    What do you prefer for a relaxing time at home: reading, watching TV or listening to the radio?

    This article studies the determinants of time spent by Spanish consumers on reading, watching TV and listening to the radio. To that end, we estimate a SUR (seemingly unrelated regressions) model with data from the Spanish Time Use Survey for 2009–2010. Our results show that being self-employed has a negative and significant effect on the time dedicated to reading and to watching TV; older individuals spend more time reading, and being male influences the time spent watching TV and listening to the radio, all in a statistically significant and positive way. Additionally, those with a higher level of education spend more time reading, while those with lower levels of education prefer to watch TV. Adults with better health spend less time on both reading and watching TV, and families with larger numbers of children up to age 5 tend to spend less time on all three of our at-home leisure activities. Finally, living in a larger city has a positive effect on the time dedicated to all three options

    Like my parents at home? Gender differences in children’s housework in Germany and Spain

    This paper analyzes the relationship between parents’ time devoted to housework and the time devoted to housework by their children. Using data for Germany and Spain from the Multinational Time Use Study, we find positive correlations between parents’ and children’s housework time, indicating that the more time parents devote to housework, the more time their children devote to housework. However, we find cross-country differences in these relationships. In Germany, both fathers’ and mothers’ housework is positively related to the time devoted to housework by their children, while in Spain this relationship only holds for fathers’ time. We also find that these results are not applicable to all subgroups of the population, as our analysis considering the labor force status and education of the parents yields mixed results

    El abandono de los estudiantes es un problema que afecta a todas las universidades siendo más acusado en las titulaciones de las ramas de Ingeniería y Arquitectura. Como docentes del Grado de Ingeniería Informática de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha nuestro interés se centra en analizar el perfil del estudiante que abandona estos estudios, con el fin de definir acciones orientadas a reducir la actual tasa de abandono. En ediciones anteriores de las JENUI se ha analizado esta problemática desde el punto de vista de la estadística tradicional y de la minería de datos, mediante árboles de decisión y regresión multivariante; en este trabajo lo abordamos mediante algoritmos de aprendizaje de redes bayesianas, ya que éstas tienen una semántica muy rica y son fácilmente interpretables. Los resultados del trabajo no son concluyentes debido a las restricciones de la base de datos utilizada, pero la descripción del estudio realizado pone en valor el interés de la técnica empleada y sienta las bases para mejorar el alcance de la investigación en trabajos futuros relacionados con la extración de datos de futuros estudiantes

    Enclavijado de Ender en las fracturas del macizo trocantéreo: análisis retrospectivo de la ocupación del canal medular

    Se revisaron las historias clínicas de 226 pacientes afectos de fracturas del macizo trocantérico, tratadas mediante enclavijado de Ender en un periodo de 9 años en el Hospital del Insalud de Barbastro. La estabilidad de las fracturas se determinó mediante la clasificación de Ramadier. Se valoró el porcentaje de ocupación de la cavidad medular femoral por los clavos de Ender y la posible relación de este parámetro con la migración del material de osteosíntesis. Se evaluó también la utilidad del bloqueo distal de los clavos de Ender con agujas de Kirschner, en la prevención de su migración distal. Se comprobó una relación significativa entre el porcentaje de ocupación del canal medular y la migración distal del material en las fracturas inestables. El bloqueo distal con aguja de Kirschner no se acompañó de una menor incidencia en la migración distal de los clavos.A retrospective study was done on 226 trochanteric fractures managed with Ender nails during a 9 years period at the Insalud Hospital of Barbastro. Stability of these fractures was classified following Ramadier's criteria. Filling of the medular cavity by Ender nails and its relation with osteosyntehsis migration was analysed. Distal locking of Ender nails by Kirschner pins was evaluated to prevent its distal mobilization. A significative relationship was observed between a high filling rate of the medular cavity and lower distal migration rate in unestable trochanteric fractures.     Non-Structural Masonry Walls Strengthened With Gfrp Laminates

    One of the major construction systems in Colombia, and in general throughout Latin America, consists of multistory moment resisting reinforced concrete (RC) frames filled with unreinforced masonry (URM) walls. These non-structural masonry walls are conventionally built using clay tiles. Due to the high seismic activity in Colombia, this kind of masonry wall is prone to damage. One of the alternatives being explored in Colombia to prevent the failure or lessen the damages in clay tile URM walls is to strengthen them with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) laminates. This paper presents promising results of experimental tests conducted on twenty-six wallettes of 9x70x70 cm and 9x120x120 cm, which were strengthened with different layouts of GFRP laminates. In addition, a full-scale wall was tested to validate the technology. The paper discusses the effect of GFRP laminates on the failure mechanisms, capacity and ductility parameters as well as on the overall reduction of earthquake damage for clay tile URM walls

    Mid-infrared Suspended Waveguide Platform and Building Blocks

    In this work we present our recent progress in the development of a platform for the mid-infrared wavelength range, based on suspended silicon waveguide with subwavelength metamaterial cladding. The platform has some intrinsic advantages, which make it a very promising candidate for sensing applications in the fingerprint region. Specifically, it can cover the full transparency window of silicon (up to a wavelength of 8 μm), only requires one lithographic etch-step and can be designed for strong light-matter interaction. Design rules, practical aspects of the fabrication process and experimental results of a complete set of elemental building blocks operating at two very different wavelengths, 3.8 μm and 7.67 μm, will be discussed. Propagation losses as low as 0.82 dB/cm at λo=3.8 μm and 3.1 dB/cm at λo=7.67 μm are attained, for the interconnecting waveguides.Universidad de Málaga.     Properties of Portland Cement Mortar with Substitutions of Natural and Expanded Perlite

