Introduction: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of mortality in Malaysia. Psychological risk factors are associated with detrimental outcomes in CAD. Our study aimed to evaluate procedural anxiety and depression levels among subjects who underwent coronary angioplasty. Methods: A single-centre prospective cohort study was conducted on patients electively admitted to a tertiary hospital in Malaysia for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) over a half-year period. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ5D) Health Questionnaire were used to evaluate subjects’ psychological statuses. The EQ Visual Analogue Scale was used for the global assessment of their health. Results: The analysis included 65 patients with a mean age of 63 years from a predominately educated population (n=54; 83.1%). Before the PCI procedure, female sex was found to be protective against depression, with an odds ratio (ORs) of 0.29 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.08–1.03). A high level of education was protective against anxiety (OR=0.21; 95% CI 0.06–0.83). After the PCI, females were more likely to be depressed (OR=3.89; 95% CI 1.13–13.37), and those of Malay ethnicity were more likely to be anxious (OR=4.2; 95% CI 1.03–17.07). Using the HADS, subjects were significantly less anxious and depressed (pre-PCI: median (IQR) score=4 (7.0)); post-PCI: median (IQR) score=3 (5.0), p=0.02), measured by the HADS. Using the EQ5D, subjects had an improved mean VAS score (post-PCI: 75±14.9; pre-PCI: 68±12.6; p<0.05). Conclusions: PCI may predispose patients with CAD to psychological stressors. Female patients and those of Malay ethnicity are more likely to experience psychological stress. Being highly educated is protective against such stress

An Analysis Of The Beneficial Of Energy Saving Device

    Get PDF
This paper discusses about the energy saving device product which claim that it can reduce the electrical consumption in domestic building when connected to any point of power line bus or improve the energy conversion of electrical appliances. In 2014, electricity saver product had claimed losses amounting to USD 1 million in Malaysia alone. Power factor correction is proven to reduce electricity consumption in commercial and industrial building but do it applies to the domestic building as well? To prove or disprove this case, an energy saving device is constructed and tested in real situation. Multiple appliances are connected with and without the energy saving device. The result shows an insignificant amount of losses being reduced by the device and in some cases further increase the power consumption due to LED’s indicator that continuously switched ON once it is connected. The result of this study provides the awareness to the consumer to be more critical and stop supporting a non-beneficial product that is theoretically and practically faulty

The effects of effective microorganisms (EM) on the nutritive values of fungal-treated rice straw

    Get PDF
A study to improve the nutritive values of rice straw by means of biological treatment was conducted. The rice straw was subjected to three treatments: plain rice straw (T1), rice straw treated with Aspergillus niger for 10 d (T2) and fungal-treated rice straw inoculated with EM (T3). All samples were subjected to proximate analysis to determine the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) , crude protein (CP), acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent lignin (ADL), cellulose and hemicellulose content of rice straw after eight days of fermentation. The effect of fermentation days of T3 on the nutritive values and dry matter degradability (DMD) of the three treatment groups were also carried out on nine fistulated goats using nylon bag technique and data were recorded at six different fermentation times. No significant (p>0.05) difference was observed on the chemical composition of rice straw treated with A. niger except the CP content increased significantly (p<0.01) when compared with untreated rice straw (T1). However, when the fungal-treated rice straw was inoculated with EM, significant (p<0.01) difference was observed in CP, OM, NDF, ADF and cellulose content of the rice straw compared with T1. It was suggested that the optimum duration of fermentation by the EM on the fungal-treated rice straw was 6d of fermentation as hemicellulose content was recorded higher than other days of fermentation, while NDF, ADF, ADL, and cellulose content were relatively lower than previous days. DMD of rice straw was improved when fungal-treated rice straw was inoculated with EM
