related to DNASE1L3. Our study has increased the number of known genetic associations with SSc, provided further insight into the pleiotropic effects of shared autoimmune risk factors, and highlighted the power of dense mapping for detecting previously overlooked susceptibility loci

    Acute mental stress drives vascular inflammation and promotes plaque destabilization in mouse atherosclerosis

Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology.Aims: Mental stress substantially contributes to the initiation and progression of human disease, including cardiovascular conditions. We aim to investigate the underlying mechanisms of these contributions since they remain largely unclear. Methods and results: Here, we show in humans and mice that leucocytes deplete rapidly from the blood after a single episode of acute mental stress. Using cell-tracking experiments in animal models of acute mental stress, we found that stress exposure leads to prompt uptake of inflammatory leucocytes from the blood to distinct tissues including heart, lung, skin, and, if present, atherosclerotic plaques. Mechanistically, we found that acute stress enhances leucocyte influx into mouse atherosclerotic plaques by modulating endothelial cells. Specifically, acute stress increases adhesion molecule expression and chemokine release through locally derived norepinephrine. Either chemical or surgical disruption of norepinephrine signalling diminished stress-induced leucocyte migration into mouse atherosclerotic plaques. Conclusion: Our data show that acute mental stress rapidly amplifies inflammatory leucocyte expansion inside mouse atherosclerotic lesions and promotes plaque vulnerability.publishersversionPeer reviewe

The objective of this study was to analyze genetic susceptibility loci in SSc at the gene level and to determine if the detected associations were shared in African-American and White populations, using data from ImmunoChip and GWAS genotyping studies. The White sample included 1833 cases and 3466 controls (956 cases and 2741 controls from the US and 877 cases and 725 controls from Spain) and the African American sample, 291 cases and 260 controls. In both Whites and African Americans, we performed a gene-level analysis that integrates association statistics in a gene possibly harboring multiple SNPs with weak effect on disease risk, using Versatile Gene-based Association Study (VEGAS) software. The SNP-level analysis was performed using PLINK v.1.07. We identified 4 novel candidate genes (STAT1, FCGR2C, NIPSNAP3B, and SCT) significantly associated and 4 genes (SERBP1, PINX1, TMEM175 and EXOC2) suggestively associated with SSc in the gene level analysis in White patients. As an exploratory analysis we compared the results on Whites with those from African Americans. Of previously established susceptibility genes identified in Whites, only TNFAIP3 was significant at the nominal level (p = 6.13x10-3) in African Americans in the gene-level analysis of the ImmunoChip data. Among the top suggestive novel genes identified in Whites based on the ImmunoChip data, FCGR2C and PINX1 were only nominally significant in African Americans (p = 0.016 and p = 0.028, respectively), while among the top novel genes identified in the gene-level analysis in African Americans, UNC5C (p = 5.57x10-4) and CLEC16A (p = 0.0463) were also nominally significant in Whites. We also present the gene-level analysis of SSc clinical and autoantibody phenotypes among Whites.     Ultrasound in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome.

    Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition; patients' symptoms can be rapidly relieved by a simple surgical procedure. The diagnosis is often obvious in the presence of a typical history and physical signs. In doubtful cases the surgeon utilises electromyography to confirm the diagnosis. This test, however, is time- consuming and may be unpleasant for the patient. A new test is described using therapeutic ultrasound which is applied to the patient's wrist for a few seconds. A positive response occurs when the patient experiences paraesthesiae or discomfort in the hand in the median nerve distribution. Following a pilot study on 19 patients the test has been further evaluated on a series of 82 patients by comparison with EMG studies. The performance of the ultrasound therapy unit used in the experiments was first fully investigated by measurement of output power and frequency. Animal experiments were conducted to determine the effect of ultrasound on peripheral nerve using the rat sciatic nerve as an animal model. A needle thermistor and hydrophone were used to measure skin temperature and ultrasound intensity during insonation (i.e. exposure of tissue to ultrasound) via a water bag which was used to ensure efficient acoustic coupling. Specimens of sciatic nerve from the insonated rats were examined under the electron microscope. In addition teased specimens of sciatic nerve were prepared and axon counts performed on thin sections. The laboratory work revealed no damage in nerves exposed to normal levels of ultrasound but in the maximal exposure group some focal remyelination was seen The final results of the clinical assessment of the ultrasound test showed a 74% correlation with EMG studies although the latter must remain the investigation of choice. The ultrasound test would seem to have a place as a reasonably accurate, non-invasive screening procedure which can be performed in the clinic with a minimum amount of apparatus