    The present research deals with the feasibility of using high-temperature pozzolans such as Natural Perlite (NP) and Expanded Perlite (EP), different dosagues of additions were made to mortars in order to perform their mechanical properties. Mortars were subjected to destructive tests in hardened state: compression, tension, flexion and adhesion strength; as well as non-destructive tests in hardened state: ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), electrical resistivity (ER), density (ρ) and total porosity (PT); in addition to attack by sodium sulfate at 90 days. The percentages of the substitutions were 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30% by weight of Portland cement mass (PC) relative to a control mortar (cement-sand-water). With the partial replacement of the cement and according to the tests carried out, it can be observed that the problem of durability and CO2 emissions is significantly reduced and, consequently, an energy saving and a lower environmental impact are promoted

    Validez del dispositivo inercial WIMU PRO para el registro de la frecuencia cardiaca en un test de campo

    Introduction. Technological advances have contributed to improve physiological and kinematical data collection in training sessions and competition matches. Inertial devices as WIMU PROTM (RealTrack Systems, Almeria, Spain) composed by different sensors (four accelerometers, two gyroscopes, a magnetometer, a GNSS chip to global tracking through satellite triangulation, a UWB chip to indoor sports tracking, Ant+ and Bluetooth receivers, among others) is used in different sports situations. It is important to know the validity and precision of measurement data because it is used in real game contexts. Objective. Evaluate inertial unit WIMU PROTM validity to collect heart rate (HR) data in relation to validated device Polar Team 2®. Participants. 15 under-16 football players participated voluntarily in this research (age: 15,40 ± 0,50 years, height: 169,26 ± 0,08 cm, weight: 62,00 ± 12,32 kg). Procedure. Football players performed RSA test (adapted from Bangsbo 2008) composed of 7 sprints of 30 meters with 20 seconds active recovery between sprints, which simulated the real demands of football matches. Results. It was found and very strong correlation between WIMU PROTM and Polar Team 2® data (r2=.958, p<.001). Conclusions. WIMU PROTMinertial device is valid to register heart rate data in football.Los avances tecnológicos han contribuido a la mejora de la colección de datos fisiológicos y cinemáticos con relación a la competición y los entrenamientos. Dispositivos inerciales tales como WIMUPROTM (RealTrack Systems, Almería, España) compuesto por diferentes sensores (cuatro acelerómetros, dos giróscopos, un magnetómetro, un chip GNSS para posicionamiento global mediante satélite, un chip UWB para posicionamiento por radiofrecuencia de onda corta en deportes indoor, receptor de Ant+ y Bluetooth, entre otros)se utilizan dentro de una variedad de situaciones deportivas.  Es importante conocer la validez y precisión del dato de dichas mediciones ya que se utilizan en contextos reales del juego. Objetivo. Evaluar la validez del dispositivo inercial WIMU PROTM para registrar la variable frecuencia cardiaca (FC) en relación con un dispositivo validado como es Polar Team 2®.Participantes. 15 jugadores de fútbol de categoría cadete participaron voluntariamente en este estudio(edad:15,40 ± 0,50 años, altura:169,26 ± 0,08 cm, peso:62,00 ± 12,32 kg). Procedimiento. Los individuos que componen la muestra llevaron a cabo el test RSA (adaptado de Bangsbo 2008) el cual consta de 7 sprints de 30 metros con una recuperación activa entre ellos de 20 segundos, el cual simula las exigencias reales de competición en fútbol. Resultados.Se encontró una correlación muy alta entre los datos obtenidos por el registro del dispositivo WIMU PROTM y los realizados por el dispositivo Polar Team 2® (r2=.958, p<.001). Conclusiones. El dispositivo inercial WIMU PROTMes válido para registrar la variable de intensidad de actividad física frecuencia cardiaca en fútbol

    Differential Role of Human Choline Kinase α and β Enzymes in Lipid Metabolism: Implications in Cancer Onset and Treatment

    11 pages, 6 figures, 1 table.Background The Kennedy pathway generates phosphocoline and phosphoethanolamine through its two branches. Choline Kinase (ChoK) is the first enzyme of the Kennedy branch of synthesis of 1phosphocholine, the major component of the plasma membrane. ChoK family of proteins is composed by ChoKα and ChoKβ isoforms, the first one with two different variants of splicing. Recently ChoKα has been implicated in the carcinogenic process, since it is over-expressed in a variety of human cancers. However, no evidence for a role of ChoKβ in carcinogenesis has been reported. Methodology/Principal Findings Here we compare the in vitro and in vivo properties of ChoKα1 and ChoKβ in lipid metabolism, and their potential role in carcinogenesis. Both ChoKα1 and ChoKβ showed choline and ethanolamine kinase activities when assayed in cell extracts, though with different affinity for their substrates. However, they behave differentially when overexpressed in whole cells. Whereas ChoKβ display an ethanolamine kinase role, ChoKα1 present a dual choline/ethanolamine kinase role, suggesting the involvement of each ChoK isoform in distinct biochemical pathways under in vivo conditions. In addition, while overexpression of ChoKα1 is oncogenic when overexpressed in HEK293T or MDCK cells, ChoKβ overexpression is not sufficient to induce in vitro cell transformation nor in vivo tumor growth. Furthermore, a significant upregulation of ChoKα1 mRNA levels in a panel of breast and lung cancer cell lines was found, but no changes in ChoKβ mRNA levels were observed. Finally, MN58b, a previously described potent inhibitor of ChoK with in vivo antitumoral activity, shows more than 20-fold higher efficiency towards ChoKα1 than ChoKβ. Conclusion/Significance This study represents the first evidence of the distinct metabolic role of ChoKα and ChoKβ isoforms, suggesting different physiological roles and implications in human carcinogenesis.
